  • The secret to getting clean poi stalls! In this video I outline my 3 best tips for getting your stalls as clean as possible with your poi. Stalls are one of the most important poi tricks we ever learn in our poi spinning careers. They're great for transitions, timing and direction shifts, and look really cool in and of themselves. In this poi spinning tutorial, I'm going to give you my 3 favorite tips for how to do poi stalls clean and crisp every time!
    This poi stalls tutorial covers my "box" approach to thinking about stalls as well as how to stall poi using more kinesthetically intuitive methods. Stalls are incredibly helpful poi spinning tricks, so make sure to get these down and get these clean!

    I've been working on my top stalls, and as soon as you mentioned Spin Balls because they are lighter I went right to get mine and work on it. Spin Balls were my first poi I bought; before that I used homemade sock poi.

    Drex, you're the best poi teacher ever. You've really accelerated my learning.
    I haven't gone through all of your dozen youtube stall videos yet, but here are my impressions so far. Stalls are generally harder than they look, especially top horizontals, and they really require a lot of control. Each stall has two parts: getting in and getting out. As I develop fluidity, getting in and out becomes all one sequence of movements. Getting in involves decelerating the poi head. Getting out means keeping control and smoothly re-accelerating the poi head into motion. For best technique, the poi leash stays straight. I want to use varying tension in the leash during the entire sequence to decelerate, then accelerate the poi head. To me, the key part of the sequence, is initiating the poi head's transition from circular to linear. It requires a lot of finesse. With lots of reps, all of this should become natural and fluid. Drex, you certainly make it all look easy.

    Your explanation wasn't just over simplified; it was pretty much wrong.
    When the poi is at one of the four cardinal points of the circle that meets the box its momentum is exactly perpendicular to the poi which is what cause the box to form. If you move your hand to stall at the edge of the circle you're no longer changing the poi's momentum thus it goes in a straight line instead of in a circle. You're cancelling out its vector rather than its force.
    Other than that, great video, the box idea really helped my stalls a lot :D

    • @DrexFactor
      @DrexFactor  Před 6 lety +3

      Ha! I knew I was gonna catch hell on that one. I kind of went into this with an ELI5 mindset--lots of people watching this video won't have much math or science under their belt. At some point I'd love to do a video on vectors and how the physics of movement vectors tie into what we do with poi spinning (orbitals are a great demonstration of the conservation of angular momentum), but even just setting up that explanation would have taken half this video so I settled for something that I thought sounded reasonably correct for the lay person.
      Hopefully my bad explanation didn't distract too much from the lesson and thanks for keeping me honest!

    • @DrexFactor
      @DrexFactor  Před 6 lety +2

      Lolz Of course...watching it now it dawns on me that I could've cut out that explanation entirely and the video still would have worked. Hindsight and all that. :-P

    • @kiwiboy1999
      @kiwiboy1999 Před 6 lety +2

      DrexFactor Poi It didn't take anything away from the video really, I just figured if someone wanted a more detailed explanation it's here for them to read 😄
      This is a bit far-fetched possibly:
      For a more detailed explanation of the physics of poi, you could collab with a science CZcams channel. It'd give them a good chance to explain the physics of momentum and could attract new people to an extremely enjoyable activity. It's an idea 😅
