  • Knowing the right size line to use is crucial in bass fishing. You have to figure out what type of line and then what size line. This video explains what size line to use for various techniques and spinning reels versus baitcasting.

    Thanks for the info! I like to fish lighter lines. I'm usually using a 6 to 8 pound for finesse applications, and 10 to 15 for throwing lures.. Unless I'm throwing big swim Baits, then I bump it up because I don't want to lose those expensive Spro BB z's.

    I fish creeks and ponds in a kayak. All I carry are spinning rods. I never understood people saying bait casters were more accurate. I can put a bait wherever I want. Anyway, I throw a lot of smaller baits. A big bass for the creeks is maybe 5 lbs. and in ponds, I have caught my largest, 10.5lbs. I pretty much always use fluorocarbon line, from 4 to 12 lb lines. (I do like catching pan fish so that gear is very light and very small baits, but the panfish taste great). A friend converted my catfishing line to braid. That is where it shines for me. Usually, 20lb.
    I just like spinning reels. Personal choice.

    When spooling a spinning reel with braid, I have purchased 10 pound braid and it says it has equal diameter to 2 pound test (0.15mm). Do I need to go up in my braid size to match for my Assassin FC leader in 10 lbs (.265mm) and should the braid be heavier than the leader?

Im going to follow your suggestion of the 30# braid and 12-15 flouro. Have you ever had and good luck with lure clips instead of retying a new bait everytime? When i salt water fished alot we used Tony clips and they seemed to work good.

    • @JohnCrews

      They can work well for many baits. If you learn a few good knots, it’s easy to retie quick.

    So what type and size line would you use for a fluke on a weighted swimbait hook or a weightless caffeine shad- fished like a soft jerkbait is traditionally. I'm throwing it on 30lb braid to a 10-12 lb fluoro leader but I'm having a tendency to over work the bait I think- especially on shorter casts. Should I change to straight fluroro maybe or just learn not to over work it? Both? Have the same problem with hard jerkbait- braid to leader again- 10 pound fluoro usually- but I over work them to often- and haven't really gotten good at maintaining the proper amount of slack. I'm trying to get a more crisp action, stopping and starting on a dime- but it's very difficult not to hit it too hard or to leave the proper amount of slack in the line as I work it. I've considered changing to a spinning rod to- just to see if that would help- I know a lot of guys swear by them for jerkbaits.

    • @JohnCrews
      @JohnCrews  Před 2 lety

    • @iStryka
      @iStryka Před rokem

      Anything over 8 lbs on a spinning reel will make some baits act unnatural, it also makes casting severely difficult as well as a lot of line memory and rod slapping. Unless your approach is drop shot fishing with a deep spool that takes more than 200 FT of line.
      8 lbs mono, 10 lbs braid + 12 lbs leader or 6/8 lbs Fluoro is your best bet on a medium duty fast tip rod at 6’8-7’2 rod length with a 2000/2500/3000 size spinning reel.

    2 things: 1. Sunline rates their line based on actual breaking strength. Most companies are quite untruthful with the line rating. They rate their line 10% to 50% above the actual breaking strength!!!! So, keep that in your mind when you shop. Compare diameters. If you are used to 15# Berkley big game mono and buy 15# sunline mono you will find it to be much smaller in dia and "not as strong" as the comparable big game. Why? 20# Sunline Super Natural is the same dia as 15# big game! 15# big game is actually 20 pound test! czcams.com/video/SS33aYSB6c4/video.html 2. A leader tip for new people out there. If you are using light line say 10-20 braid to 12# on down fluoro, all you need is an Albright knot. It is easy to tie, very strong, and plenty small enough. FG is the strongest and smallest, but it takes a lot more time. Rod guide size is an important factor as well. I have rods with smaller guides that require an FG. You can't use leader with mico guides.

    Everyone uses a weight line that's too heavy, example, 10lb for sunfish, crappie, ain't no 10lb sunfish, use 4,6lb, more bites, better action😂the one in a million fish isn't going to bite your lure anyway, use proper size line
