The best thing to do when a bear is following you slowly like mama is with her babies there step off of the trail, let her go. She is no trouble to you get out of her way and she won’t follow you no more she respect and get off the trail it was her first.

They live in bear country and keep dog food outside in the shed? smart.
Never run from a bear, they will catch you. They run faster and climb better. Stay calm, look big, yell and scream especially with a black bear and always take bear spray and a knife, preferably a firearm if possible.
Back away slowly and give the bear space.
Never, ever feed bears or leave food or trash where they can get it.
Bears must retain their natural fear of humans.
If you are foolish enough to feed them and risk your own life, think of some innocent child who may not be so lucky if a bear expects to be fed and approaches a child or any human without food.
If you think you "know" the wild bears you feed, look up how Donna Munson thought the same and Barbara Paschke. Both were attacked and one of them didn't make it, by bears they "knew" and fed. Don't do it. It's also illegal in many places.
