Five Pentax lenses that didn't get their own video (until now). Number 3 & 4 I would buy again!

  • Not every piece of gear gets their own video. Fortunately, five forgotten Pentax lenses now do. Well, they have to share a video but we can't have everything we want.
    Each of these lenses has a different story. Some I owned for a few months and dozens of pictures, others for years and hundreds of pictures. Each offers something unique and wonderful. What lenses have you used and passed on during your time as a photographer? Would you buy them back?

      Watching your video I remember that I have an old Sigma 35-70 push-pull zoom! Seems similar to the one you mentioned in the video. Shot it some on a K5 (that I often regret selling) need to try it out on film with my P3n

      The 18-135 is my "if I could have only one" lens. It is amazing. Fast, quiet focus. Great IQ wide open at every single focal length, IQ which holds up to insane crop amounts, which lets this make do as a wildlife lens too. Weather sealed. Good looking. Fun. To be honest, I kind of resent how good it is because when I leave the house how could I grab anything else? Unless I have some very specific photography planned, this lens is my go to.

    I have the FA 50mm f/1.4. I t was one of the first lenses I bought when I got my brand new Pentax K10D. I wanted something fast for low light shots, bokeh, easy to carry. It spent a lot of time on my camera and still use it often. I have several 50's that are manual focus, but when I need auto focus the FA 50 gets the nod.

    I got the 18-135 not long ago, to replace my 18-55 Kit lens as an always stay on lens for humid and dusty situations, which I encounter most of the time on my Africa trips. But unfortunaly, it will take a while until I will be able to go on my next trip and start using this lens more.
    I didn't took much pictures until now, but I was impressed with this lens from the first photo I took.
    I also have the Pentax-M version of the 50mm f/1.4 which I bought from an old man in a little shop somewhere in the Medina of Marrakesh some years ago for only 120DH. The lens was not in a good shape, it looks like it was droped once really hard, but the optics works fine. It's my favorite lens for my REVUE AC4 SP.

    Another interesting 35-70 is the Minolta 35-70mm f4 Macro MD. Like the Pentax, it is 70 at its shortest, but it has a very useful macro function which allows a much shorter minimum focus difference. Image quality is excellent.

    I have owned the SMC Pentax-M 40mm f/2.8 at least three times in my life (bought it for the first time in the late 1970s for my Pentax MX). It's a terrific lens, and I personally would keep it over my 43mm Limited if I had to.

  • @averagesongcontestan
    @averagesongcontestan Před 3 lety +1

    The 18-135 came to me with my first Pentax camera, the K-S2. It's the perfect lens to have on the camera if you're not gonna take anything else. But since I got the 55-300 PLM, that's what lives on the K-S2 most of the time, and for a 2 lens kit I'll rather take the Sigma 17-50 instead of the 18-135 (if I don't expect rain, that is). And some primes fight for their right to be on the camera as well, the 40, 70 and 100 (and a 21 is on its way to me :) ). A shorter macro would be nice sometimes, and I've heard good things about the 35 as well as the 50s. I've got the FA 50/1.4 as well. At 1.4 it's not easy, can be soft, but if everything comes together the images are great. I'm not sure I'd get the DFA for its cost, size and weight. The DA* 55/1.4 is supposed to be a great middleground, but I'm worried about SDM failure. And the 43 is a great rendering lens as well, and 1.9 on the K-1 is comparable to 1.4 on the K-S2, so I'm not overly concerned with getting something better in the 50s department right now :D

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  Před 3 lety +1

      I hear really good things about the 55-300PLM. It does sound like the walk around lens to beat, as long as you don't need wide.
      You have a great set of primes there! Sounds like you're set! Great kit.

    You wanted to know about "odd" lenses I've used? I consider the Pentacon 300mm f:4 to be different. Originally built for use with a mid-frame Pentacon camera, I have to adapt it for use on my Pentax K1.
    This is a totally manual lens that I used while in the camera's manual mode. Two beautiful Trumpeter Swans were photographed as they flew from the area after a week of swimming around a nearby lake. It has proven to be very good in regular photographic use also.

  • @renegrunwald2937
    @renegrunwald2937 Před 3 lety +1

    Hey, I owned/own all of these lenses and totally agree with 18-135, but I decided to keep the 16-85mm instead because I needed more angle of view and 85mm was enough for me, and added a samyang 135mm F2 instead. The 35-70 is not easy to find without fungus, because of its zoom construction air is pumping in if you zoom in to 70mm. So fungus will find a place inside 😔. But it is a great lens. The M40 is a great lens for old film cameras, but the 40mm XS is extremely much more impressive. Less weight, less dimensions, autofocus (can't understand where this takes place inside...magical....or just incredible engineeringl) and the 40mm is great for point and shoot. The others I own too, but I like the F series much more than the FA series 50mm and Macro.
    I owned many Pentax lenses and still own a lot, but these 5 I would ever buy again:
    Digital/ APS-C:
    1) DA 40mm f2.8 XS
    2) DA 50mm F1.8 (or if your budget agrees: DA* 55mm F1.4)
    3) DA 16-85mm
    4) DA 35mm F2.8 limited macro
    5) DA* 50-135mm F2.8 (great for portrait)
    On film/full frame:
    1) F 28mm F2.8
    2) A 50mm F1.4/1.7 (or if budget agrees: A50F1.2)
    3) F 50mm F2.8 Macro
    4) A Zoom 35-70 ( very good contrasts)
    5) SMC 500mm F4.5 (the Monster! For astro/ birds)
    Best wishes

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  Před 3 lety +1

      I sold my Samyang 135mm f2 this year (did you buy mine? Haha). It is a fantastic lens, I just lost my use for it (mainly used for astro, now I use DA* 300mm). I really think it's one of the best primes you can get on K mount. I know people will fight me for that though because it's not a Pentax branded lens :)
      I agree about the F series. I'm in love with mine. This year I picked up a few to have four total.
      F 28mm f2.8
      F 50mm f1.7
      F 100mm f2.8 macro
      F 135mm f2.8
      I think I would try a 50 1.4 and a 50 2.8 macro on the series as well, but would have a hard time having so many 50's. Already have an SMC 50 1.2 as well. I really like that one on film.
      Thanks for the recommendations!

    Most of my lenses are vintage (inexpensive). My K1 mk ii is my everyday camera body and the last few weeks in my bag are a Kalimar 50mm 1.7 (all manual), Kalimar 135mm 2.8 (spent Sunday making myself only use that one - it felt like I was using a zoom, but I like the results), and a Tokina AT-X 24-40mm 2.8. Something about old glass on digital cameras. The natural darkness around the edges (FF camera does this. Not so much on my K3 Mk ii). I like to use Aperture priority, so I think I'm starting to get lazy and lean on my "Auto" vintage glass more. (I do have a Pentax 28-105mm D FA for my K1 mk ii, but I just don't like using it as much as this old stuff). For my K3 mk ii, I also have a few Sigma lenses (none are prime). I REALLY like my Sigma lenses too, but hate putting my K1 into crop mode more than I love the Sigma lenses (The Sigmas are = sharp as my Pentax 28-105).

      It's really fun! I don't shoot much film. I found for myself that I like it most for shots of my own family, so that's why I don't share it too much on the channel. It takes me over a month to run through 36 exposures, and by the time I've used up enough rolls to want to develop them I have totally forgotten what I shot! Very fun. Might have a film video coming in the next few weeks.

    Actually the M 37-70 apart from the weird zoom pattern you mentioned is one of my favourite lenses.
    Its really sharp with great colours and bokeh. I'd never part from mine.
    Had the fa 50 1.4 but sold it for a A-50 1.7 eventually since I didnt use it that much and the manual 1.7 lenses are much more affordable.
    And more and more I'm thinking of getting a 18-135 for some all in one travel photography.

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  Před 3 lety +1

      The 35-70 really surprised me! A lot of character on that lens. Plenty sharp when you want it to be. Sold mine because I have a million lenses, but it was fun to try.
      Agree about the manual 50's. The M 50 1.7 I think is one of the best deals.
      I can recommend the 18-135 wholeheartedly. It's not flawless, but if you can find one under $200 used I think well worth it for a one or two lens trip.

    • @XXX-vy6xv
      @XXX-vy6xv Před 3 lety

      @@snappiness thought about getting the M 50 1.7 but went for the A series equivalent solely for the Av mode.
      I have found a 18-135 recently for 120€ (about 140$) and I regret not having bought it. The main reason for my doing so is that if I'd take it on a trip I'd have to leave the 50-135* behind!
      And I cant imagine leaving that lens out of my bag!! 😅😅
      Still, a one lens on your camera idea is tempting

    For ability over size, the Lumix 12-32 collapsible micro four thirds zoom takes some beating. On film, the Helios 103 is a stunning lens. Being Contax mount there's no helicoid, so adapting for digital is too complex for me to bother. Canon aps-c 24mm and 40mm pancakes were used constantly when I had a Rebel, the latter on EOS film cameras today. An old Sigma 28mm f1.8 is handy with an S5 for video. There are no bad lenses, only inappropriate subjects.

    Do you have any experience with the Pentax 50mm F1.4 K lens? I'm referring to the pre-M series. The one that has 52mm filter thread. Some folk still mix up M & K series lenses, believing that they are the same. P.s. I own the SMC K Pentax 28mm f3.5 52mm thread, and it's wonderful! The Ks are better built than the Ms, where I've experienced focussing & aperture ring issues, but never on my Ks, including my 55mm F1.8, which I love.
