Surround 5.1 low frequency speaker test

  • With this test you can explore, how your hi-fi device mixes the surround channels to the loudspeakers. Even if you haven't got the rear speakers and/or sub-woofer, the surround and LFE (Bass) channels might be mixed to the existing speakers. The mixing method depends on the type of your hi-fi device and the actual settings of your device.

The audio in this video is not properly downmixed. Just uploading 5.1 content to CZcams does yield a surround compatible downmix that can be decoded by a matrix decoding technology like Dolby Pro Logic or DTS Neo. CZcams instead will just send all left channels to Stereo L, all right channels to Stereo R and the center equally to Stereo L and R. LFE is sometimes mixed as the Center equally to Stereo L and R, but many times the LFE is discarded. It depends on the downmixer and the way it is configured.
The downmix or mixing method is not performed by the hi-fi devices but by the uploader or by CZcams. The upmixing from 2.0 to 5.1 is performed by the hi-fi devices but this will only work if the downmix is properly done. Otherwise you end up with just Stereo as most people experience.

@Zsolt Farkas Your crossover frequency is probably set too high
You should properly configure the crossover frequency. A lot of people use the default crossover frequency which might be too low causing the subwoofer to only play the extreme low frequencies.
This might be desirable when you use full range speakers which can produce anything as low as 20 Hz and only want the subwoofer to do the extreme low.
But most small systems don't only use the subwoofer for the sub frequencies (

@Zsolt Farkas Multiple subwoofers can create unwanted frequency dips around the room cancelling each other at certain frequencies when they're not carefully calibrated. Unless you have a very big room, best is to just use 1 subwoofer when you have one sub/LFE output or get a receiver that has a multiple LFE outputs preferably one specifically for a back subwoofer.
Maybe your subwoofer(s) also have a separate crossover frequency knob which is set too low. If your receiver does the filtering you should put the crossover knob on the subwoofer(s) to the highest frequency.
80 Hz sound pretty low for standard subwoofers without full range speakers. I have set my crossover frequency to 150 Hz otherwise I experience a gap between 80 and 150 Hz. The roll-off of small speakers is pretty quick below 250 Hz and usually doesn't reach 100 Hz. So it makes sense you experience a gap when your crossover frequency is set to 80 Hz. I made the same mistake because I was convinced anything over 100 Hz is too high. I was wrong.

@@robinheijblom2929 I think there's a language barrier here. It's possible they mean that a switch on the back of the subwoofer is set to LFE. We really need to know what amplifier (probably actually a receiver in this case) and subwoofer they have. From just a quick search, LFE typically means that the sub is wide open crossover-wise so that the crossover duties can be handled upstream. It's no wonder his subwoofer is trying to play sounds it's not intended to. And, yes, this video is horrible for testing surround systems. 😉

I had the same issue. I just figured it out. My receiver was sending LFE + L/R. With fronts on LARGE en surr on SMALL. With the surr the sub would works because the are installed as small. But the fronts had no accompanied subs. Strange since it was installed as LFE + L/R.
The single burst LFE also wasn't working.....
I just found the GLOBAL/INDEPENDENT bass manager option. Apparently, the sub setting choice doesn't work when on GLOBAL.
So the answer to having a solo LFE when provided and accompanied sub when other speakers do:
      Bass manager: INDEPENDANT
Woofer setting: SUB L/R + LFE
      front speakers: LARGE
      centre speaker: LARGE
      surr speakers: SMALL
the SMALL/LARGE depends on your setup and taste. I have big front towers (44 -20.000hz), so I want them set to LARGE to get the full range there. I could also put them to SMALL with the crossover freq at 40hz to save some amp power when it tries to give my front speakers a

@technomaxpro7094 you can enable 5.1 or 7.1 from computer sound card if it supports and it will convert 2channel to 5.1 so any audio source would go through the cross over and sent to respective channels by the sound card driver.
The only real 5.1 supported system i have is the sony car stereo headunit that i use to power my speakers. Although it can only play 5.1 through dvd , but when i play 5.1 dvd's on it the sound is next level. On par with much more expensive av receivers.

@@BenceSomosi You should not rely on CZcams to do the downmixing for you. It is well known, unless specified otherwise, a standard 5.1 to Stereo downmix does not yield a valid Surround encoded Stereo mix. Dolby and DTS advise even when you downmix with their official expensive encoders to feed the result back through a surround decoder and listen to the result.
This is because depending on the source material the front and surround information might interfere with each other. Sometimes you need to add specific delays to the rears but this might cause an undesired tunnel-like effect in the Stereo downmix. There is no way for CZcams or anyone to know exactly if the downmixed result is the actual result you want.
That's why most music on DVD's do not only have a 5.1 mix but also a 2.0 mix because with music a standard stereo downmix causes undesired effects. Sometimes instruments completely disappear.
