I watched 3 other videos trying to learn how to use a timing light. This is the video that taught me👌
Great, absolutely clear and straight forward. I have dealt only with diesel engines and I had no idea how ignition works, but this video made it really clear and simple. Great job.
After watching 5 or 6 other timing light videos, finally one that actually explains how it works, now I feel confident, thanks 🙏
Honestly the best and easiest video on how to use a timing light iv watched so far straight Faward and simple instrustions and well said no back stepping just straight to it thanks for this
I learned more in this video than I have in my automotive class and a community college. My teacher reuses to show us how to use the timing gun because in his previous classes the students didnt pay attention. thanks mr. silva!
Glad to find this video with an explanation on how to adjust the distributor for timing. I will be adjusting my timing here soon in an effort to pass smog. I appreciate you guys making this video. Thanks
if you do not have a timming light get one money well spent you need one to set timming
This is almost perfect. I was also interested in Total advance timing as well.
What a great video absoluty learned alot! Im a new mechanic and im loving the trade
Thank you this is the best video on timing that I’ve seen, to include the knob for the advanced timing. Good stuff!
of the 4 or so videos i watched on this topic, this was the first to actually, and clearly explain this whole system. i know this video is years old now, but its a good one for the archive
Thanks for including the use of a dial-back timing light. I love them.
Great video. Thank you. Question: My ford 302 bogs down at cruising speed. I haven't set total timing yet and am wondering if this might be the cause?
Wonderful explanation 👍🏻
Thanks for such a great and easy tutorial! Can you also explain vacuum advance timing? You briefly mentioned disabling it for this procedure, so I assume this is just for baseline timing. I assume vacuum advance is for when the engine is revved up and timing needs to advance a little more than a couple degrees before TDC? I understand that combustion may not be able to keep up perfectly with increased RPM's and shorter piston dwell times.
best video on the topic I've found so far.
Adjust distributor while engine is running??
This was a super helpful video!
Excellent explanation! Thanks!
Great vid, thanks !
Was about to do this job this morning.
Had to put it off though because timing is checked with the idle at a specific RPM and I dont have a tachometer.
dude spoke with knowledge. grazie!
i've been waiting for a video just like this! thank you
No problem!!
Need more video like this!!!!
Great video
My Chilton’s manual states my car should be 2* BTDC. So should I be toward the “A” or the “R” on my timing tab?
VERY GOOD VID!!! THANKS!
Any suggestions for an 02 L GS300?
Skilled people teaching complex tasks in clear, easy to understand terms is the internet at its best. Thanks for the video.
A year ago I didn't know how to change my oil. Today I hoisted an engine from my car. A little Samurai 1.3 litre, yes, but still...
Thanks again!
Hello Sir, my corolla 2e engine often fails to stop and if it happens, I had to loosen the distributor and turn it while cranking for it to start and when it started, I can use it again for several times before it fails and ang repeat the same process. I haven't experience any problems when it is running. Is there a need to replace the distributor or the issue here is just it's timing?
Been working on cars for a good 20 years now need a good refresh
Does anyone know what this plug goes to? Just replaced the ECM in a 96 mazda b2300. When I fired up the truck it ran for a little bit. Started a second time and it stalls out or doesn't want to start.
After tdc got 3 more marks each like 10mm space, how to set distributor?
it is simole and clearvedio so thank you so much instructor
With the timing be off would it cause damage from test driving up the street for a few seconds amd the. Back down to park it
How does this process change if I locked out my msd distributer
im not a holley guy but damn you guys make good videos
I have a GM 5.3L 350 Long Block, anyone know the optimized timing for such an engine?
Thank You
Hello on my 1990 Chevy Caprice dead center mark
crankshaft it is not indicated engine Oldsmobile 307 I have backfire!
Does the timing cause the car to overheat? I just bought this pickup it sounds like it has some High Performance parts cam etc etc . . Not sure what all it has. I just know it's a sbc350, Thanks
Timing is not going to change your heat output, that's all going to be up to your radiator, thermostat, and water pump/fans.
Could a timing adjustment help to stop a “Dieseling”effect, once the car is turned off?
Poorly adjusted ignition timing can contribute to that, but isn't the only possible cause. Sometimes it's caused by a "hot-spot" in the cylinder due to carbon build-up or other issues.
How do you know where you want your timing ?
Were you find the timing number
Just had timing belt replaced. Now the idle is slightly too low.
I need help fixing it.
I have a 95 mustang gt i just finished replacing lower and upper intake manifold gaskets. I put distributor in checked timing its at 19 and cant move distributor anymore to change timing. Like im off. Do i nerd to take out distributor and then move it which wY?
What did you do? I just got a car with a distributor
@jovanialvarez9310 took distributor out and turned it..reset timimg
Hey everyone 👋🏼 im trying to search for some expertise in what I believe is a ignition system setup problem with a truck i jus recently bought
Is it possible to set the timing initially upon first fire-up of a fresh rebuild with the engine only being turned over by the starter (i.e. no fuel)?
The engine needs to be idling if you do that the starter will most likely burn up
You say that some timing lights won't work with capacitive discharge ignitions, like MSD, so which timing lights are suitable to use with these systems that don't cost a arm and a leg? Thanks.
My engine won’t fire can I use the light an time it using the starter lightly in waves, or does it have to be runnin
Has to be running....when you have your motor on TDC on compression stroke remove dist cap rotor should be at #1 piston.
@@Cstoreri Thankyou this helped me aswell my motor in question doesn’t run
Is the timing belt suppose to move over the pulley?
that belt is the fan belt it has nothing to do with timeing the timeing is set in the distrib.
there is a timing chain that connects crankshaft to the valve (pully) to set the valves at right time has nothing to do with spark timing that happens in the dist that adj. is made by rotating dist. housing to desired deg before tdc.
جيد👍
👍👍👍
if an eng will crank its timeing is close conn a timeing light to a plugwire see where it flasing balancer or pully should have deg marks allway set some degs be fore tdc mark losen dist housing slowly rotate to see flash on deg marks you want tighten dist it is timed
My 454 BBC was ‘pinking’ so after watching this I need to retard the timing. I don’t have a timing gun and can’t see any marking on the balancer so I’ll just have to move the MSD distributor a few degrees anti clockwise ( I think) . Thanks for the explanation, from an American car fan in the UK
I liked the old HEMI there.
👍👍
👍🏽
To the timing on a 96 Dodge van 3.9
What about total timing
Exactly.
My car won’t stay running tho
So how am I supposed to do this
I know a thing or two about cars and did not get a thing about the whole thing
If my light doesn't have a dial, msd distributor locked out what degree would be 36 degree be
FaceTiming on a 96 Dodge van ram 1500 3.9 cargo van
So basically for a stock engine you want timing at 0?
No, the owners manual should mention what it's meant to be under specifications.
Or try a repair manual for your model.
@@Stovokor41 The owners manual for the 350 engine you got in the junk yard?
@@TOMVUTHEPIMP you might be able to tell what it came from using the engine number?
set timing at 5 deg before tdc see how it starts and runs if ok leave as is --- you do not want fire too quick before tdc spark knock and poss. damage to pistons
no l zero is late firing piston already started down --- loss of power set a few degs before tdc
What if the car doesn’t start at all!!!
There's more to timing than with this guy's talking about. It's very important that you check your total advance timing once you reconnect the vacuum.
What if it doesnt start 😅
This video would've been great 40 plus yrs ago.
Ive watched like 4 of these videos and I still don’t get it.... sucks being dumb lol
Im so confused
Naw
I think I'm jus at the wrong video haha
bro checked if the car was in neutral after starting it
I think my timing is too retarded lol
I have been 8 weeks and 2 speed shops and my new build don"t run Holley needs to step up and fix the problems don"t buy a sniper it is a pile of crap.
Hey, John. Please give our experts a call at 866-464-6553. We're more than happy to help!
If you can’t time your engine then you shouldn’t be adding boost or adding a new cam at all.
This video doesnt need to exist.. look in your hand.. a digital device.. right.. i'll leave it at that..
i wonder who could sell me an electronic ignition.. hmm..
