Love seeing Magma so high! I've always felt that some people were too hard on that album, I think it's one of their most cohesive works. Fortitude is most likely gonna make my album of the year as well, so good!!
Thank you for taking the time to do this.. Gojira has been a revelation for me, personally. I came for the music, and I stay for the lyrics, and their passion. For me it’s The Way of All Flesh/L’Enfant Sauvage/From Mars to Sirius as the top three albums, in no particular order. I see it as the creative core of their career.. at the height of their musicianship, full of unbridled energy, and at that time untethered from the need to be commercially/critically successful. The first two albums were them ascending as musicians and finding their voice.. and their last two albums have been informed by having to carry the pressure of the metal world watching and waiting for each release. It’s hard for artists to be at their peak when working under (often unrealistic) expectations from their audience. They pulled it off, which is in and of itself a feat.. but when I listen I can feel the subtle shift of them knowing they’re being watched. They remain a singular and mighty band, and produce gorgeous and sometimes breathtaking music.

Everyone has a favourite. I think Lizard Skin is my favourite. Terra Incognita is magnifique! Loud and gnarly. I love it. The Way of the Flesh is next, Magma and From Mars to Sirius and Fortitude. It's hard to pick a favourite.
I disagree entirely with your From Mars to Sirius ranking, that album is an 11/10 in my heart, but I can see where you were coming from with the electronic and drawn out sound of The Way of All Flesh, but I still personally love it. Here is my ranking: 1. The Link For Me, absolutely nothing beats Death of Me, Indians, and Inward Movement. Those songs are some of my favorite songs of all time. They make me feel things in my body no other music really does. The combination of Joe’s incredible vocals and the slow riffs is absolutely incredible to my ears. In my honest opinion, Joe’s vocals are the best on this album. They scratch my brain in all the right places. It’s an album that makes me make some of the most ugly faces imaginable. It definitely takes a few listens to enjoy it, it used to be my least favorite album. 2. From Mars to Sirius I mean… do I have to explain myself? Do I? No… 3. The Way of All Flesh An incredible album for sure, but it has a few misses which prevents it from getting in front of the first two. Vacuity is incredible, Toxic Garbage Island is incredible, The Art of Dying, incredible, and it goes on. Joe’s vocals are also really good in this album. 4. L’Enfant Sauvage This album is much more melodic than the rest and a lot less slow and grimy… the way I really like it. However, there are so many incredible riffs on this album. Explosia, The Axe, Mouth of Kala, My Last Creation, This Emptiness, Pain is a Master, all very good songs. I just find this albums different tone to be less appealing than the others listed above, even though it’s still an amazing album. 5. Terra Incognita This is a hot take, since like… I only like 4 songs out of this album. BUT, I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Clone, Satin is a Lawyer, Blow Me Away You - Niverse, Space Time, they are so dang good. The end of Clone is literally… it makes me feel a certain way 😳. 6. Magma This album hasn’t had enough time to grow on me a whole lot, since I haven’t listened to it outside of two or three times… but it’s still lighter than the rest and that makes it less memorable to me. Now don’t get me wrong, Stranded, Silvera, and Only Pain are absolutely CRAZY! But they’re the only ones I can ever remember, except for a single riff from The Cell. Maybe it’ll grow on me more over time, but this album is only above average to me… since it’s still Gojira lol. 7. Fortitude Very similar case to Magma, even more so. I like more songs generally from this album, Born For One Thing, The Chant, The Sphinx, Grind, they’re all great. But, it still places lower than Magma because of how good Stranded and Silvera are. They’re such good songs. Fortitude isn’t bad at all, it’s an amazing album, I just see it as the least mind blowing. If you read all of this, thank you.
Just earned yourself a subscriber! Great video. One of my favorite bands, I can't really rank their albums, but the one I have been listening to a lot lately is The Link.
Interesting ranking. I myself only did the deep dive on them last year after deciding it was time to give them a fair shake. I see where you're coming from even though I personally have the middle era of them in higher regard. The Way of All Flesh and From Mars To Sirius have become two personal all time favorite albums of mine. I suppose to recommend something: if you like alternative rock, maybe check out one of its grandfathers The Replacements. Their catalogue was highly influential on bands like Green Day and Nirvana.

I don't know how much you've listened to these albums but for me Magma and Fortitude got old really quickly. The Way of All Flesh, From Mars to Sirius and L'Enfant Sauvage just don't seem to get old ever. The two latest albums just lack what made Gojira so great IMO.

Quite interesting choices on your ranking. I do feel more close to theirs From Mars to Sirius and the Way of All Flesh, as I think their recent ones sound more "pop". Magma album is indeed quite easy listening, but it doesn't seem so elaborated as a concept/ storyteller as From Mars to Sirius. Some time ago I would totally disagree with you fiercely, but I actually agree with mostly of what you said. I dare to say tho, I would put The Way of All Flesh definitely on par with From Mars To Sirius. And also, Magma has this whole cinematic, darker and restrained vibe because it is filled with grief, since it was around the time of it's production that the mother of the drummer and the vocalist died afaik, I'd say it was the only one Gojira album I hated at first and now I rank it at the highest of them because, for me at least, it is the most sentimental, darker and overall diverse they've ever been, such a shift in sound on the time it released seemed so underwhelming but looking at it now, it just sounds like a natural evolution from L'enfant with high focus on sentiments.
That's really interesting, I didn't know that about their mother dying but that darkness and grief can really be picked up on in the tone of Magma. That cinematic darkness is right up my alley in terms of the music I typically gravitate toward so probably why it's my favorite from them!
It's difficult for me to rank these albums because my playlist with Gojira's favorite songs is very mixed, so I cannot classify each one well. But Magma, Flying Whales, and The way of all flesh have awesome tracks!
Gotta say that Magma Is my favorite, but I love their Debut album too.. if you liked this I think you’ll also enjoy Fit For an Autopsy’s ‘Oh What The Future Holds’ they’re quite heavier than Gojira, but they showed some good versatility on this album, especially Far From Heaven and Two Towers, the latter is a masterpiece
i remember liking the link and terra but some ppl dont like those albums. I will listen to them again. I dont think there is a bad gojira album most of their stuff I like.

I am curious to introduce someone to Gojira/metal with Stranded :) Magma was the first album that got me hooked on Gojira, specifically the songs Pray and Low Lands and it's still my favourite. If you have the time to check out the live version of Pray from the Red Rocks concert, it is a musical masterpiece. As great as their studio recordings are, Gojira's live performances are more powerful and technically flawless. I am wondering if you may have ranked the live version of The Link (The Link Alive) different from the studio version.... I think maybe so.
Mine would be : A+ : "From Mars to Sirius", absolute perfection from start to finish A : "The Link" and "The Way of All Flesh", very different albums, but can't put one above the other B : "Terra Inc." at the very top, almost A tier; "L'Enfant Sauvage" next, and then "Magma" and "Fortitude", almost out of B, but too good to go in C. And nothing in C and D.
It took me more than 10 years of being a metal fan to really enjoy the heavy Gojira stuff, but now, I am convinced The Way of All Flesh is a modern metal masterpiece. You must try another listen.

I think you would really like Poison The Well. They are a more hardcore driven band, but very good. Heavy and melodic and I can’t stress the melodic enough. Deftones and PTW are two of my favorite bands and they also sound nothing alike but at the same time vibe very similarly. You Come Before You and Versions are the best PTW albums in my opinion
Always hurts my heart to see people rank Terra Incognita so low 😂 I personally think it's an easy B-tier album. Serious bangers in there like Clone, Lizard Skin, Love, and Space Time

I admit I do feel that while I like every album, definitely my favorite band next to Lamb of God, but I agree that The Link is my least favorite with the album starting off with songs I find the least appealing.
I humbly respect your opinion, however, The Way of All Flesh is the best album, with From Mars To Sirius a very very very CLOSE second. My top 3 tracks gotta be and in order 1) To Sirius 2) The Way of All Flesh 3) Backbone and everything else falls into place

I think most people prefer their prog music over their groove music, though I always thought they leaned into both.

It's difficult for me to rank these albums because my playlist with Gojira's favorite songs is very mixed, so I cannot classify each one well. But Magma, Flying Whales, and The way of all flesh have awesome tracks!
Gotta say that Magma Is my favorite, but I love their Debut album too.. if you liked this I think you’ll also enjoy Fit For an Autopsy’s ‘Oh What The Future Holds’ they’re quite heavier than Gojira, but they showed some good versatility on this album, especially Far From Heaven and Two Towers, the latter is a masterpiece

Magma was the first album that got me hooked on Gojira, specifically the songs Pray and Low Lands and it's still my favourite. If you have the time to check out the live version of Pray from the Red Rocks concert, it is a musical masterpiece. As great as their studio recordings are, Gojira's live performances are more powerful and technically flawless.
I am wondering if you may have ranked the live version of The Link (The Link Alive) different from the studio version.... I think maybe so.
I will have to check out some of their live performance videos!
Mine would be :
A+ : "From Mars to Sirius", absolute perfection from start to finish
A : "The Link" and "The Way of All Flesh", very different albums, but can't put one above the other
B : "Terra Inc." at the very top, almost A tier; "L'Enfant Sauvage" next, and then "Magma" and "Fortitude", almost out of B, but too good to go in C.
And nothing in C and D.

It took me more than 10 years of being a metal fan to really enjoy the heavy Gojira stuff, but now, I am convinced The Way of All Flesh is a modern metal masterpiece. You must try another listen.

I think you would really like Poison The Well. They are a more hardcore driven band, but very good. Heavy and melodic and I can’t stress the melodic enough. Deftones and PTW are two of my favorite bands and they also sound nothing alike but at the same time vibe very similarly. You Come Before You and Versions are the best PTW albums in my opinion

All of them are amazing and A tier or higher,but Magma is the only perfect one and Fortitude is a step below all the others.
You should check out a single by a band called The Ocean. The song is called Rhyacian: Untimely Meditations (2017 version). I'm not expecting a reaction, but I'd love for you to listen to it and let me know what you think! You and I seem to have VERY similar music taste, so I think you'll like it a lot!

I admit I do feel that while I like every album, definitely my favorite band next to Lamb of God, but I agree that The Link is my least favorite with the album starting off with songs I find the least appealing.
Remembrance from The Link is a great song and definitely memorable for me. That song never fails to make you headbang.

I humbly respect your opinion, however, The Way of All Flesh is the best album, with From Mars To Sirius a very very very CLOSE second. My top 3 tracks gotta be and in order 1) To Sirius 2) The Way of All Flesh 3) Backbone and everything else falls into place

Ah, it pains me to see the link and twoaf on c and d tier. To be fair, gojira have no bad album, magma is probably my least favorite and even that would probably be still a 7/10 for me.

this ranking is terrible! I really respect your opinion in every way except for fortitud, that's a very lazy album, and mars to sirius is a lot better. My ranking is: the link < magma < fortitude < terra incognita < way of all flesh < mars to sirius < lefaunt
