    At least we have them in Austria (similar neighborcountry) and I'm pretty sure, Germany too.

    I think gas stations without personal are quit rare in Germany. In Austria we have some Gasstations without personal, only automats, so you have to put your bank card at first, in some cases, you have to say how much you € want to fuel in, and then you can tank yourself

    • @DerSpeggn
      @DerSpeggn Před 6 měsíci

      We have some of those as well, usually for the night when the personell is off shift. Fully automated ones are rare though.

    • @morbvsclz
      @morbvsclz Před 2 měsíci

      Those are not unmanned stations. In the US you have to pay first, even when there are employees in the station. And when you want to pay cash, you'll have to inside, tell them "I want $50 on pump 4" and pay there and then. Then you can pump. And if you misjudged and don't use it all, you have to go back in to get the rest of your money back.
      So I guess -> Use your card. Much easier. But I feel the US is missing a trick here. In Germany you always go inside to pay. That's where they can also offer you a Snack, a coffee and maybe a pack of gum on top. Surprised the US is missing out on the opportunity for potential sales, very out of character 😀
      I can only imagine having the pumps active before you pay, would lead to so much theft, that they decided against it.

      @@morbvsclz German gas stations, if not directly owned by the big oil companies just earn 1-2 ct (eurocent) per liter. So 30 liters for car would make just 0,30€. But as retail margins are a lot higher, I'd say 30%, to be very typical in germany, but as gas stations have very high prices, we should rather calculate with 40% a gas station can make the double profit from a customer, if the customer just boughts a choculate bar for a Euro.

    I was in the US for 3 months last year and what really annoyed me about the gas stations is that when paying by credit card at the pump, it would often ask for my zip code. with my friends german credit card, no problem, he entered his 5 digit zip code and all good. with my swiss credit card it's a big problem, because our zip codes are only 4 digits, but those god damn gas pumps only accept 5 digit zip codes.... I always had to find a gas station with a cashier and pay with them first.

    If you have to prepay, how do you know the exact amount of fuel to top of the fuel tank?

    • @vorrnth8734
      @vorrnth8734 Před 6 měsíci +5

      At the German automatons you first enter how much is the max you want to pay. If a full tank is below that you are only charged what you pumped.

    • @Arkiasis
      @Arkiasis Před 6 měsíci +2

      Since credit cards are the main payment method in the US. First it charges you the amount you enter. Say $30. Then you fill it up and it stops by $24. Then on your credit card statement it'll say you paid $30 then $24 and then a refund of $30.

      In Belgium, you have to "prepay" as well. By entering your PIN, you pre-authorise payment of the amount that you then decide to fill in. It's quite simple really.
