Just imagine being in New York in 2000, in the Lower East Side of Manhatten and you're watching the strokes in the early days in a 1000 people capacity venue listening to this great music. I would do anything to experience that.

Damn. As much as I love Julian's signature nonchalant croon, it's so awesome to hear him sing so passionately on this version. Sounds like he's having the time of his life.

The lyrics for this song is seriously like one of those auditory illusions where people hear different things based on what word they're focusing on because no one can seem to agree on what the correct lyrics are. It's like a rorschach test for your ears

i think the lyrics here are pretty much improvised. it's kind of a skeleton of stuff julian wants to say but it isn't fully fleshed out since it's a demo

I don't know about the lyrics I found on the internet or in the other comments but here's what I heard after listening a couple times, though I think some of it is adlibbed, so maybe we're trying to futilely make complete sense out of Julian's stream of consciousness lol.

The lyrics read like he had some ideas in his head and he was making the lyrics up as he went along a bit here, slowly developing the themes and vocal melodies. Really interesting to hear, McCartney did similar things on that Disney Doc where he just sings the first words he thinks with a melody and slowly fine tunes them.

from this came one of my favorite songs of all-time . . and now it's like I found the original raw director's cut of a classic movie . . except the final version is likely the "producer's cut" after cutting this down tremendously . . but this here should be recorded in studio quality. It's way more advanced
Don Wolfberg It’s actually the complete opposite. The studio version is the artists completed and perfected version. Every detail is analyzed. These demo versions and freestyles often do feel more raw though
@@danniel766 not really. It is the producer who has a lot of input into the recorded version. The producer polishes the artists ideas into a saleable product. It's produced to be commercially successful rather than be a raw artistic outpouring.

He says it in Landmark Music Festival 2015 after playing Someday.
This version was performed live at WFMU on December 21, 2000. I don't believe there is any recording of this song prior to that date, so while it *is* from a live performance I think it's fair to say that it's also an early version of the track, hence the different lyrics. Julian did tend to occasionally alter lines of songs in live performances, but that doesn't appear to be the case here.

I love the raw energy and the melody of this demo but that lyrics are shit compared to the established version 😂. Same as the raw demo of hard to explain. The lyrics to the proper version are what makes the song for me. "When we was young oh man did we have fun, always, always" "You say you wanna stay by my side, darling your heads not right" being two of my fav lines that at some point in my life have had a profound meaning to me...
