It’s such a wild song to sing to a man who’d been broken by World War I. So brilliantly done. It speaks about a boy who was “merry in his sweet happiness” until a “misfortune came over him” and “caused him to stray from the land - “betrayed by the black velvet hand” of the wealthy and privileged who sent him to war. That's obviously Tommy. But it doesn’t stop there (!) - the last verse talks about a girl, who the boy thinks is the “queen of the land,” even though her hair is tied with a “black velvet band.” That’s Grace!

Regardless of their feelings to Grace, they can't deny the love shared by both and when she died, Tommy just gave up and accepted who he is and worse.
Grace sacrificed everything to be with Tommy. If that's not true love, idk what is.

Grace is the only woman that can really heal Tommy’s wounds. So sad she dies early and that becomes another trauma in his life. He’s never again felt alive since her death.

I loved their start of the relationship. She was such a nice character, but with a personality. I don't know why they made her so boring in the season when they got married, they watered her down completely... such a shame.
Because she was being written off so they didn't want her to be anything else other than Tommy's light. His hope for a better life away from crime. That way, the end of her arc could be that much more heartbreaking. I don't find it boring, I found it surreal that Tommy finally had a woman who he could grow old with that encouraged the best in him and he truly wanted to change.

Every time Grace lied, and she was about to answer, Tommy seems to answer it 1st, his own questions. Maybe im just over thinking but it kinda feels that way somehow. He knows she is lying but would overlook and that whatever gets out of her mouth, sad or not, lies or not, he might not care at all. He was already in love. ❤️ Tommy x Grace forever!

My dad’s work allowed us opportunity to travel especially the east coast in the U.S. and England and Europe. I have to admit the most beautiful men and women-but especially men-were of Celtic heritage. The Irish guys were just drop dead gorgeous, hilarious as hell and amazing ability to banter. And that quality just multiplies their charm. However, the drink is really a huge thing for them and there is such a melancholy to them. I couldn’t really relate to this sadness. I dated a gorgeous American guy who is very proud of being Irish and knows his family’s history. He was from New York and went to all of the best and expensive schools. But melancholy. I then dated a British who was Welsh. Very similar. Melancholy. The Welsh National Anthem is very sad. I never thought being sad could be such a beautiful human emotion. But those Celtic men make it so. 🥰
