  • What has three cylinders, three wheels, and does wheelies? Yamaha's Niken, of course! This new three wheeler is powered by an MT-09 engine but has a funky front end that puts two 15-inch wheels on the ground. Who is it for, how does it work, and what's it like to ride? We answer these questions and more in this episode of OTW.

yes, that's why I became a yamaha owner. It seems like the engineers took over the company and they are having a field day.
First the introduce the crossplane R1...
Then the FZ09 made nakeds cool, fun and affordable.
Then the FZ07 became the standard to beat when it came to entry level nakeds
Then the new R1 came packed to the bone in electronics...
Then the FJ09 becomes an affordable, capable touring bike
Then R3 becomes everyone's favorite first bike
      Then XSR900 scares hipsters shitless...
Then the FZ10 comes to compete with the big european naked dogs...
Then the XSR700 comes to make hipsters happy again...
Then.... the R6 becomes the first japanese 600cc bike with advanced electronics...
      Then the Super Tenere....
      Then this...
I'm really always insterested to see what is Yamaha going to do next.

It looks like regular upside down forks arraigned differently. The custom bits are the connecting parts -- bottom wheel attachments and the entire top end swivel frame, but it doesn't look like it would be higher maintenance then a regular steering bearing. I wouldn't want to crash it though.

I can see definite possibilities of snow and ice applications, or particularly challenging off-road terrain if they make an off-road version. Good job pointing out the dual contact patch thing. Love that Yamaha is pushing the technology. I would want to push a button and have it stand upright on it's own, though, even if it isn't designed to be stable in that way while riding. Maybe some mechanical locking pin even?

Guys McFellas in theory, change bearings every X miles should be enough to keep the system flawless. Don't think they'd use any kind of bushing that could develop play or something... That sounds bomb proof to be honest, even double suspensions and arms to assure alignment and stiffness. I like that a lot!

    • @FelipeLuizDickmann

off road? why? it's less nimble, a lot heavier, a lot wider and just overall too much motorcycle to throw around off road. it would take a lot more energy to ride it off road then a regular off road bike. although I agree it would look badass with fat offroad tires and all...

Agreed. Yamaha rebooted itself with the FZ/MT series. Barky 270° super-light SV killer. Best sounding and arguably one of the best engines in motorcycling ever..... triple, also super light. And don't forget the crossplane R1 i-4 engine right at the backside of the recession of 2008-2009. Yamaha does good stuff, even if you don't agree with everything they do.
Honda? yawwwwwwwn. I guess if I wanted to have scooter-economy and interesting utility in a bike that would never break in 200,000 miles, while letting it shift for me? NC750X, but as a 2nd or 3rd bike.

    • @jabsy5094
      @jabsy5094 Před 6 lety +5

Given its TC and ABS, just adding on some appropriate winter tires and I couldn't see why not.....He did say it requires both feet on the ground to keep up though, so if both tires lose traction, then it seems it doesn't have enough rigidity to stay upright. Both front tires losing traction in snow seems like a certainty so it may not be as efficient in winter as it looks. We'll see.

I think this is mostly about the grip. Not only for braking but look at where the bike sits in a lean. The weight is always centered in a corner with at least one tires contact patch. Meaning you should be able to ride harder, brake sooner, etc.

All you guys hating this bike... It's a brand new type of vehicle, xou can't compare it to a 2 wheeler... Yamaha had the balls to do something new and that is great. Great concept, as well as execution, i would love to own one and give it a blast.

This is a "you love it or you hate it" design. I get both parties. For me, the great thing is that it actually works, a successful technical experience that has still potential to grow in that area. As a touring bike, it should offer a bigger engine with higher windscreen (maybe already available now) make it a real grand traveler. I wonder if you need a motorcycle license for this or is a car license sufficient?

  • @estoylaroca
    @estoylaroca Před 5 lety +2

Disclaimer - I have 0 experience with the Niken.
I ride a tricity (basically the scooter version of this) for about 4-5 years now, and also own other bikes. I must say, the 3 wheels thing is really something.
It's not what you would expect really, as in you don't self balance, or anything of that sort, but riding with it is a different experience.
When I say different, I don't mean anything drastic, like going from riding a roller coaster to a car, but it feels like going from a honda civic to a luxury car.
It still rides a regular motorcycle (besides it being bulkier), but the ride is a lot smoother, especially on non-ideal roads. For example, you see a crack on the road (significant enough to "disturb" your bike") with regular 2 wheels, you either avoid it, or you just tough it out. With 3 wheels on the other hand, while one wheel absorbs it, the other will stay flat on the road. This means that instead of being bumped by the crack, you actually only feel it minimally / nothing at all.
Turns on it seems "heavier" though, but it feels safer in a way. It's like turning with a car, since you feel the bike turning, but you don't feel it "falling" if you get what I mean.

Thanks for your usual decent presentation which as a journalist who rode Niken (our video is coming too) there too, I agree most of what you present but I still have two questions for you:
1- Which 2 wheeled (naked) bike can be leaned for 45 degrees or more, on -the road-, without being leaned as such for the first and the very last time?! ; )
2- Which 2 wheeled bike does not kiss the ground while being subjected to the slippery circumstances which may hardly bother Niken’s front end?
Maybe Yamaha or some other entity like your channel with (I hope ; ) more video production budget must do a demo in slippery surface conditions, a Niken vs Conventional Motorcycle comparison, both with “security wheels on the back” to discover how much an advantage has Niken’s front end over the conventional front end. Our humble first impression is that Niken, while certainly not being an immortality elixir, may not even bother under the circumstances which may immediately wipe out a conventional bike’s front end. There are at least 2 slippery road accidents in my riding history which I believe I would not have if I was riding a Niken which, as you also agree, does not sacrifice the joy of real motorcycle riding...
    Best Regards🙏🏻🖖🏻

Fuat DOMANIC having good wet/“slick” performance isn’t the reason at all to buy a motorcycle. Don’t think for a second that this bike compares to any moto in its class at a track simply because of the additional 2 inches of tire on the pavement and the “45 degree” turning angle.
I’ve been a Yamaha fan all of my life, this is a product for a collector or an extreme “occasional” rider and that’s it. It’s price and quirky design will be the reason why it won’t sell for more than a year. $16,000 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Firat Yildirim So by 90 degrees you mean that u drop it alot? Cause 64-65 degrees is the max for moto gp bikes with the insane tires and setup theyve got. Regular bike riders never go more than 40-45 max!
