    Summer dry fly fishing simply isn't complete without a few mind-blowing grasshopper days! In this video we travel to a brown trout river and focus on targeting big brown trout sitting on the edge of the river feeding on big grasshoppers. We use big grasshopper dry fly patterns as we take on sighting and hunting these big brown trout.

    You guys are amazing. Seriously, tying up flies and shaking my head watching your content. It's like grad school again, but for fly fishing. I rewind repeatedly to think through what you say. I'm more of a tight-line euro guy myself but there is a ton to learn about playing big browns here, raising my odds with the net. Decades of wisdom.

    When my son was 5 or 6 yrs old and starting to want to fish I would set him the task of catching live grasshoppers while I fly fished with artificial ones he would take quite a while then when he got one and brought it too me I would put it on a hook so he could cast it out on a bubble float. He would usually get a trout straight away, he still fly fishes but now with artificial 35 yrs have passed, his daughter now also fishes with him.

    Love how you always take us on a mini-adventure, and Amelia’s big rainbow and Dave’s last brown were SO beautiful. I don’t get keeping the reel right handed and switching back & forth during the fight, but to each their own ;). You land plenty!

      Not a right or wrong thing to me, just ‘different’. I grew up spin fishing, and always felt comfortable fighting with my right hand (dominant) and reeling lefty…carried over to fly fishing. But then again I skateboard goofy-foot and play hockey lefty. So who the heck knows.

    Watching this video highlights a new large grasshopper/locust that has appeared on a north canterbury river we fish. I first noticed them about five years ago never seen them before in all our time fishing the area. they've migrated up stream and are appearing right into the foothills. In flight they look like a small bird, maybe in years to come we too, will have epic hopper fishing who knows? meanwhile thanks for another great video.

      @jensenflyfishing  Před rokem

      great to hear you enjoyed this one - a lot of fun :) There's a new rod in the works and we've been field testing it the past year or so. It has a few markings on it but these certainly don't have the market version. Dave's been pretty much using this rod exclusively since we got it a year ago. :)

    • @phioshin
      @phioshin Před rokem +1

      ha! I guessed it!😄 because I couldn't find any model with that graphic... Do you think the Helios 3/blackout will remain top of the range? Let me explain: I have to get a rod, I wanted to know if it was better for me to take a helios 3f directly or wait... I don't know what range that rod occupies, but I've always had a great time with the helios 3f! I wouldn't want to take a rod that becomes "outdated" after two weeks...Just to know, because then, every fisherman establishes a special relationship with his rod, whether it cost €1000 or €300, it doesn't change; the important thing is how you feel that rod, because we are all different! 😊
      As always, beautiful video, and thanks for the precious advice ... One day I too will fish in those beautiful waters .. For now, however, I have all of Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia to visit .. I recommend the Neretva basin, in Bosnia It's the coldest river in the world, it's really beautiful, with huge brown trouts and grayling... Paradise..🤩

    • @jensenflyfishing
      @jensenflyfishing  Před rokem

      @@phioshin I don't think I'd worry about this or that rod on the market. The one you connect with is your rod, truly. I loved the H3 but now that I've had this other rod in hand a year it's more my rod. Technology advances in time but for some that's not always better as sometimes physical weight and slowing of action is actually more enjoyable. So really it is what you connect with that matters! 😊🍻

By sharing and showing fish behaviour and where they are located in relation to structure you can then envision where the fish will be in relation to structure on your waters. Not sure we'll ever change because it's incredibly fun and interesting to film.
