Fixing the Compression release!

I installed a new cam in my golf cart engine. For whatever reason it would not start. I suspected the compression release to be too much. I took the cam out and ground down the leaver. The engine now starts right up!

I’ve had several come in to shop , to much aluminum in oil and compression release sticks
Replace rings and piston and clean cam or replace it

Making the spring slightly weaker using a fish scale should have worked no?
