The Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, India is famous for being a place of immense devotion and also for some baffling mysteries. Here are a few of the most popular ones:
Defying Gravity: The temple’s crowning glory, the Sudarshan Chakra, is a massive disc-like structure that weighs about a ton. How it was placed on the very top of the temple without cranes or modern machinery is a complete mystery.
    Yug Parivartan
One-Way Flag: The flag that flutters atop the temple seems to defy the laws of wind. It always waves in the opposite direction of the prevailing wind. Legend says it's due to the divine will of the deity.
Missing Shadow: No matter the time of day, the temple’s main dome never casts a shadow. Science offers an explanation - the curvature of the dome causes the shadow to fall on the building itself, making it invisible from the ground.
Silent Roar: As you approach the temple, you can hear the roar of the ocean waves. But the strange part is, once you enter the temple complex, the sound completely vanishes. Devotees believe it's a miracle to create such serenity within the temple walls.
Climbing Feat: Every single day, a priest climbs the near-vertical face of the temple, which is about the height of a 45-storey building, without any safety gear. This is done to change the flag, and neglecting this ritual is believed to bring misfortune.
These are just a few of the mysteries that surround the Jagannath Temple. They add to the temple's mystique and allure, making it a place that continues to fascinate people for centuries.
The Jagannath Ratna Bhandar, meaning "jewel treasury" in Odia, is the revered treasure vault of the Puri Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, India. It is believed to house a collection of immensely valuable gold, diamond, and other precious jewelery that have been donated to the temple deities over the centuries by devotees and kings.
The Ratna Bhandar is divided into two chambers: the inner sanctum, known as the Bhitar Bhandar, and the outer chamber, called the Bahar Bhandar. The outer chamber is opened on special occasions, such as the annual Rath Yatra festival, to adorn the deities with the exquisite jewelry stored there. However, the Bhitar Bhandar was unopened for 46 years until June 2024.
On June 16, 2024, after a gap of 46 years, the Ratna Bhandar was finally reopened under the supervision of a team constituted by the state government. The team included an Orissa High Court judge, the chief administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), and a representative of the Puri's titular king, the Gajapati Maharaja. Although the exact contents of the inner chamber haven't been publicly revealed, media reports suggest it contains a vast collection of gold ornaments, some weighing over 100 tolas each, along with plates made of gold, diamonds, pearls, and corals. There's also a significant amount of silver jewelry stored there.
