How to Convert MBR to GPT Without Losing Data or Reinstalling OS With Fix for Validation Failures

This method will allow you to switch firmware from Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) to Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI).
UEFI mode has many advantages over Legacy mode, such as secure boot, faster startup, bypassing MBR disk limit of a 2 Terabytes as maximum disk size with four primary partitions as maximum numbers, in addition, UEFI will allow you updating to or installing windows 11 in your computer.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
Before attempting to convert the disk to GPT, make sure that your computer supports UEFI because the conversion process can’t be reversed back without losing data.
Once the disk gets converted to GPT disk scheme, the BIOS firmware must be reconfigured to boot in UEFI mode.
Windows Recovery Environment should be enabled, so you can recover your system if you advanced into a trouble.
FIRST: How to check if your computer supports UEFI:
The List of hot keys to enter Boot Menu for different brands including laptops and desktops:
- Acer: F12, F9 or Esc.
- Asus: Esc. or F8
- Compaq: F9 or Esc.
- Dell: F12
- Fujitsu: F12
- Hp: Esc. or F9
- Lenovo: F12, F8, F10, Novo Button or Fn+F11
- MSI: F11
- Razer Blade: F12
- Samsung: F12 or F2
- Sony: Assist Button, Esc or F11
- Toshiba: F12
SECOND: How to check if your disk has a GPT or MBR:
THIRD: how to convert the disk into GPT:
Type CMD into search box
Right click on Command prompt and select, Run as administrator
Execute this command to convert the disk into GPT:
MBR2GPT /CONVERT /ALLOWFULLOS
If you are trying that from Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) or preinstallation environments, you have to change the CMD path to System32 folder using this command:
CD /D D:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
Then execute the command without /ALLOWFULLOS option
Otherwise, the command will fail with this error message
MBR2GPT is Not Recognized as internal or external command.
If the conversion failed with this or another error message, “Disk layout validation failed for disk 0” then you have to check the followings:
The disk is currently having an MBR scheme
The Bitlocker is disabled on the disk.
There are no more than 3 primary partitions on the disk with at least 1-megabyte free space in all partitions
There is no any extended or logical partition on the disk
The system partition is set as active and contains valid BCD file
Execute LIST VOL to show available volumes
Select windows volume using this command:
SEL VOL 2
Type LIST PART then press Enter to show available partitions
Select the partition to be deleted using this command:
SEL PART 4
Delete the selected partition using this command:
DELETE PARTITION
Execute EXIT command to close the DISKPART
Press up arrow key from keyboard to explore previous commands, then execute MBR2GPT again to start conversion.
The conversion process completed successfully after removing the fourth partition, but failed to update the reagent.xml file with suggestion to manually disable and enable WinRE.
Now power off the computer to change BIOS settings.
FOURTH: How to change settings of BIOS firmware to boot in UEFI mode:
Power on the PC then Boot into BIOS menu as seen in first part of the video.
Navigate to Boot option and change Boot mode to UEFI.
Unlike the disk ordering in the boot list of MBR or legacy scheme, the GPT scheme has a new boot option called Windows Boot Manager.
You may need to change the SATA Controller mode to AHCI.
Navigate to Exit panel and click on Exit Saving Changes option to boot into windows.
The first boot will take longer time, so be patient.
To show deleted partition, right click on Start icon then select, Disk management.
Right click on Unallocated space and select, New Simple Volume option.
Change the Size of new Volume if you want, otherwise, click next to take all available size.
Change the assigned letter if you want, otherwise click on Next to continue.
Move the files and folders back to the new volume.

This video was a life saver. Finallly since Windows 11 came out, my computer is ready for it! Before… mbr2gpt wouldn't make the conversion of my system disk and it turns out because of an extra partition. With the help of the video i could delete it and convert my system disk to gpt.

I just keep getting 'cannot find os partition(s) for disk 0 mbr2gpt'
MB is AS rock B450 Pro 4 with update to UEFI....(on starting PC it has always given option to press F2 to enter UEFI settings)

No lol. I converted my disk from MBR to GPT using Command prompt including system disk.
You guys are jealous no one buys your software, so stop commenting on CZcams saying aomei is best
So I converted the disk and plan to move the os to ssd so I can boot from it and save other data on hdd, I cloned successfully with partition assistant.
But delete partiton will cause data loss, ao mei partition will not cause data loss while converting.
I checked all 4 possible issues and everything is okay. Still getting the error :)

I only have 2 partitions in my disk and cannot get mbr2gpt to convert or even validate.
At this point I know my system is using BIOS legacy mode and has UEFI and secure boot available but do not want to start over from scratch with a fresh UEFI Windows install. This is such a pain.

You may not need to convert another disk that is not containing windows. However, if you can do that, you will loss all data inside that disk.

It does not ruin your PC. If your computer is not booting, it means EFI partion files are not created.
For me also my computer failed to boot, but after I install EFI partition it worked. Try search on CZcams for this
there is 250mb unallocated logical partition that is becoming primary when i try to create. i think it is not allowing to convert mbr to gpt.
i had converted mbr to gpt long ago but few days ago i changed it back to mbr but due to some limitation to mbr i am trying to convert back to gpt. but this partition is not allowing me to convert. i am using minitool partition wizard to modifying partitions.
So try the method from the video instead of using the mentioned tool.
I GET THE FOLLOWING ERROR - ValidateLayout: Dynamic volumes/Storage spaces are not supported.
Because your disk has a dynamic volume, so you can't convert without losing data.

So I find that it's easier to convert with Aomei partition assistant not mbr2gpt and diskpart.

If anyone is getting the "Cannot create EFI system partition" error, try the "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" command. That fixed it for me.
I was also getting the "Cannot find room for the EFI system partition" error. After trying to shrink my C:\ drive in Disk Management, I've noticed that it can only be shrunk by 14MB. I then used MiniTool Partition Wizard to transfer 2GB from my D:\ drive to my C:\ drive, and that fixed the error.

Move large files from the C to the D or to external storage (USB or Hard Disk), after that, convert the C into GPT.
The files inside the D partition will not be lost if you have followed the video correctly.

Make sure you have assigned a letter to all partitions if you are trying from Advanced Recovery.

You can't delete recovery partition, as you can't complete the conversion steps without it.
Instead, you can delete the storage partition if you have, or you can delete the System partition (100mb) if you have a separated partition, but you should boot into recovery environment in order to delete the System partition.

I recently uninstalled my old hdd from the pc (doesn't contain windows in it)
And my pc doesn't want to show windows manager on my m.2 that has windows on it i can't boot into windows anymore with that ssd
I tried to install another m.2 with windows on it and it works just fine
I was using my pc normally until I removed that hard drive

But MBR2GPT wipes your entire drive, reformats it, so regardless you'd need to reinstall your operating system, I don't think I can risk this
Converting the disk scheme from MBR to GPT using MBR2GPT will not wipe anything.

After changing Bios I save and exit so the computer restarts as it should but instead of windows starting normally, it shows an image called "Boot Menu" and that's where I'm stuck. Every time I click on any of the boot option displayed under that Boot Menu nothing happens I just end up right back there on that boot menu.

If this happen after successful conversion of the disk to GPT, you have to change BIOS settings to UEFI as instructed on the video.

What if your new computer does not have legacy mode in the Bios and your old computer backup is MBR?
Convert the MBR disk to GBT in another computer and then connect it to your new computer.

I don't know if you can retrieve your files or not, but you may need to consult a third party apps providers, such as Wondershare Data recovery or Easus Data recovery if they can recover your data.
So, don't try to do anything to the Unallocated Space (such as creating new partition or FORMATTING) until you get the final answer form the assistance of the mentioned companies.

What does it mean when it says cannot find OS partition for disk 0
Did you have more than one disk installed on your computer? If yes, your windows may be installed on the second disk, which will take the number "1" on the disks list instead of "0"
In this case, try the following command:
mbr2gpt /convert /DISK:1 /allowfullos
You may try to execute the following command and then try again:
BCDBOOT C:\WINDOWS

I followed your tutorial and converted mbr to gpt partition on my hp g6 laptop.Conversation was successful, i manually enable secured boot and when restarting my laptop it failed to boot up showing error message no boot device found, please install an os on the hard disk .I am stuck so help me?
You have to change Boot mode to UEFI and to select Windows boot manager as the first boot device.
Add a photo for your Boot settings and upload it to drive.google.com

Could you please help me out here. I get an error while I tried to Format the current OS which is Win 10. By mistakenly, I have deleted the partition of C where win lays and other 2 partition got data. Now am stuck and tried to troubleshoot with my capacity. it turns out to be negative. non of them worked. I tried All BIOS things legacy mode and tried even making a new bootable USB too. Yes, you can reinstall windows 10 or even windows 11 without losing your data on D and F partitions. just create a bootable USB that is applicable to your Disk scheme and reinstall windows to C partition.

If your Windows files still present and intact, then you can rebuild the BCD to fix your issue.
Can I delete that system reserved "D" drive which was automatically created while GPT conversion??
The System Reserved partition is already available before conversion but without letter, so it is not shown. After conversion, the System Reserved partition take a letter, hence it is appear in the partitions list. it's size about 100 mb.
So you can delete or keep it if you want.

I have two OS installed in one drive with two separate partitions what should i do
Convert the partition in which you are booting windows from, and the other partition will be concerted directly. But if you have 4 partitions or more, you will fail to do that until you remove one partition.

That may result from corrupted battery, charger or charging port in your computer.
