DIY chase car rig | Build breakdown (4K)

  • Hello all and welcome to a build breakdown of my DIY chase car rig. Made from $75 of scrapyard material and lots of trial and error, this rig was made to help me film rolling shots of cars as a solo videographer. Obviously it's not perfect, but for $75 it's pretty great. I'll probably add a safety system in later.

    You are my hero bro! I've spend so much money buying the ready to go rigs which are so expensive. Kudos for building it by yourself!

    OK, love the design, but I see two fatal flaws that can be easily corrected.
    1. You need a stop on it so the camera does not hit the ground. You don't have anything limiting how far it can go down, that could be a very expensive lesson if you hit a big bump and the camera smashes on the road.
    2. You have a spring, you need to add a shock or vibration damper so it does not continue bouncing. If you get just the right frequency, that rig could start bouncing and shake the camera to pieces. You can get a cheap gas lifting cylinder used on car hoods, hatch doors etc. Add that on the opposite side of the spring and it will solve both issues. It can limit travel and dampen the movement.
    Really nice job showing it does not take a million dollars to get pro shots. Thank you for sharing and I hope my suggestion helps.

      Yeah this project is definitely a work in progress. I'm thinking about cleaning up the design a bit more this winter to accommodate for a safety system and dampening system.
      Other than that, the shots on this thing come out great!

    Haven’t finished watching, but my favorite part so far is was you scrolling through CZcams having watched all the videos I JUST finished watching lol. This is a big inspiration for me to bite the bullet and make my own, as the ones I saw on the cheaper end didn’t stabilize as well as I’d like, and the ones that I did like the quality of were nearing 5 digits on cost (I do this purely for fun, not professional or even a side gig). To the scrap pile and Home Depot I go.

      I've since fine tuned the rig a bit more and I'm blown away with how it is turning out.
      I plan on making a V3 rig soon. I'd like to make it fully out of aluminum to keep weight down.
      But yeah, when you're on a budget, you gotta get creative!

    After watching the video, I would add a max out/limit strap just incase that spring ever gives out, the gimbal wont smash against the ground, solid other than that.

      Depending on the height that I choose, the gimbal won't hit the ground.
      The spring is a very thick gauge metal. Plus its really difficult to break as well, so I'm not worried about it just randomly breaking.
      However I am currently working on limit straps / other small improvements.

    I was building one of these last year for my Ronin SC but sold it and bought the RCS-2 which is what you have in the video. I like how you mounted it. I am gonna have the watch the version one video, my isolator doesn't work as good as yours. Dude that footage is super smooth. I have the raven eye which hooks up to the RCS-2 and allows you to stream a live feed and have active track 3.0.

      My next upgrade for the rig is definitely the raven eye. Active tracking would make filming solo so much easier.

    This looks so practical and cheap to make great job man. I really wanna make one but don’t have access to the tools or know how looks like I’m stuck trying to buy one of those $600 rigs lol

      Since you don't have access to any of the DIY tools, I'd recommend you take a look at the PROAIM Airwave V5.
      It's a $450 arm that came out a few months ago. It's designed for smaller gimbals like my DJI RSC-2.

    very coo and looks great, did you add post stabilisation or is that the ibis causing slight blur jitters?

      At the time of making this rig, I used a sigma 30mm f1.4 lens and filmed in Super35 mode which essentially makes the lens a 45mm lens. Long focal length produced waaay too much jittery footage for my taste. The test footage was some of the first and since then I have fixed the jitter issues by switching over to a much wider lens. (16-35mm) I also ended up buying a newer camera, so there's that too.

    The pole you have the setup clamped onto is exactly what I’m needing! Slides right into the tow receiver and extends into a pole at a right angle, what is this item called please? Really helpful vid by the way!

      So it's actually a part that I made myself. It was a 2-in hitch extension piece that I welded a 2-in pipe to.

      I used 2" sprinkler pipe for the main tube that the rig mounts to and then 1" aluminum square tube for a majority of the spring arm.

    I don't know what kind of clamps are on the pipe and where the rubber hose is between the two plates near the steel cables. greeting

      This design isn't really meant to be copied since I build everything for my specific needs, but here's some information about it:
      The clamps are 2-Inch truss clamps and the rubber hose can be anywhere. As long as they connect the two plates together, you'll be fine.

    do you keep active stabilization on the camera when using the gimbal?

      Yeah I leave IBIS on all the time. Although my new camera has gyro data, so I might start using that instead.

      That's a really good question. I'll try and make a CAD design of the whole thing and improve it even further. Might make a new video on it as well.
