  • The Battle of the Brits, who will win? Andertons and Peach Guitars are the biggest guitar stores in the UK and the boys battle it out over what store would they go to on their trip to England. Baxter also professes his love for Danish Pete and Jonathan decides what store has the best youtube demos!

      Addicted? I gotta Casino Guitars monkey-on-my-back the size of
      King Kong. I'm jonesing to spend quality-time (all f-n day) in a great
      guitar / music store with super staff that know a Jackson Dinky from an oriental brass chastity-belt have experience & like a chinwag the taking of the piss in general & a belly-laugh as well. Alas, no such mirage exists in Queensland.
      They are guitarded.
      I'm from Sydney NSW, where children & teenagers are actually professionally educated in schools, there' been a Pol-Air chopper wing since 1978 and we've known fluoride stops tooth-decay since forever.
      Well, apart from the bleeding obvious, the guitar stores in Queensland suck with expressions dead-pan dead aardvark's trouser-snakes, look at ya like you've done something wrong, and carry-on like usual. They are abysmal.
      They without fail collectively & individually, are all over-priced under-stocked
      high-pressure theifdoms haunted by guitarded randoms wearing Staff branded
      shirts tailored from that dirt-cheap un-breathable stifling highly inflammable
      infernally-hot polyester-blend who hover like dunny-budgies 'round a dropped pie,
      their breath reeks like cask-wine & sewage, and they know about guitars roughly
      half of 3/16th's of f-all. Let alone a working-knowledge of music; history performance theory composition tranposition production instruments recording; or any required associated regalia.
      This musicologist of 42yrs & guitarcheologist is confronted by, accosted by, forced to deal with being 'served', more like enraged insulted & shat-to-tears,
      by failed mechanics, ex-veterinary nurses, aquarists, carpet-cleaners & pest removers.
      Not one of whom can tell a P90 from a paradiddle, a truss-rod from T-Rex,
      a f-ing Duesenberg from Django f-in Rheinhart, just shoot me...
      I'd rather do cartwheels to an Oodnadatta tattooist, drunk as a skunk, in only
      a pink leotard 4-sizes too small with the crotch cut out of 'em with 6 bluebottles wrapped 3-times 'round me balls to get 'I Shag Pauline Hanson' inked across my forehead, and catch Priscilla Queen of the Desert the bus, back, than be seen in any Queensland 'guitar' store again, at least before I'm dead.
      The standard of guitar / music stores shops in the US Canada UK & EU,
      even Melbourne & Sydney my home-city sh*t all over the brothels up here.
      These guitar stores in the UK, your wonderful arty gentrified ex-Casino guitar store in picturesque Southern Pines, they set a f-in example.
      Not to mention, the key ingredient along with location location location, is very knowledgeable amiable funny as f-k muso's & or ex-muso's for staff = which are essential for any successful guitar store on Earth, exception Queensland Aust.
      Fair-dinkum, I visit real guitar stores in the big-smoke 2,000kms in the fourby to
      The Guitar Factory or 1 of the dozen great guitar/music stores in Sydney,
      then 2-thousand kay's back to the Station, it's worth every micro-slip.

    There is another amazing guitar shop in the UK called Guitar Village in a town called Farnham. They don’t have much of a social media presence at all, but they are one of the best guitar shops I know, and I live 30 mins from Andertons! Guitar Village is an amazing place with one of the best guitar selections I’ve ever seen. I’ve bought several guitars from them rather than Andertons. I’ve ended up buying amps and pedals from Andertons. Nothing against Andertons, they’re amazing, but buying from GV always seems to be a bit more personal.

Would love to buy a Xotic guitar from Peach since they're the only UK dealer but they're also way over in the opposite corner of the country from me unfortunately. And yes - Jack is an awesome player - I've often stuck on a playlist of him playing all Custom Shop's for example - to get a flavour of which one sounds best. Jack's my go-to - didn't know he had his own channel though - thanks!

    I'm an American living in London, about five minutes from Denmark St. LOVE Andertons! Smaller shop then I expected it to be, always crowded, but still GREAT customer service every time I've gone. As opposed to Guitar Center, where you could spend an eternity waiting for someone to help you, and then trying to sell you something you don't want when they don't have the thing you went in there for.

  • @sensesworkingovertime

    Andertons is my local guitar shop. I have bought lots of guitars, basses, amps & kit off them over the years. I can't believe how big they have become now but I also think their customer service is way better now than it was in the 90s.

      Rob Nicoll same with me on all counts. There’s no bad option here anyway - Andertons customer service has always been fantastic, very fast and super friendly. Their stock is out of this world and naturally the YT Channel is peerless. Plus all the guys in the channel are just fab, every one. But equally, Peach is an exceptional guitar store. Some of their gear is super high-end and the set-up quality and customer service equally fantastic. It’s brilliant there’s a market for both stores and both deserve their success 100%. GAK have been good for me too but tbh I don’t know them quite so well so can’t comment. I’m sure they’re great too. We have brilliant guitar stores here in the UK.

    As someone who lives 11 miles away from Andertons I can vouch that the customer service has always been decent and the shop is a good place to go to.
    However, Peach customer service is on another level, their pricing is usually more competitive and the guitars I have bought from them always come set up really well.
    Ask Peach for a discount and they usually have some movement. Ask Andertons for a discount and the best I've had is "we can give you some credits on your account."
    Nothing against Andertons, but I'll shop with Peach almost every time nowadays.

    I've shopped at Peach several times. It's a great shop, really big for UK standards, with an incredible selection of high end electric and acoustic guitars. The staff are really friendly. I've not been to Andertons as it's a bit of a trek, and ultimately Peach will have what I want and they are only a 30 minute drive for me. Now, if I was a tourist? I'd visit Peach. Colchester is a very historic town, being an old Roman town. It has a Castle, Roman Wall, ruins of an Abbey (blame Henry VIII for that) and some great pubs and restaurants. Also, if you're a petrol head, there's a very impressive Ferrari/Porsche/Bentley dealership round the corner from the store. I love the Andertons videos and also the Peach ones. What impresses me about Jack, is he never plays the same thing twice, that's not easy to do. Other CZcamsrs (who will remain nameless) have some stock licks that you know are going to be played at some point in every video :)

    Andertons is smaller in store than its CZcams /internet sales footprint would suggest. Nice stock, but small. Not anything like the online inventory, although if you were local you could whistle it up from their warehouse I guess. The online guys had no presence in the store when I visited from overseas. Service was friendly, but their policy on credit cards literally vetoed my (expensive) purchase. I ended up cancelling the online purchase they required and went local upon returning home. No such problem when I visited the guitar precinct in Ochanomizu in Tokyo. If you want an onsite amazing range you should look into that; 10+ shops on one block, multiple stories, everything you can imagine.

    Denmark Street used to be the Mecca of guitars in London, but redevelopment coupled with bad customer support (all too busy noodling) with a lot of shops with no visible pricing and dusty shops has killed the area.
    The larger shops outside central London have now taken over. I use GuitarGuitar in Epsom which is about an hour away, but has lots of left handed guitars and very helpful staff.

    Peach wins hands down, visited Andertons once, the shop was a disappointment, soulless, not the same feeling as watching the videos, Peach is probably the best shop I've been to in the UK, if you visited both you'd probably agree, another shop I really like, although a lot smaller is Guitar Village in Surrey, set inside two very old cottages in a lovely village.

    Both are "BRILLIANT" shops and I have bought extensively from both ... but if like me you have to drive 1.5 hours to Andertons or 2.5 Hours to Peach (I'm based in Oxfordshire) the first thing you want to do is have easy parking and Andertons is hopeless on the parking issue and often the area gets patrolled by traffic wardens, there are car parks in Guildford but it's a tidy return walk if you purchase something on the weighty or bulky side. Andertons offers the bigger musical instrument picture but if you want to buy that lesser known boutique pedal or amp then (for me) it's going to be Peach but if on the other-hand you want a hard disk recording system or a keyboard then Andertons are the choice. I recently bought a Two Rock combo from Peach (Dean ... you were terrific, thank you for your time my friend) I even met Jack who is such a great guy (what a player too) and I've also met Danish Pete who is just the same bubbly person off camera as what we see with the Captain when on camera (Pete if you are reading this and for your recognition of the conversation we had ... I wanted to chop your hands off and swap then for mine, what a fantastic guy ... ohhh and what a player too!) - So there's my brief take on it and isn't it nice for a change that the UK has something good about it ... ha ha ... take care & keep playing guys.

    This coming from a UK resident. When it comes to You Tube content Andertons are the clear giant. I used to live within an hour of their store and back in the late seventies and eighties bought a few amps and recording gear from them, and would often take a pilgrimage on a Saturday to the Guildford shop (they had more then one back then) just to look at the gear. It was by far the best store around and if I didn't live 300 miles away I would still be going there. I do buy online from them and the service is slick and efficient.

    I have a friend in the UK that buys from Andertons regularly. On a couple trips over we made the trek from Heathrow to Andertons. I’ve left with branded t-shirts, guitar picks, and a coffee mug that I actually think belonged to someone on the staff. Speaking of the staff, they were fantastic; my friend picked up bass pedals and they were super helpful. On one trip, they even setup a bass that I brought him, for free, while we shopped.
    I need to make it out to see you guys, but its just too hot right now

    The guitar shop you really want to visit in London is Charlie Chandlers Guitar Experience in Hampton Wick. Very small, only sells used guitars, Chalie is like the godfather of guitar repairs. They PLEK, they have great knowledge, old guitars are just more interesting than all the new stuff too. Just a cool shop.

    Big fan of Andertons here! Have spent a crazy amount of money in there over the years. The customer service is second to none - the staff actually cater to your needs rather than product push. There's been quite a few occasions where I've been advised not to buy something, as it wasn't the right fit for me. I've also returned one or two things, and they've always been happy to do so with no complaints.
    Denmark Street - which is the big mecca for guitar shops in central London has really gone down hill over the past few years, and it's no wonder they're struggling to compete with the likes of Andertons, GAK, Guitar Guitar, etc. There's normally a really uncomfortable atmosphere, and salespeople push you into buying gear - I get it, they want to make a profit, but you can't help being put off!
    There's also an issue with price in the Denmark Street stores. You almost always have to negotiate on price to make sure you're not being ripped off. However with Andertons the price is normally the best price online (or near enough).

    I’ve been going to Anderton’s since I was a teenager. As a store it isn’t massive and none of the people from the videos work the floor (although the Captain did brush past me once whilst I was browsing). However the selection is decent and the people who work there are very friendly and approachable, which is a big deal as most other music shops in the Surrey/Hampshire area tend be stuck up boutique places with pushy salespeople. Great place overall and I’ve never had a bad purchase from there.

Their warehouse isn't in the same building, So if you are looking for something that's on their website but not in the store you have to wait about an hour for them to bring it over to you. But like you said, each time you turn a corner you see a new room with more music equipment. I've never heard of Peaches before but the photos look great so I might take a drive up sometime.

Peach has the BIGGEST store I’ve ever been in and with the best S type guitars in the country however in Andertons you can literally pick up ANY guitar straight from the rack and plug it in at a booth without even having to ask staff. They are so chilled there is unreal. I drive 2 hours just to go to Andertons to buy gear. They're both great! They make you feel like home, I haven't been but from what I read from people going there and from what I can tell from watching 99% of their videos, I know it would be a great experience to visit them. I was born and raised in Macedonia, never had a local shop.. now I live and study in Innsbruck Austria where there's a local shop nearby. The thing is that cause of watching Andertons, I thought all family owned local shops are friendly and nice..So I went in, all excited and was greated with a bored staredown from the owner, no great no nothing, all cold, walked around for a couple of minutes, didn't feel comfortable to grab a guitar and try it.. anyways, I grabbed a pack of strings, paid, again no salutation whatsoever and I left, fast forward to a year and a half after learning quite a bit of german, I decided to contact the shop and ask them in a very polite and professional manner if they had a job opening by any chance since my goal is to always be around a guitar, and all I got from them was a Histerically Laughing emoji as a reaction on my message... After that, I started playing as much as I can and decided to open up a CZcams Channel, build up an amazing community where everyone feels like they belong! Basically they single handedly destroyed the image I had about local family owned shops.. sorry for the rant, stay safe everybody!

    Having been to neither, I've bought 2 great semi-acoustics from Andertons online. However Peach have many different, less well known boutique guitar manufacturers. Whilst Andertons cover nearly all production line guitars, Peach have an amazing selection of custom shop guitars, especially from Fender & Gibson. They both have amazing CZcams channels also. However, Britain does have a large (actually enormous) guitar chain called GuitarGuitar, you really should check them out! Another excellent one for Fender guitars is Project Music, who are based in Exeter. So if you get bored looking at guitars you can always wander round a beautiful cathedral city or take a short drive out to Dartmoor! Finally there's a great little guitar shop in Surrey called Guitar Village, they have all the usual production guitars but also some amazing, high-end custom shop guitars as well. I'm sure there are plenty more, but out of these which one would I go to? All of them!

    I've been to both many times. I'm lucky to be friends with Pete and he is genuinely the nicest guy ever and such a fun dude to hang out with. Andertons videos are so entertaining and a joy to watch. That said, the peach store is insane. It's just huge and it's like being a kid in a candy store (sweet shop for us Brits). Peach has a bigger range and stock more boutique brands like two rock. Although they have the main hall they also have 4 or 5 acoustic rooms and then a separate area full of custom shops and masterbuilts. Jack is an amazingly versatile player for Peach but the videos can be a bit dry. Also Peach can be quite expensive. I recommend Coda Music- they have a great selection of masterbuilt strats so go check them out too.

    • @davidburke2132
      @davidburke2132 Před 4 lety +1

      I’d second the Coda comment. It is such a crazy rabbit-warren tiny (related to the stock they jam in there) shop though and whenever I buy from them I’m super careful to check every inch of the guitar for any damage caused by knocks etc. as a result of the super cramped nature of the store. Maybe that’s unfair, but if you’ve ever visited the place you’d understand why this might become a perception. In fact the owner once told me that this is the reason he often doesn’t put the NOS Custom Shop Fenders on display at all, whereas it doesn’t matter as much for the already Relic’s versions of course! I’ll always love Coda though... they were the place I bought my first Gibson Les Paul from in the late 1990s... a guitar I still proudly own to this day. 😃

    I’ve been to both of them many times (because I live in England and I’m obsessed with guitars! 😝). In summary:
    - the Peach shop is massively more impressive (it’s in an out of town industrial unit location, which may sound sterile, but they’ve built it out inside beautifully and it has so much space and so much stock, etc.). Nothing against Anderton’s, it’s also a great physical shop but it’s grown in situ, is more space limited and just doesn’t have the room or space to display stock (hence why they have a large off-location warehouse nearby) and Peach have just taken the guitar shop concept to a different level in the UK. For those of you who have been to Chicago Music Exchange whilst the location and layout are different at Peach there are many similarities, and CME is by far the best music store I’ve been to in the States (sorry Casino guys! 😉). A couple of the UK music store chains, GuitarGuitar and Professional Music Technology (think of these as the UK equivalents of Guitar Center but a lot better than your typical GC store) have shops as large or larger than Peach but they’re not as well laid out or as good for demoing instruments;
    - if you’re in the market for high end guitars and gear I’d recommend Peach. They typically seem to have bigger stocks of Custom Shop Gibson, Custom Shop Fender, PRS, Knaggs, Suhr, Collings, Nik Huber, etc. than Anderton’s. I’d say this is in general (meaning in comparison to what Anderton’s have in stock both at the store and the warehouse - items which can be brought to the store for you within an hour max though if you do want to try them) but it’s certainly the case that Peach hold much more high end stock at their store location than Anderton’s does at their store location;
    - Anderton’s have typically better selections in stock of mid and especially lower price range instruments. Here I’m even talking about US production Fenders like American Pro, American Performer and the lower end of Gibson USA, where Anderton’s typically has you better covered as far as selection is concerned;
    - I’d also say that Anderton’s has a wider range of effects pedals in stock than Peach. They have a really impressive and consistently well stocked main effects pedal display case (better than anything I’ve seen in any guitar store, including the display at CME) and a couple of secondary display cases too;
    - overall I’d say the breadth and range of stock, especially across all price ranges, and by brand, is greater at Anderton’s;
    - both stores have really helpful and knowledgeable staff. I would say that I’ve got to meet in store and have a long chat with the owner of Peach but I’ve never met the Captain!! Booooo!! 😛 However, Lee is a much bigger CZcams personality than John so I can understand him keeping a generally lower profile in his store than John does in order to avoid getting mobbed and crazy demands for selfies! 😝; and
    - regarding the channels I’d say that Anderton’s has the better presenters. They seem more natural in front of the cameras by this stage and they’re funnier and more entertaining (probably as a result of that additional comfort). As far as players are concerned I’d say Jack is every bit up there with Danish Pete... his technique, range of styles and taste and feel are excellent. What I would say is that as far as demos are concerned neither channel would probably be my first choice to really hear what a piece of gear sounds like. This is particularly true for effects where I’d put That Pedal Show, Andy Demos (or Andy on Reverb), or Pedal Zone streets ahead of either Anderton’s or Peach in the way they demo features and available sounds. In fact, for me when the Captain demos effects pedals it always seems to degenerate into random knob-twiddling with no concept of what he’s trying to achieve, he never leaves the effect on any one setting long enough to get a true idea of what it sounds like, and he often seems to me to be insufficiently gemmed-up on the features of the pedal he’s trying to demo (I wouldn’t say this is the case when he demos guitars and amps and maybe it’s his own preference for minimal pedals and guitar straight into an amp subconsciously coming across in his attitude to pedal demos, which is a bit weird given my comment about the size of Anderton’s effects pedal inventory).
