Why I'm not growing garlic in my raised beds | in containers instead

  • This year I'm not growing garlic in my raised beds, I'm growing them in pots (or containers). I was so disappointed last year after a really wet spring ruined my garlic crops. So this year I'm making sure there is a lot of drainages and no chance that the weather can ruin things. So come grow along with me and I'll show you how easy it is to grow garlic.

I think I would use sandy soil for garlic in your area. There are 2 good reasons I love my sandy soil-no slugs and no chance of rotting. This year I ordered a variety pack and think they are all hardneck. If they don’t keep well I will dehydrate most and maybe some diced. I can then powder the dry batch. Good thing it’s nice out when we harvest so we can dehydrate outside☺️
I hope I didn’t plant too soon as we are having Indian summer after a week of freezing and I noticed a couple were up already. I threw some old hay we had on them in hopes no more pop up. Some varieties were starting to sprout when they arrived and I only planted a couple inches deep. Oh well, I’m sure I will end up with enough to replant next year so I don’t have to buy them again as they are expensive.

Our garden club had a garlic expert as our speaker at our last meeting. He said if you're growing in a pot, he recommends a deeper one (12-18 inches). We had a ton of rain last year as well, and my garlic did well in raised beds, I think because they're raised off the ground so the drainage is excellent. He plants as late as possible to avoid getting any green showing before winter as frost damage on the plant will seriously reduce production. In a year where a very cold or wet year is expected, he plants in early spring instead of late fall. (We're in Vancouver BC Canada; lots of winter rain; it doesn't usually snow, but we sometimes get a freeze and a little snow that lasts a week). And he says any small cloves he doesn't plant, he uses for cooking.
