Since today's guest was last on this program back in December, the world has continued to fracture geopolitically.
Where is that trend taking us? And what will the impact be on global prosperity?
The majority of folks who watch this Thoughtful Money channel are primarily from the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. So to provide a perspective from a non-Western point of view, I'm pleased to welcome Michael Every back onto the program.
Michael is Global Strategist at Rabobank, and joins us from Thailand.

    • @SunBattery
      @SunBattery Před měsícem

@@heldaneurbanus5135 The discussion is theoretical and the guest did not cover any of the specifics. The good advise is reserved for paying customers. Giving out dated/incomplete advise is worse than no advice at all. The changes that the guest says will happen in two decades have already taken place. BYD (EVs), CATL (batteries), Huawei (in key areas like Inverters..) have a two decade lead on their EU and US competitors, in high tech a 2 decade lead is insurmountable. The Rest have many of the essential resources for the new economy like Nickel and can shut out the other rest. The world is shifting to a post oil reality that could happen faster than most experts predict which would have big consequences on the petro-dollar. Japan is declining (demographics & economy) and will need to liquidate its treasury and Agency bonds and that would have an impact on interest rates, China holds more than $6.5 Trillion in US bonds and would have to liquidate in the near future (return of capital more important than return on capital). So many important points are not considered. The world is reverting back to a pre-1492 economy, so each block could live and prosper in complete isolation of the other, the west will need to learn to live peacefully with the rest w/o trying to impose its values.

Thank you for bringing Michael on! I'm a retired skilled tradesman in the US and I ended my career trying to teach young people a skill that would allow for them to provide a decent living for themselves and a family if that's their goal. The general public, politicians, academia and even my family look down on those that actually produce as "less than us". I find it highly amusing when they hire a plumber or an electrician and find out what it costs to prevent getting their hands dirty and maintain their lifestyle of arrogance.

I’m a retired baker. I am certified as a master and can formulate cakes, breads and rolls. You name it.
I always made good wages and was able to buy and pay for several homes
Also have a pilot rating and airplane…yet the white collar folk look down their nose at my way of living. They pay through the nose for their bachelor, masters degree and have nothing to show for it but thousands upon thousands of dollars in student loan debt.
I don’t get it. It’s more than foolish, it’s downright stupid.
The choices people make and not thinking about the long term effects of the choices made.
I to enrolled in college but was running out of money and did not want to take out student loans so I got a job at bakery. They liked my work and offered me an apprenticeship and I accepted.
It wasn’t long before I started to think that the university was a waste of time and money and so I decided to not enroll for the next year.
      I never regretted my decision.

But we used to make our own car parts, had our own saw Mills, and on and on. People were needed to make things before 90s. My mom was reading a newspaper on Stone Mountain park in GA I. Vacation in motor home, looked up at me, and said in August 1992, WE are in real trouble …Disney just took over US Steel on rankings in something. In my 1994 meeting held at MSU presented by some one from DC, showed slides that US was turning to a service industry, not manufacturing and with that lower wage and benefited jobs for our population. I was much younger in learning mode, but remember. Here we are.

It used to be that everyone bought Teslas, but now its Chinese BYD, Honqi, Mg etc.
They are ATLEAST 20 to 50 percent less than german EV s like VW, BMW, Mercedes etc, but those Chinese cars provide way more power and tech with quite good materials and their interior looks and even feels better in certain cars than their rival german cars.

surely they are cheaper(subisdising does the job!) .Do they have better quality? I doubt about.it.Wait couple of years more and do an update then( do not forget these are not smartphones) .I would never buy a chinese product due to mostly poor quality but also because i don't want to sponsorship the CCP(my money,my choice) .Exactly this is what the guest told about "the German way" : as long as you can do a buck more, you can be brother wit the devil it-self.My add on this: 100% this is the most easy way to preserve your well-being ( at least on short or even mid-term),but on long run you( or perhaps your children) are gone to pay the price ( nothign comes free!).Again, exactly this what the guest tried to explain when he described the globalization started in the 90's : be aware with whom you are doing bussines.

The European Union project was always going to be fraught with difficulties but at least 20 years ago it had a strong axis as demonstrated by Messrs Mitterand and Kohl .That cooperation no longer exists and F and G rarely sing form the same hymn sheet these days even if they pretend to. I foresee huge problems for the European Union moving forward.

Protectionism seems to set at the fulcrum of the economic seesaw, with merchantileism at one end, and globalization at the other. The happy medium therefore seems to be where countries engage in protectionist policies within limits and in so doing, providing a maximum benefit to each individual country.

The concept of the phrase invisible hand not actually used the Wealth of Nations, is that in each individual looking out for his best interest is best for the market.
Everyone can't be protectionist. You can have allies working together.
What you can't be like Art Laffer foolishly says,.. just have a complete free market where you trade with everyone. No you can't trade with or depend on enemies to produce for you.
The movie A beautiful Mind I believe said the Nash won the Nobel Prize for extending Adam Smith's
In the movie, Nash's eureka moment occurs while he is with his friends in a bar. Five girls enter the establishment and Nash and his friends start contemplating who will get the blonde.
Eventually the conversation turns to Adam Smith and one of his famous quotes, "In competition, individual ambition serves the common good."
"Everyman for himself, gentlemen" says one of Nash's friends.
And another adds, "and those who strike out are stuck with their friends."
Eventually the blonde looks over at Nash, and he joins the conversation, "Adam Smith needs revision." Nash goes on to state that no one should pursue the blonde since they will all "block each other and not a single one of us will get her. Then when we strike out, none of her friends will have us because no one likes to be second choice. But what if no one goes for the blonde? We don't get in each others way and we don't insult the other girls. That's the only way we win."
But his friend quickly adds, "If this is someway for you to get the blonde you can go to #%^*!"
"Adam Smith said that the best result comes from everyone in the group doing what is best for himself, right? That's what he said. Incomplete. OK, because the best result would come from everyone in the group doing what is best for himself and the group."

Sounds boring with the West against the Rest, but we have moved in that direction for a while. The US has fought many costly and unnecessary wars. The last one with Russia seems stupid to me. Was it really necessary to challenge Russia and ignore its security interests. The idea of de Gaulle and Gorbatjov of a common European house is more attractive to me than a new iron curtain raised by the West.

How would you like an alliance of Russia and Germany? What would combination of Russian resources and German technology do to the US's interests in the world? Do not take Germans for granted, there is certainly a fraction of elites that wants the US out of Europe. Actually, Russians have already thrown out the Americans from some African countries, if the Russo-German alliance forms you can expect the same happen in Latin America and Asia. And in isolation the US won't be able to repeat the success story of the 19th century, no chance. Good luck dealing with Russians and Germans, in addition to China in the Pacific

There's a lot of things to argue about here i personaly like geopolitic more than economic & market matters & i follow the former more than the latter
I believe globalism was a serious mistake that led as Michael says to our deindutrialisation & demanufacturing albeit it produced cheap goods & services for our populations the other huge mistakes was the way the US conducted its FP since the end of WW2 draging along the rest of the West it produced a lot of anger hatred & justified recrimination towards the US & its allies whilst at the same time deeply transforming our socio-cultural & religious fabrics in ways that have deeply fractured & divided our societies & destroyed our traditional values to the point that they're non existent now to the point that we stand for nothing but consumerism materialism
We also don't live in democraties anymore not in the traditional definition we had of that concept 40 years ago & more
When Michael says in relation to the protest about Palestine that we should instead all be americans or canadians for me i want to point out that recently a majority of politicians waved ukrainian flags at the House that Biden Blinken Austin & others spoke in favor of Israel at the expense of US interests Is that what being american is about ?
US FP has been described by many among wich former General Wesley Clarck as being in perpetual war & using its military to provoke Regime Changes many any others have said the same J Mersheimer J Sachs are among them
The situation in Israel results from decades of abuse against the palestinians going back to the Nakba in 1948 or even to the earlier "colonisation" by european american & canadians jews since the 1880s 140 years ago followed by the Balfour declaration in 1917 that said that the british gov was in favor of creating (arbitrarily) a home for the jews But what about the people that lived there already "the palestinians"
In Europe the consequences of the war in Ukraine are increasingly dividing the europeans that war didn't need to happen & it didn't happen because Russia suddenly decided to invade Ukraine on the spur of the moment
In 1991 the US & its NATO partners agreed with Gorbachev that if Russia decided to end the Warsaw Pact NATO wouldn't expand ONE INCH beyond East Germany, in 2014 the US brought down the elected ukrainian gov using neo nazis org the US State Dep CIA Chevron & Exxon had been financing for several years months before the elections & has been threatening since to include Ukraine into NATO after NATO had been expanding several times since 1991 notwithstanding the promess made by NATO in 1991
So what's the problem with Ukraine being a part of NATO ?
Why does it freaks out Russia what's the big deal you think ?
If Ukraine becomes part of NATO US military bases will be at Russia's door pointing US nuclear missiles to Russia 4-5 minutes from Moscow St-Petersburg Sebastopol & many other russian cities
Do you remember the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 do you remember how the US freaked out about russian missiles being installed in Cuba at the time ? Do you remember how close we came to a nuclear armageddon
The US chose to antagonise Russia wich brought it closer to China & the global REST it did'nt have to happen
The sanctions & destrucyion of the Nord tream pipelines (no doubts by the US as Seymour Hersh described has deindustrialized Germany & largely destroyed the rest of the EU economies wich in time will turn many countries against the US it will mark the end of the EU & NATO as we know it The US is causing its own fall & that of its allies
Do you realy believe the US has the brains to turn things around after its acting so stupidly so greedily for so many decades ? I don't !
The US elites & leaders are actualy dividing their own population in similar ways it's destroying Europe & has destroyed so many countries since the end of WW2 many of them based on lies & false flags
I,ll bet anytime on the guy that comes out of the gutter against the one that was raised with a silver spoon in a dog fight
The Global Rest has been living in the gutters & abused repeatedly by the US/West that were raised with a silver spoon

    "complicated" = RISK
the cost of money/credit (interest rates) will continue to reflect new structural risks... new/high levels of risk that we have not experienced in 80 years.
watch real rates creep ever-higher, regardless of CB policy/action.
99% of people (in the West) cannot grasp a "complicated" paradigm because neither they nor their bosses+parents have experienced anything remotely similar in their lifetime.

Why invest, stare at charts, and work all day, if at the end of the day and after taxes and inflation you're still left with a net loss in purchasing power? People have been so hyper focused on financials to provide a gain that they forgot to produce. This is why paper is returning to its intrinsic value, zero. Paper is no longer going to provide a real positive gain. The only thing that will provide a real gain in purchasing power henceforth, will be gold and producing things other people can consume...

I think I understand what you are saying. I do not disagree with you on a basic level, however, in my (unsolicited) opinion. The keys to moving forward is 1. recognizing the issues(which you have done.) 2. be a problem solver/producer. 3. Participate in current financial markets/realities to extract/maximize more fiat, to transfer to assets and locations which will benefit (protect) yourself and your family/community the best.

      @user-fl9hj9pg5f Před měsícem

@@thefireman2854 I don't claim to have anything figured out either, but I think it has something to do with a crisis in confidence and a move closer to a barter system wherever possible. People will fare better trading goods for services and vice versa, better than they would fare under the thumb of a beaurocracy. Eventually this will lead to the usage of gold and silver as money again. The road to personal and national sovereignty is paved with gold, but under the paving is always a barter system. Hence the push for protectionism and buying of gold by central banks. Kinda like how uranium and natural gas will be the bridge to a greener economy, barter followed by gold will be the bridge back toward economies that produce goods everyone can use.

His point on the current mercantile surplus nations doing worse is missing a crucial scenario: those countries can choose to redirect their existing surplus industrial capacity to weapons production and ignite an arms race. This will force a painful choice in the west to whether match that arms race at the same time when industrial capacity for consumer items will need to be built up as well as how to allocate resources between existing huge social spendings against this arms race. For example by redirecting the 4% GDP surplus, it would take China only a few short years to build thousands of nuclear weapons with delivery systems.

So when the united State of America was the world’s largest manufacturing nation they used gunboat diplomacy to force “free trade” now China has risen the United States cries foul and wants protectionism.
I hope all the blue collar workers put out of work in decades past in the USA remember that it was there own countries greedy corporations that off shored to China for profits, the wealthy don’t care about their “inferiors” and never have….and if it comes to war they send your “social inferiors” to die for “democracy” very 😔 sad.

Back to the future. The idea that politicians will ulimately made decisions on a large scale as to which industries or businesses will be protected will be disasterous. There will be no limits to the justifications for protection or subisidies, grants, handouts. Its bad enough now. The lack of competion will drive prices sky high. We have been there.
