  • I don´t often do play alongs, but I thought in this case, what the heck.
    Here´s Steve Howe´s incredible solo from one of the many greatest shows Yes ever done. Wembley Arena 1978. It was broadcast on the BBC Radio on a two hour show called ´The Friday Night Rock Show with Tommy Vance`. I wore the cassette out, the amount of times I played this recording. So for those of you who were never lucky enough to see what Steve Howe played during his solo, here it is ( with a couple of mistakes ) As they knew it was a live radio show, they shortened this version, solo wise, compared to other shows where Steve and Rick would trade licks during the ´Wurm`section. They kept it short to make space for other songs - hence `The Big Medley`. Enjoy, its a lot of fun to play and features Steve at his cheekiest and most brazen. I´m playing this through a little Yamaha THR amp on my desk, and filmed it on an ipad - so take it for what it is.

    Wow that's a CRAZY version. I'm so mad because CZcams got rid of the Joe Bonamassa 2020 version and that was fire, nailed the harmonics.

    That was amazing! Thanks! I was actually looking for the simple version, but will attempt a little of this. That concert must have been amazing to see as well. I see the CZcams videos of Steve going crazy on that song!

      voice_of_reason Cheers, thanks, I first heard that show on Tommy Vances Fri Night show too. I was walking on air after it for about a week. When I compare the solos that everyone played during recordings of the entire tour, it is astounding how different every one is. This solo was probably kept shorter for time / radio broadcast purposes, but it contains all the essential ingredients of Steve Howe's playing. I'm delighted you enjoyed it, and to be able to pass it on.

      you lucky man. They were at the height of their powers at this time. I bet you didn't think you'd be seeing this solo again ! I love how Howe and Wakeman shortened the length of their solos to fit more into the two hour radio show. I love the compactness of the entire show - so much musical genius crammed into the perfect Yes show.

    Awesome...a man after my own heart...I believe this the way to learn. Avoid all humanity, get a home studio.and don’t stop till you get it right! Use sense memory to add the cannabis texture that made it all so incredible. But get down and play it. Awesome . I really do like the live lp though for its sound( remember the 3 lp package?). Steve Howe was so blessed to have played the music with the people he did, making the music he did. Just living that life. Wow...very inspirational. Keep it up.

  • @historicalrecollector5072

    You really are an amazing guitarist, can play Steve absolutely flawlessly, you have taught me how to play Siberian Khatru and Clap and I can’t thank you enough. Keep doing what you do.

      Thank you so much. I am working on a new series of Steve Howe instruction videos, but I´m still learning the way he plays certain things. I´m sure you will enjoy them. They are more focused on showing certain aspects of how he plays, and incorporates different things into his playing, rather than showing complete songs. ( I´ll probably keep doing that too. ) . Thanks once again. ( btw, did you try learning Heart of the Sunrise, it's also on my channel )

    • @johnmorrell
      @johnmorrell  Před 3 lety +1

      Jason, thanks for you comment, but there are a couple of imperfections going on in this version too ! I struggled and struggled to learn Streets of London too, but I just kept at it, bit by bit and slowly but surely I learned . I played it and sung it live hundreds of times on stage, its a rare and haunting song. If you learn SoL, you will be well on your way to learning 'Diary of a man who Disappeared` by Steve Howe ! Listen to them back to back and you'll hear the same chord structure and fingerpicking going on - so it all helps. Good luck, and just keep playing.

    • @johnmorrell
      @johnmorrell  Před 4 lety

      @@johnkowal thanks, but it´s tricky as hell - those three octave jumps twice at two different positions on the neck are a nightmare. He was playing live and pumping adrenaline, so executing it exactly as he played it if futile and a bit pointless. He never plays it the same way twice, except for the leitmotiv But I love that entire concert and this solo was always one of my favourites.

    Ahhh, the In The Round tours...nowadays Howe plays a bit of this and it is always a highlight. Big disappointment when I saw ARW and they did not play this song at all. That lineup had some potential to speed it up. But of all the Yes tours I have seen since 1977, this one was the best hands down.
