You don’t necessarily have to be trans to get this movie, but it is laser focused for us.
No literally, it hit so close to home on so many things for me. Was a little unsure where the ending was going but once it did end everything fell into place. And I saw it with my cis friends and afterward some of them just did not get it
I'm so glad that it's resonating the way it should with those who need it most.
Why are people saying there's a trans story in this movie? There's a GL story from the lead female character. But the lead male character has no trans identity, unless transitioning to a TV is an option. He's more Asexual if anything. And nobody seems to have seen what I thought I did. Ands that's his stepfather sexually abusing him! 4:23
@@jonathanthomas2140 because the director/writer says it is. I assumed the father was abusive.
Seriously this movie felt like it reached into my brain and pulled out things I have never told anyone in my life that I always felt were hyperspecific to me.
I feel the same. I wanted to love it so much and like you said, color pallet and aesthetic wise it was fantastic. I couldn't help but feel disappointed leaving the theatre tho. The last 30 minutes I didn't know what the hell was going on.
Same! Thank you for your comment.
It was a 4/10 for me, im not gonna take away that it looks amazing visual, the finishing is great but it didn't work for me. But its weird cause i see this movie totally working and being a cult classic for s specific kind of person.
I can see that as well for sure
I also did not like 😬
Finding my people! lol
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!! I had the chance to see this at Sundance without knowing anything about the story, and left with my head spinning.
Like you said, I appreciated the aesthetics and metaphoric qualities of the film. But in the end, nothing came together or fully resonated with me.
OMG THANK YOU!! I'm seriously out here feeling insane.
Best review on this film I’ve seen. There was no story, just a lot of style over substance.
Thank you 😊
i think you may need to see it again because allegory aside there's a great sci-fi horror story being told! but also as i assume you are a cis woman i understand that this film just may not connect with you because it's very much not For You and that's valid too!
It just wasn’t for me. I didn’t think it was a good sci-fi/horror either. Thank you for your kind comment.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've seen so many reviews where the reviewers were doing back flips to explain how great this "movie" was! It’s crap!
I appreciate the comments I'm getting from those it really spoke to. I'm just not one of them.

I can’t speak for others, but when I saw it there was a Q&A with the writer/director who is Trans. She is the one who said it.
To me the film was about two trans people, one who "kills" their old self to live the life the show made them feel like they needed and who is trying to convince the other person to follow their path. If someone told you that you needed to die to become the person you were meant to be, that it would solve the emptiness in your life, a lot of people would view that as crazy. And yet that is the queer experience, the leap of faith it takes to live authentically in a world that is unsatisfying if you don't change but hostile if you do.
It’s pretty obvious to trans and queer people that it’s a story about learning to accept one’s own queer identity. It’s literally in the beginning of the movie. You see the main kid with the trans flag colors surround him. Also the pink opaque means the pink you cannot see. Like what’s in our hearts. What’s inside us (pink). Also, the Maddy “leaves” when the show ends because Maddy transitions away from her former identity. Maddy was no longer Maddy. Maddy even tells Owen, “that’s not my name”. They then tell Owen about how they were buried alive and reborn. So Maddy is their “dead name”. Which is a thing in the trans community. I can explain more if you need lol
