    Amazing, you interpreted it correctly. Gerry Rafferty was trying to deal with the loneliness of alcoholism by longing for a better future if he could only quit drinking. Sadly, he never made it. A musical genius with a unique and wonderful singing voice.

    thanks, Cynthia! I have loved this song since the first time I heard it - 18 yrs old, driving home from work on a Friday - along Milwaukee lakefront - out a little early - paycheck cashed - beautiful sunny afternoon - my whole weekend (and life!) ahead -- windows down, radio on -- felt like freedom!

    Rafferty put his heart and soul into this recording. It was his gift to Humanity, and it was well received by those that needed to hear it. Thank you, Gerry, for rescuing so many that were lost.

    Great reaction, you got it, always running away.
    Sadly, it could be the story of Gerry Rafferty's life, he passed in 2011 due to the effects of alcohol. He leaves a legacy of great songs.
    Who needs a chorus when you have the sax solo!

    The diffident Glaswegian, Rafferty, never followed up his biggest hit; a transatlantic smash in 1978 that could have turned him into one of the biggest songwriters going at the time. But he never really liked the limelight and, as it turns out, this song is now best remembered for Raphael Ravenscroft's sax riff (or Hugh Burns' stink-faced guitar solo). Indeed, this song probably contributed to a resurgence in interest in the saxophone. Since deceased, Gerry nevertheless still has a big fan following.

    If you view it as first-person female, the woman takes stock of her situation, sees the shallowness of it all, and does address the problem head on. Her lover makes big promises, but she knows he will never change his ways. He stays, but she gives up that life and returns home. Tough times ahead, but it's not a sad outcome, it's gutsy. Love the song and your reaction. You are blessed with deep empathy. I was a young man when this song came out. Still haunting.

    You came closer than any other reviewer I have heard. The singer is talking about a girl. She went to the big city, thinking it would be easy, but finding out it's not that at all. She meets a loser there, one who talks big but has no follow through, just booze and "one night stands" (cheating on her?). He's never going to actually settle down in some little town, cause he's a "rolling stone". But, in the last verse, she realizes her error and leaves the city and him, going back home.

    What is so sad??
    It's heartfelt, beautiful, and haunting.
    Emotions have more complexity and nuance; than just happiness or sadness.

    • @johnr8095
      @johnr8095 Před 2 lety +1

      It’s sad because like the character who dreams about buying some land and giving up the one night stands but in actuality is going to continue living his life not realizing his dreams the narrator is resigned to the fact that he is probably going to be the same. The song is actually about disappointments and unfulfilled dreams and how people get ground down by life. The last line is uplifting as the sun is shining and he’s going home. So there is always the possibility of finding happiness. But that is the rosy vision. The reality is he’s going to be just like the guy who said he’s going to settle down and give up the booze. He’s not. The narrator is going to be happy in a year but that’s just something he tells himself.
      There’s the dream and then There’s the realty. I won’t deny that it’s haunting and beautiful but is also very sad.
