It was another world of different and rare pastime or sport! Local residents could just find a way to adapt to or even take full advantage to enjoy it. (When excluding surrounding and atmosphere, would Winter be similar to Autumn for frozen ice as far as temperature was the only concern, I supposed!?)
Thanks for the comment! In the autumn scenes of this video, the thickness of the ice was 5-6 cm. The ice thickens considerably during the winter (by about 50 cm) and also gets a snow cover.

why are you all wearing these heavy backpacks? seems counter intuitive, like okay one or two bringing some supplies for the trip but all seems a bit overkill. would be grateful for an answer.
This is an excellent question! When including the essentials such as a dry bag with a full set of spare clothes, another change of thick socks and gloves, a rescue rope, ice claws, repair tools, a thermos, a down jacket for breaks, the base weight of my waterproof backpack (without food and drinks) is about 5.5 kilograms. I don't find it very heavy. The backpacks look quite bulgy because we don't compress air out of the dry bags (inside the backpacks). We do this as a safety measure, because a dry bag containing air will float a skater who has fallen into the water through the weak ice. The buoyant effect of the backpack makes it easier to get out of the water back onto the ice.
Of course, to take full advantage of the backpack's buoyant effect, the backpack needs to have a crotch strap (like a life jacket) to prevent the backpack from riding up the skater's back when in the water. EDIT: Replaced "leg loops" with "crotch strap".
So most of the weight comes from being prepared for the skater falling through the ice, although that is quite rare among Nordic skaters who have undergone the local club's safety training.

Both! Mostly we return to the same point where we started. However, with good planning, downwind trips are very enjoyable.
