Unboxing Oregon: What It's Like Living In Oregon

  • Is everyone in Oregon a hippie?
Does Oregon have the prettiest coast in the country?
    And is Portland really weird?
We’ll answer those questions and more! So put the umbrella away - cause Oregon natives don’t use those stupid things. We’re gonna unbox the state or Oregon! And I’m totally wearing skinny jeans right now. Like SO skinny jeans. I can barely move. But it’s awesome.
Wow. Look at this. The Oregon coastline. Such a pretty place. This rugged coastline might be the most stunningly beautiful stretch of coast in the entire country. It’s not always sunny here, but this coast is truly one of a kind. But of course, Oregon isn’t all pretty coastline. Actually, ecologically, Oregon is one of the most diverse states in the country. And depending on where you live, the PEOPLE are different too. To truly understand Oregon, we need to look at the entire state’s various regions, and understand what each area is like to live in.
This is Oregon. It’s a pretty big state - in size, it ranks 9th biggest in terms of square miles. There’s a lot of parts of the state that are very crowded, and many parts that are really isolated. Like over here. We’ll begin in Eastern Oregon.

    Cowboys hippies
It is such a big state and there is so much to see but there’s issues
There’s a lot of small towns where there’s folks who don’t want to be noticed
There’s a lot of Portland people who just want the world to notice
All the things they do in Portland is to be themselves but always
Others in the state are like can’t we just live our lives in solace?
It’s a state of drugs but there’s more to it than that
    Oregon is complicated
Hipsters ranchers mountains beaches skiers vegans gays and freaks
There’s a different feel here just take a trip with me and see
Waterfalls and ocean cliffs and forests deep with lots of trees
Some wear wranglers some wear suits and then there’s those in skinny jeans

I've lived in Oregon for 50 years. I've been all over the state. Your description of regions was good as well as the homeless situation. That seems to be happening most everywhere these days. One thing you left out is wherever you go in Oregon people pretty much go about their business, live and let live and don't get in each others face.

Third, if you wanna be a true Oregon purist then you should just call it "the freeway". When I was growing up in Oregon that's what everybody called it because it is literally the only freeway in most of the state. When communicating directions to someone nobody ever said "do I need to take i-5?" Everyone would just say "do I need to take the freeway to get there?" There you go.

I moved back to Portland after high school (graduated 1995), and lived here until I moved to Corvallis for 5 years so my (now-ex) could go to college. Came back to Portland in '07, bought a house, lost it in the recession, moved to Seattle in 2010, moved to Pullman in 2016 so I could go to college, and came back to Portland when I graduated in 2019. Have lived here ever since and intend to die here.
Places change. I've seen Portland in the 70s (albeit I was a toddler, but I have my parents stories and photos and such), I've seen Portland in the 90s, I've seen Portland in the 00s, and the 2010s, and we'll see how it changes in the 2020s. I find it ironic that my parents left here in the 70s because of "the crime", but Medford has a way bigger drug and crime problem per capita than Portland. And yet every time I talk to them, they're so freaked out that I'm in Portland because of what they see on the news.

I've been in Portland since 2004, and lived in the Bay Area and Albuquerque in between, college in Eugene. I'm fervently looking for a new place to live, as my mental health can no longer take the constant visuals of desperation on the streets here, nor can I afford to pay for recurrent vandalism and theft. I have PTSD from crime experiences in Albuquerque in the 1990s. Now, it's like my fight or flight response is constantly activated, most days/nights I hear gunshots, then the police planes circle for hours. It seems people have their niche friends, and there's not much room for "outsiders." Not to mention rent increases and predatory landlords, trash everywhere, rats blah blah blah. Realizing that I have to move to have a decent quality of life has been a somber letting go process.

Very accurate. Grew up in Portland. As a child, I thought the crazy junkies that would jump out at cars downtown and start yelling competitions with invisible things across the street... were just silly adult people; I didn't realize they were all taking drugs. When I became an adult, I noticed a big divide between goths and hipsters, almost like a silent war. Unfortunately the hipsters won and the goth community turned into posers. Even the Tillamook Cheese Factory changed... the workers you spied on during the tours used to wave and smile, but now they hold glaring competitions with the paying visitors. The people in Portland are terrible, every person I've ever met growing up there stabbed me in the back. Traffic's really bad, despite all the nice and convenient public transportation and bike options. And there's always some ridicules violent mob blocking traffic for several hours; and when they do that, the people who take public transport then have to walk for miles to get to their destinations because the buses and trains stopped running. It's such a shame, because it's such a beautiful state. Fresh air, clean water, lots of nice rain and dark clouds and mountains of trees... but the people are so aggressively snobbish. Their motto is tolerance and love, but they're so impatiently hateful towards anything that doesn't smoke weed.

I'll eat it on like pizza and tacos, but by itself I just can't eat it even the smell of cheese is gross to me. The ice cream is good though lol. Its a really cool place to visit if you ever get the chance. The tourist part of the factory you can literally see every process of the workers making the cheese from beginning to end, but be prepared in the summer at least it is very busy and crowded with tourists. They just remolded the factory too back in 2018 and is now called the Tillamook Creamery and is much more modern looking now with like hybrid outside inside eating areas where you can like get food or ice cream and sit down and enjoy it.

Oregon was my territory when I was an account manager for a large retailer. I was fortunate enough that year to travel the state and visit many of the cities where a store was located. This was March 2012. I was pretty darn awestruck at the natural beauty of the state. Seriously gorgeous. When visiting Portland I didn’t at the time sense it was crazy and felt fairly safe. 5 years before the 2020 protests reared their ugly head. In Eugene I noticed a shift in the ambiance (not necessarily in a positive direction) and I really liked Bend. I’m pretty conservative so I guess birds of a feather flock together. Free benefits, decriminalization of drugs are magnets for aggravating the homeless situation. For those who really want the help there are avenues to escape it, but many don’t want the help-for whatever reason: mental illness, stubborn resistance or some just plain like the so-called “freedom” they have. It’s a sad state of affairs. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink. Free will trumps all the time. I think there are some solutions but the leaders don’t seem interested in real solutions. Just punish law abiding citizens who pay their taxes and raise their families and don’t want any trouble but have to endure the blight. I have compassion for the downtrodden but have little compassion for those who deliberately choose and decide to live without remorse on a destructive path. But for those who seek and truly want help -that’s honorable.
