- PART 3!! Painting portraits in monochrome is a great exercise in value study. Since there are no colors used besides black and white, you get to focus all of your attention on values and how they mold and sculpt the structures of the face. In this third and final part, I'll show you how I painted in the hair. You will notice in this portrait that the black and white mixtures gives this overall painting a cooler temperature than one completed in just transparent black. I will follow this tutorial up with another grisaille just using a transparent black so that you can see the difference between the two techniques. This painting is a 24x18" canvas stretched over a wooden panel, prepared smooth with liquitex super heavy gesso. Thanks for watching!

I really liked watching the techniques you used to do the hair. Excellent!
thanks so much!
The only way I can get hair to look so real is with a camera.😁 Killer technique man. Looking forward to the drawing tutorials.
thanks! you can 100% do this. You just have to play around with it and get a feel for it.
@@theartworkshop Yeah, I've been at this for years. Not likely to get much better. I just turned 62 two days ago. My thing was mostly fantasy stuff on custom bikes and hot rods. A number of years ago While working at Death Row Motorcycles ,I had a stroke and had to quit. I been lurking around CZcams like, forever. We've talked in the comments before, under my other account "Dude Slick". Anyway I'm giving the whole airbrush channel thing a go. Mostly using vinyl stencils, as after the stroke my free hand has suffered a bit. I just do what I do, where you my friend, just blow my mind.
@@airbrushdungeon Of course I remember you as dude slick. Happy Birthday to you man! Hope you had a great day.
Nailed it! Incredible work and as always great explanations on the techniques used. Yes I thoroughly enjoyed this series as monochrome is a favorite of mine. Hope all is well.
Thanks so much Duane! Plenty of monochrome tutorials in the works. I've been having fun too
Another very well-presented instructional tutorial. Thank you, Mark. Always look forward to Friday uploads for inspiration. Appreciate your consistency and I am anticipating the drawing as it is also one of my favorite mediums. I'm sure you will drop some enlightening technics as you always do. Have a great weekend.
I'm so glad! You are most welcome and thank you so very much for being here. We will 100% be getting into some drawing tutorials! It's easily one of my favorite mediums as well. Hope you have a great weekend as well.
Great information on painting realistic hair, I haven't been setting the burr on my Exacto knife, that explains why I haven't had such good results scratching in hair. Thanks for the information.
Thanks so much Louis. If you hold a new xacto blade overhand and lay it flat, it'll pull out the paint very well. It's def something you have to play around with to get the feel of it.
Grazie maestro per la fantastica lezione.Greetings from Italy
Thanks so much Francesco- Greeting from New York!
Looking forward to the drawing tutorials.
Me too Ken! Should be fun
Sensational work of art. Congratulations! I watched all 3 parts, because I'm going to draw Agnetha Fältskog's (ABBA) and her hair is very blonde.
Thanks so much Jose! She would be a great subject matter for a portrait. If you need any help, let me know!
Thanx again for your vids you are inspiring many of us out here wanting to learn and improve stay safe mark

Awesome as usual.
thanks so much Mark!
More gold, thanks Mark
Thanks so very much, Ryland!!
Wanted to ask, which spyderco stone is that? Having trouble finding that size. Many thanks.
@@PleasureRyland Hey Ryland. The one I'm using here is a diamond sharpening stone. I would suggest trying a sandpaper block first because it's so much easier to use. Sharpening stones can be a bit tricky to get right.
Awesome work!!
thanks Troy!
Thanks
You are the man Tony! Thanks so very much for this.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
👍👍👍👍👍
thank you mag!
💪😎🎸 KILLA 🎸👻
thanks!
Which grit is your Spiderco stone?
I'm using one of the triangle diamond stones here. They work well if you know how to use them. A sandpaper sharpener works very well- much cheaper too!
Can you help me please? I accidently put a chrome paint that you're supposed to brush on into my airbrush and now I can't get it all out of the bottom of the cup. What can I use to break this paint down and hopefully salvage my airbrush. ANY HELP you can offer would be greatly appreciated nand thank you in advance
Of course! What type of paint is it? You'll just have to use the appropriate thinner or cleaner for that specific paint to remove it from the paint cup.
@@theartworkshop Green Stuff World chrome metal paint. It gives a mirror like look
@@acandnine12 sorry for the late reply! The medea airbrush cleaner works very well to remove dried paint. You can add some to the cup and let it soak for a few minutes. Then I'd use a stiff round brush to try to remove the dried paint. It's probably take some effort but you should be able to remove all of it.
Odd doesn't show me as member
I see you as one! You have the red logo next to your name on my screen here. Thanks so much for it my friend.
@@theartworkshop My account i had to recover it was jacked.. Thanks
Nice one Mark🫡. Btw i dont have a sharpening stone so i just used a 3000 grit sandpaper and it works super.
Thanks Allan! 3000 grit is perfecto. Might take a few passes with a high grit like that set the burr in the right direction, but I've had a lot of luck with sandpaper as well.
