    Since there's a lot of comments already talking abt the police's ineptitude I wanna focus on something else. Caleb had a more than commendable attitude and handled the situation better than a lot of us. He followed instructions, stayed calm and respectful, and accepted the apology with grace. I'm surprised they even gave an apology but glad that they did more than most ppl get.

Genuinely asking do you understand saying this just reflects quite poorly on you? Like what do you mean by "respectful" exactly? @@scottguthrie8074 everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Why would a police officer be the one to start dishing out punishment, namecalling and disrespect when the suspect is nothing more than that? There is enough time for punishment once the suspect goes trough the legal system and is proven guilty. It's not the officer their job to pass judgement and punishment. The person they aprehent is a human first, suspect second and guilty last.
      How many people will just comply easyer when they know the cops arnt their enemy. That they need to prove their innocence instead of them proving your guilt. When they dont have to fear for their lives during the encounter. When they dont feel like a guilty person because they get disrespected and berated from go.
      behaviour from law enforcement like this would result me, if i was put in sthis situation, in only repeating 1 word over and over "lawyer". I would not be helpfull to any investigation even if i am 100% innocent. Just because 1 wrong word, 1 wrong interpertation, 1 tone of voice could land me in prison for the crime i did not commit just because cops see me as a means to close their case quick and not seeme as a human due to their interactions.

      I have to agree with that but I also have to add that they will often make things up to try to get info out of you so that - in their eyes - you are a criminal. After that it's "safe" for them to assume that you MUST be up to something. And it's getting to the point that they will straight-up falsify reports, edit body cam footage, make false accusations against a potential target of their disdain for the public, misinterpret the facts, plant evidence, lie to their supervisors, extend the traffic stop for the sole purpose of bringing a "sniffing" dog that they will cause a false "read" for and much, much more for the simple reason that they don't know the law, don't care about the Constitution OR our rights and only serve their egos.
      The dilapidated shack of law enforcement education and training needs to be demolished - it is condemned. We need to build a mansion in its place.

I'm also equally pleased that they didn't wind up killing this kid in one of their psychotic wages that we have seen too frequently. This misbehavior occurs because there is absolutely no accountability. The most we usually see are suspensions which the police department is very adept at working around. We couldn’t get in touch with him, so we called the supervisor who eventually found him. The cops grabbed him off the street claiming he fit the description of a suspect. The suspect was a white male with a buzzcut, wearing a red hoodie and cargo shorts. My coworker was a black male with brown overalls and a blue hoodie. I can’t see how they made that mistake.

      Years ago I was training for Marathon and would go running in the evenings after work around 10:00 p.m.. The police had set up a sting operation to try and catch men who were soliciting prostitutes. The undercover police officers were obvious and we're acting like caricatures of prostitutes and were cat calling and tried to get me to come over to them so they could add me to their "score".
      An unfortunate metric of "success" for police and law enforcement are arrest numbers and they don't seem to care if you are innocent. The PD tries to justify their existence with reports to the press of "327 arrests for solicitation of prostitution from this operation" . I took the first turn down a side street and turned on the juice in the opposite direction and never ran on that road again. Never trust the police, especially if you are innocent.
      Cops don't see you as an equal, they are not your friend, they usually hate civilians and hold us in contempt. If they can pin something on you they will. Their behavior is sociopathic, a byproduct of having to only deal with the worst elements of society.

      When they detain the first guy they still suspected he was the person they were looking for, they just wrongly suspected it. Lack of training, power tripping, who knows why. Doesn't make it okay or right and I hope that the guy they pulled out of the house two-door at least filed some sort of complaint he was absolutely wrong in this situation. This is why you don’t talk to the police. Caleb has no legal obligation to even come outside. If the police actually have evidence, they can get a warrant. What they did was run the names of everyone who lives in the area, then decided this guy looks like a criminal. This is not actually reasonable suspicion. Being in close proximity isn’t reasonable suspicion that you actually committed a crime.
    If the police are outside on the loud speaker, simply ignore them. No warrant, no need to even open the door. Talking to them can never help you

    • @sciencetube4574
      @sciencetube4574 Před 10 měsíci +5

      There are exceptions to the warrant requirement. One of them is reasonable suspicion that there is evidence of a serious offence (e.g. armed robbery) inside the house and they need to act fast to avoid its destruction. I would not be so sure about your strategy. You are not required to talk to police beyond identifying yourself, and you shouldn't, but police can give lawful commands, and refusing to obey them would be a charge in and of itself.
      In this case, it is obviously reasonable suspicion if someone lives only a few houses away from the point of first contact, has a criminal history and matches the description of the suspect. From the standpoint of a reasonable person, it is likely that this person might be the suspect. It is not probable cause for an arrest, which is why he was not arrested, but it does make sense for police to look into this possible lead.
      Of course, it is not great that an innocent man was detained for almost an hour and put under the stress of having guns pointed at him and potentially being arrested. But it's not terrible, either. It's just one hour, after all. People here act like he was locked up for life. Detaining a possibly innocent person for an hour if they are a likely candidate for an armed robbery suspect is completely justified. Maybe there should be a small compensation paid, maybe $20 or some sort of coupon, just as a token of apology for the inconvenience of being falsely detained... but that's about all. Police need to investigate serious crimes, and the possibility that an innocent person might be inconvenienced along the way must not stop them.

      Now, I'm not saying that having guns pointed at you is fun. Or that I would like to experience that, ever. Or that it is okay to do it without proper justification. But when it comes to catching an armed robber, it can be justified to point guns at a likely candidate, even if they are just as likely to be innocent. Yeah, it sucks for the innocent person who gets falsely detained for a bit, but it would suck way more if the suspect went free and robbed, possibly murdered, more people.
      The danger to the suspect in this case is vanishingly small. There are thousands of high-risk arrests made in the US every day. In total, about 1000 people are killed by police each year. Of these, the Washington Post database confirms 83% as armed with a deadly weapon. This does not include those with a nonfunctional weapon replica or with no available data. It also does not include those who are unarmed but still attacking the officer. Among the unjustified police shootings, this still does not include those who were resistive or trying to flee. Police shooting a compliant suspect is something that essentially doesn't happen. Among the hundreds of millions of arrests in the past few decades, and the hundreds of videos of the worst of them that I've seen over the years, I am aware of only one case in which a suspect was fully compliant, posed no danger to the police, and still got shot. And that wasn't a high-risk arrest, it was a regular traffic stop.

    The guy they mistook for the suspect did everything right, was super calm, and didn't try to fight or cause a scene or run. They handled him well but he also handled them well, and I hope this video gives a good example to regular people of what to do in this situation. Be quiet, calm, comply, don't act loony or try to flee. I expect police officers to know what to do, but no one teaches citizens to know what to do. It should be common sense but I've seen too many of these videos go terribly wrong when someone indeed does not know how to comply with police orders and make themselves look more like the suspect by trying to run or punch or kick.
