- Hello The Way We Wore fans!
This video features Doris' collection of late teens and 1920s designers: Fortuny, Gallenga, and Babani. All three of these designers were innovators creating methods for pleating, stenciling metal paints on silk velvets, as well as processes for dying fabric. Their stylized garments captured the aesthetic of the time where women dressed in less restrictive, more freeing garments. The Delphos Gowns were an admired fashion, which were worn by Isadora Duncan and Sandra Bernhardt.
We hope you fall in love with these amazing pieces with their rich colors, prints, textures, and dramatic draped silhouettes. They define effortless style, keeping them in vogue.

I honestly can hear you talk about fashion like this for hours
Ooh waw. What a treat to see Fortuny and Gallenga in video. I would love to wear some of her scarves
I remember storing an accordion pleated linen skirt I had years ago in exactly that way. I must have been told when I bought it to do that, though honestly I don't recall. I just remember doing all that twisting, while it was barely damp to maintain the pleats.
Fabulous fabulous fabulous!! Beautiful creations and an intelligent host!!
I'm not normally a fashion lover, but i can see these are sooo beautiful and elegant.
Came back from _That Pop Culture Show_ podcast to hear more on Fortuny and Gallenga.
To see these garments in their original color knowing that they were worn in the early 1900's to the 1920's is very exciting! Most photographs and film footage of them would be in black and white, so getting to see the color and the design and stenciling of the piece today is amazing!
I love your videos and the time and effort that you put into them. I'm learning so much!
Thank you!
I have just became a huge fan, I was born to late, I love anything from the 40s , music, clothes, and furniture. Enjoying your channel. Thanks!!!
i'm french and it was a legend :
the delfos dress could pass through a ring ! Many thanks To share your precious knowledge
Thank you for another fantastic fashion lesson! 😍👗👜👍
Oh my God the Fortuny dress, i never expected you to have that. Ive seen the black one with his distinctive pleading. You have such an exquisit taste. Thank you so much for sharing your archives with us. You really own jewels of time. Saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱
Visiting your store would be my Disneyland. What a magical place!
Edit: I loved how you showed how to store pleats. I'd love to see how you store and care for vintage pieces.
Cece Wonderwoman Thanks for this suggestion. I should do an episode on what to avoid and look for when shopping for vintage and how to care would be a good addition to that.
Stay tuned....
Thanks for watching.
Doris
@@thewaywewore7371 That would be amazing, thank you!
I've learned so much from your videos.
I've been a fan of vintage for 20+ yrs, and I'm still learning more. 😊
Doris I love your episodes! I feel a kindred spirit & part of the same tribe as you so often call it. That being said…the beginning fortuny piece reminds me of a blouse (not expensive) that I purchased in 2007 for my first teaching job in public education. It made me feel soooo beautiful & the 1st day I wore it to school one of my students said “awww your top reminds me of a couch my grandmother used to have”..😞. I never wore it again but if I could go back I’d wear it frequently!!!
Amazing pieces. The fabrics are so relevant to today. Just beautiful and timeless.
I don't know how you're ever able to let go of these pieces. They're just incredible!
Nico Desanti Hi Nico! After nearly 40 years in the business you know when you let go of something, usually something even better appears.
Thanks for your kind words.
Doris
Thanks, Doris!
The lavender coat looked great when you held it next to you. You should wear it. All are beautiful especially the show off!
Doris, this has been my favourite episode to date. I absolutely adore this time period in fashion, these pieces are outstanding. Thank you!
Ugh what sumptuous fabrics and intricate designs so beautiful
I LOVE this chanel. PLEASE never stop. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wonderful profound! It’s all fascinating! Thank you!!!
What stunning stunning garments
You have taught me so much about fashion, that you are my hero. Thank you so much!!
agent_skyewidow Hi there. Thanks for the huge compliment but you know- all of this info is out there, ready to be searched on the internet. My hope is that I get people curious enough to actually dig a little deeper.
Thanks for watching!
Doris
I enjoy the teaching if history behind the garments. I also love the outfit she is wearing as it compliments her nicely.
Lots of timeless pieces
I WISH THAT I COULD GET THESE DRESSES TODAY! INSTEAD OF THE CRAP THAT IS SOLD IN STORES TODAY.
WOW I love silk velvet.
The showoff piece is stunning. I love it.
OBSESSED with Babani!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Thank you for this new line of designers using actual metals. (New to me) The use of venetian glass has opened up new avenues for me! As for the stolen label, i have found a few vintage dresses that had these labels sewn into them after removing the original makers label! I have learned to check stitching on labels!
Fortysomething BadGirls You are absolutely right about people sewing labels in. It’s an unfortunate reality in my industry so it always best to inspect and look for signs that indicate a problem. Thanks for your comment.
Doris
Years ago I read a book on crazy parenting (can't remember the title) that mentioned the mother of a kindergartner going into expensive children's stores, taking dresses into the dressing room, and snipping out the labels. She would sew them into cheaper items for her child. Just insane. I hope the child grew up to be an honest woman.
OMG, I’m so happy you decided to do a CZcams channel. I was obsessed with your show.
Another fantastic fashion/history lesson! Thanks Doris!
Doris you really outdid yourself with one!
Rouge Et Noir ☺️➕👍🏼
That gallenga caftan is spectacular! And the trivia about overdyes and murano glass and the delphos and peplos ones are so chic! Puddles really add drama! The showoff has such a nice print. I was wondering when u would mention poiret! Thankyou for these short talks, doris! Teecee =] xoxo
Doris, Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to former fashions. The way you man handle the merchandise with such passion would make a curator scream. Definitely host special guests! Any antique Lanvin by any chance? Love the show and thanks again.
The second gown reminds me of Duchess Catherine and her Bond gown worn recently ! The drape and shoulder treatment.
These gorgeous pieces have a wonderful Mediterranean feel, between the Juliet sleeves, the supple velvet, the contrast between metallics and color, and the patterns inspired by antiquity, these amazing pieces look like something out of the marriage trousseau of a Byzantine empress!
So glad you’re on CZcams, I can’t find you on TV anymore. I love learning from you. 🙂
Beautiful pieces. Enjoy your teaching so much.
Oh my god 🤯 those are art works ❤️❤️❤️
I am so glad there is someone like you in this world collecting these beautiful designs and also sharing them with the world in a video. thanks.
Another fantastic episode! Thank you!
So inspiring Thank you Doris Regards from Ireland 🇮🇪 x
PEACEATLAST Thank you! I hope to visit your beautiful country one day. Best regards to you.
Doris
Thank you Doris for sharing your expert knowledge of fashion history. Would you please do a video on the clothing of Norman Norell or Don Loper? Are the pieces that you show in your videos for sale or are they part of your private collection? I think it would be interesting if you would share the value of the clothing you show? Thank you! ❤
Very Sumptuous and beautiful pieces.
Wow a Fortuny!!!
Absolutely, wonderful pieces. I can feel your passion and reverence towards the designers and their designs. Thank you for your wonderful work. You’re absolutely right, people steal labels which to me is absolutely disgusting, I’ve seen wonderful pieces that have been ruined like that. Take care and thank you again for everything.
TFS!!! Fabulous!!! 👍👍👍👍👍✌️❤️
Thank you for inspiring classes in isolation.
Anything on Paul Poiret? My grandmother had a closet full. When he went out of business they were selling his fabric for rags. The original auction.
I just love listening to Doris talk about a piece of history! :)
Perfect timing again! Just what I need on this cold, rainy night in
Just stunning workmanship on these pieces! Watching you is a major treat.
Thank you for your show. I love watching. I’m learning so much. 💜
Oh Doris, if I win the lottery, I'm spending weeks at your store.
The first Fortuny piece looks like a book from the side and I love it
OMG! A Delphos dress!!! your collection is awesome and you store is pure joy!
If you ever go to shop the fleas in Paris, take us with you please!
omfug I’ll think about the logistics of doing this.
@the way we wore. I live in France, I’ll meet you in Paris and be your camera girl!
This video is a great companion to the recent announcement of the 2020 Met Gala theme: "About Time: Fashion and Duration."
Mariko True I’m excited to find out more about what they plan to showcase. Thanks for your comment.
Doris
Excellent prseentation! I have been an avid admirer of Fortuny ever since I was fortunate to see the Fortuny retrospective that was sponsored at the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 70's and I had the pleasure of meeting the Contessa Gozzi that at the time was the caretaker of the Fortuny estate and Studios in Venice.
I wish we could see them on a real model, they all look gorgeous.
That would be an absolute dream ✨❣️
Doris is the best, I hope one day booking an appointment with her next time I go to LA
Sinuhe Guzmán Awwww. Thanks for that compliment! Please reach out when you plan your next trip. I can show you the inspiration room and my stash hiding in the office. BTW- how do you pronounce your first name?
Doris

(every time Doris says: Dufy, my heart skips a beat :)
David Anderson Hi David. And your comment took me to my “happy place”. Thanks so much David. If you like Dufy- you should look up Poiret’s Atelier Martine. So many beautiful crafted things to integrate into his designs.
Thank you for watching!

I love the dress/tunic you're wearing in the showoff. Can you tell us a little about that? I loved this week's episode. Such beautiful garments and workmanship. Brava!
Murielle Sey Hi Murielle. Thanks for taking the time to comment. The dress I’m wearing is actually hand dyed and stenciled .... keeping in the theme of this episode. I wish I could tell you who made it but I purchased it in a consignment shop and the previous owner took the label out.
Thanks for your interest and your kind words.
Doris
My 3 absolute favorites, poirot, fortuny and vionnet. Fabulous presentation. By any chance did you know theadora van runkle?

I guess you can tell by now I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL ♥️ Keep up the the great work ‼️
thanks for this wonderful information.
first id like to say you look extra fab in this episode in both outfits,i really love the fact that we get to enjoy with you ,the beauty ,artistry and history of these amazing periods .its good especially for younger people to be educated and see that fabulous predates beyonce and rihanna ,im intrigued to find out more about tina chow ,thanks for that bit of info
richardm239 Thanks for your kind words. And yes- my hope and intention is to inspire curiosity, especially with a younger audience. We have the green movement on our side! 👍🏼
@@thewaywewore7371 i have been researching tina chow since this episode , she had that 80s androgynous look with a 1920s style and glamour .i truly love learning about interesting ,creative ,original people ,i admire the fact that she was open about her hiv ,it as very brave of her at that period of time ,looking forward to future gems thanks again
Fabulous is right - if ever word was used to best effect - it's Here :) I think Romeo Gigli must have had these people in mind when he was working.
Thank you so much for these videos!
Jessie Joseph Hi Jessie! And I’d like to say you are welcome! I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Doris
speaking of fortuny pleats ... id love a piece on mary mcfadden... i own a few pieces by her .... i loved her since i was little .... love your channel ☺️
I love fashion from this period. The pieces you showed us are beyond fabulous. Oh, how I love the coats. Thank you so much for presenting these for us.
Would love to see any Oleg Cassini gowns you might have possibly.
Thanks for sharing, this is very interesting, love your channel. I collect vintage fashion in general, from 1800s to and including the 90s. My favorite era is 1890s but I mostly wear 30s and 40s. I own several very interesting and elaborate pieces, maybe you could do a video about vintage care and preservation ? I keep my vintage in a dark cool room. Some pieces are on hangers but most of it is in boxes. You should do a book :)
Beautiful video! Thank you so much. Doris, do you own any pieces by Poiret? Would love to see that video. I find much of his work to be more modern than most contemporary RTW. His wife Denise must've been the most fashionable woman in Paris at the time. Also I dream of having visited his One Thousand and Second Night party. Maybe in a past life.
I'm in the UK I'd give anything to come and shop in your store for a few hours 💕 love the videos thankyou
I'm guessing Mary McFadden found inspiration for her many signature pleated gowns in the creations by Fortuny and Babani.
Love the clothes you wear!
Thanks Cassandra. Dressing myself has been a challenge because of pandemic pounds and just life and getting older. I really appreciate the compliment.
Doris
@@thewaywewore7371, well, Doris, I have a little bit of understanding as I have a disability and use a power wheelchair to get around, and require care givers/home help workers to help me out with different things during the day and evening. As I am now nearly 62 years old, and almost 20 kilograms heavier than I used to be, I have to dress accordingly, no glamorous or impractical clothing and shoes for me! It can get a bit demoralizing at times but I continue to love and trust God for everything. Love and hugs to you!
@@thewaywewore7371 I also forgot to mention I will probably never be able to visit the USA, and your shop, because I have this disability. But I still enjoy your videos! Keep up with the good work!
Loving the videos KEEP THEM COMING!!! 🎉😍 are there any thoughts on doing videos on film style fashion like when Gaelle Paul did the film noir magazine shoot for S magazine, would love to see more of those darker styles
Only Fortuny was able to perfect the silk pleating.Patricia Lester tried it in the 80s.Babani used to buy Fortuny pleated dresses and put his own label in.
harry connor Hi Harry. Thanks for this comment. I think Patricia Lester was successful with her pleating.... at least with the few pieces I have had of hers.
Just curious where you got the info on Babani buying Fortuny’s dresses? I’d love to read that.
Thanks for your input and interest!
Doris
Loved the Fortuny dress. I have kept a velvet coat from my German grandmother and now I know by whom it was inspired. In Venice they still sell the Delphi dress. Thanks for the video!
I would love to see your beautiful dresses on a real model🎀❣️
Hi Gina. So many of these pieces- especially the Fortuny items - are more collectible vs wearable so I don’t want them on a live person. Putting them on a mannequin is as far as I will go. It’s just easier for me to use the mannequins in all cases so I apologize for not being able to accommodate your request. Thanks for watching!
