    Great video! I love Chinese characters and find learning them easier as I go on because of gradual familiarity with the components. It has really helped to learn to write them as I have an even greater knowledge of the different parts now and you meet the same ones again and again, of course. Even when you can't find such an obvious meaning as you show here, you can often make up a 'story' for yourself to help you remember. I am always looking up the meaning of components in a dictionary to help me do this!😁 Thank you for this as it consolidated these characters for me😊

    As a student, my impression is that sometimes there are clusters of characters in which the sound element's meaning is relevant, like qing1 in this lesson, but that there are an awful lot of characters in which the radical points towards the general meaning, but the sound element suggests only the sound and does not contribute to the meaning. If all characters were like these variations on "qing," learning them would be a lot easier.

    • @Joan-qe7gm
      @Joan-qe7gm Před 11 měsíci

      Great observation. That was my thinking. Wow, that's great. I wish the top 5,000 words could be segmented in groups that help relate each to the other - different family trees for different easy groupings. Water radical words are easier to spot, for example. I'll take anything that helps recategorize them.

    • @yesencn
      @yesencn Před 11 měsíci

      Most xing-sheng-zi (characters with a meaning radical and a sound radical) follow this rule:
      the sound radical bears the sound and also act as the root of the meaning
      the meaning radical (pian-pang) works a modifier to the root of the meaning.
      A character was made, and through different usage, the meaning became more broad, and some meaning was so frequently used, it made the character's meaning became ambiguous. At that point, a meaning radical was added (or replaced) to the original to make a new character to solely bear the new meaning. That's called gu-jin-zi (classical modern characters). It's very normal in classical Chinese literature.
      But with the sound and meaning of the words changes over time, the modern pronunciation and meaning might not reflect the rule, but the classical Chinese did follow the rule much more strictly. Some old meaning will only be found in cheng-yu (fixed idioms) which is directly reserved from classical Chinese.
