  • Tested Foil Drive Assist+ with Axis 5'1" 90L board, Axis 4'6" 37L board, and a Dakine Cyclone 6m wing with the Axis 5'1" 90L board for an assisted start in light wind.
My thoughts on the Foil Drive system after trying it out on a couple different setups. Nick and Brian, with Fin and Foil, provided great instruction and demonstration for operating the drive. I rode their drive/foil setups for about an hour, but in that short time, I was able to see how this system fits in that space between completely unpowered foil setups and eFoils. This system is a gateway into advancing your foiling skills in prone, SUP, down winding, and wing foiling. The simple process of getting you on foil opens the opportunities to progress from there. The system is not an eFoil replacement per se, but is something uniquely suited to truly assist the foil enthusiast.

I love the foil drive plus..... I decided I wanted to try wingfoiling (at 77) but thought it would be easiest to first learn to ride a foil.....so I purchased the foil drive plus last summer and got to ride it about 25 days ..... I weigh 150lbs and am getting about 30min riding time per battery ( after 70 recharges) using it efoiling ....plenty for me currently although I now have an extra battery.....I was interested in the lift and flight last year but the weight of about 80lbs would be too much to haul around ...... I currently have a large Naish 140L board with an axix system with a large front wing (2100 sqcm) Hopefully we'll get some wind soon ....

Very cool! Yes, that’s a big disadvantage to the pure eFoil systems is their weight. The Foil Drive isn’t feature light either, but it’s definitely more manageable when compared to an eFoil. Thank you sharing your story, that’s super cool to hear about your progression into this world of foiling. 🙌

I have had more solid wave rides in the 30 days from using this, than the 6 months prior winging combined. I ride 2 to 3 times a day. I never check the wind anymore. I never expected to be so consumed by this. If I had gotten it during the windy spring months, it might have went a different route. This is the answer to stay sharp and continue progress when the wind dies for weeks at a time.
    🤙

foildrive+ is great for efoiling and learning to foil. You can go for as long as 20-25 min on a single battery charge

Hey Travis, thanks for your insight! It's always cool seeing people's reactions and hearing where they feel it's best suited.
I see your Mountain Bike in the background, both Ben and Paul coming from MTB and we refer to our assist systems a lot ebikes. You'd never go take a Motorbike (Or dirtbike depending where you're from!), onto mountain bike trails, that's not what they're designed for. A performance based ebike, however, it can help you with your ascents or get you back to the top of the hill, without compromising the mountain bike feel on your way down.
Next time you get a change to take one for a ride, there's a few flatwater take off videos and pump videos on our channel that might help you out on the smaller board!
Looking forward to having more Florida Foilers our Foildriving 🤙

I have one and I don't really like it. For efoiling, it only lasts about 15-20 minutes and requires a big foil. For wing foiling, it's a pain to sail with the RC in my hand and still control the throttle. Then once up, you have the extra weight and potential drag. Instead I recommend saving the money and spending it on an 8m wing, huge HA foil, or a DW board. Switching between efoiling and wing foiling requires a bit of effort and I have to adjust the motor pod and re-tape the cord. The true purpose is fat-boy/old-man prone and downwind foiling which would be awesome if I was in the ocean instead of choppy, wind swelled Lake Michigan.

Hi! Thank you for sharing your experience and insight. I can appreciate that depending on your water conditions how this is more of a pain than a help. When I first started wing foiling I was turned off from completing my DIY eFoil because I took an eFoil lesson and instantly found it to be far less magical than winging. I think it’s a different story when it comes to ocean wave riding and gliding, especially on Florida coasts where the wind is generally light. I do like your alternative solutions and that’s why I have an 8m Cabrinha Vision along with my 1240 foil-deadly light wind combo.
