Hi, a recessive gene is not an issue for breeding as long as horses are tested and carriers are only bred to clear horses. This is very different from breeding with symptomatic/ homozygous. Arabians and other breeds have multiple recessive genes that we breed around, which if irresponsibly bred result in dead foals and potentially mares. I am very interested in more information on this. Thanks

Horses only need to be heterozygous to be affected with PSSM2, I myself had 3 warmblood horses I bred all by the same mare but different stallions all of these horses had PSSM2 (I didnt know this at the time i bred them) all of them had to be euthanised with just 1 copy of the gene as they were all so badly affected, the 2 geldings were affected with the exact same symptoms at the exact same age both euthanised at 5. The mare had a whole host of issues was passed around from home to home as a problem horse and I euthanised her myself at 13 yrs old with a whole host of issues. In cases where PSSM2 is of higher prevalence in certain breeds, then yes breeding HETEROZYGOUS horses only (50% chance of passing on the gene) to clear horses is the only option. But if there are enough clear horses in the gene pool to breed together then it is not worth the risk as 50% of passing the gene on you could still end up with a foal that becomes severely affected later in life.

@@PSSMAwareness in that case it is a dominant gene which is a completely different kettle of fish and that’s why you need to be careful with clarification

@@arretonarabians8696 It is dominant, im not sure why some have the idea its not.
