  • Start to finish work on updating a Volvo Penta 270/280 outdrive including changing gears and a number of other upgrades.
    Part-1, we show some basics about the Volva Penta including breaking the outdrive down into it's three basic pieces. Being this is a saltwater girl it's not as easy as it sounds.
    ***Correction -- The outdrive's new gear ratio for the project is 1.36 to 1

      Volvo's, at least the older ones are not as hard as they look. Take your time and have a manual any numbers you may need and you should be all set. Good luck.

    I have a 270 outdrive that has a shaft that is rusted on to the bell housing shaft. In your video the shaft that is directly in front of ujoint about 3 inches long is the part of the shaft that is rusted on shaft that extends out from bell housing. Any ideas to get off? Maybe heat?

    • @finscreenname
      @finscreenname  Před 4 lety +1

      Is the drive still stuck to it also or were you able to get it off and it's just the spline joint (3" long thing)? Is the bell out of the boat? All depends on the attack. First I would mix up some acetone and transmission fluid (1/2 and 1/2), get it past the bellhousing seal and squirt it inside to see if that would help. Also I would tap on it (spline joint) side to side a little to see if I could get it to rock on the shaft a tiny bit each way. Last I would use heat and if so I would plan on replacing the seals in the bellhousing.

    i have a bayliner capri that has a vovlo penta 280 outdrive, it hasnr seen the water in several years, I got it running and took it out, put it on trailer and a grey greasy oil started to come out of the ujoint boot, I assume I have a leaking seal somewhere between the 3 halfs as you shown us, is there a reseal kit for these outdrives? thanks for the videos, great job!

    I have a volvo penta 275 i think you didn’t show how to take the prop off probably because it’s easy... but im trying to take my off already took the cone and the washer off and im just not sure if my prop its seized or i have to take something else?

    • @finscreenname
      @finscreenname  Před 3 lety

      If you removed the cone (off the shaft threads) and the cone locking ring, the prop comes next. I would suggest you soak it for a day or two with something penetrating (acetone and tranny fluid 50/50 works well) and you will probably need a prop puller (sorry). DO NOT EVER HIT THE PROP SHAFT WITH ANYTHING or you will never get the prop cone back on. 😊

      @@finscreenname okay thanks I just wasn’t sure if I was missing something else... im thinking of getting a 3 jaw puller with some ropes attached to the prop... do who recommend any specific prop puller tool?

    • @finscreenname
      @finscreenname  Před 3 lety

      @@Ericrp119tube No recommendations being I've had to make a few homemade gadgets to get props off myself that included a 3 jaw puller. As I said though be real careful of the prop shaft. Nothing like getting everything fixed and then find you cant get the prop nut back on. There should be an indent in the end of the prop shaft so puller wont slip off the end of the shaft but no banging. Good luck!!

    I'm trying to move the helmet back on my AQ 270, so I can service the drive bellows. Do I just loosen the bolt with the big 10 mm allen bolt on the aft middle of the helmet? It's turning, but it doesn't seem to be coming out, and I'm afraid I'm going to strip out the head because of the difficulty. Thanks for the videos man, they're I opening.

    • @finscreenname
      @finscreenname  Před 8 lety

      The housing is made of aluminum. For the bolt hole they usually use a Helicoil in the hole for steel on steel threads. Sounds like yours is spinning around inside. Try slipping a flat head screwdriver between the helmet and the drive and see if can stop it. Cross your fingers.

      @@finscreenname Thanks Fin. I just had my stern drive serviced. its a 275 and they put gear oil in it. this is bad right.

    • @finscreenname
      @finscreenname  Před 5 lety

      I'm not going to say it's bad but it's not good. I mean it is gear oil but it's to heavy for the oil slinger in the bottom of the drive to sling the oil to the top of the drive like it should. There is no oil pump in the drive so if the slinger cant do it, it wont go to the top. Also being heavy it holds more heat and for a longer time and also adds unnecessary drag in the drive making it work harder through the heavier oil. Would I panic over it, no. Would I want it in there, no.
      Last, old Volvo used to use the Kiss method. Using engine oil in the drive kept it simple.

      @@finscreenname I've since learned the top bearing is out of my drive. Now you would think these boat shops around here would know better. I know of two boat shops that have serviced this drive before I owned the boat, and they both used gear oil. Crooks.... but what to do about the 100's or 1000's of other boats they serviced. wow eh..

    Whats the diferencia between Volvo 275 vs 270 or 280?

    • @finscreenname
      @finscreenname  Před 3 lety

      Mostly just case shape (exhaust outlet). Most of the internals depend on what year it was made not so much what series. As an example, a 1983 Volvo 270 may have all the same parts inside as the 1983 280 did. No reason to make the same vertical shaft in two different thicknesses just for the 270 and the 280. I actually use a Volvo 280T transom shield and a Volvo 270 Drive because I like the slimmer shape case and it uses lower gears out of a Volvo 250 but I guess you saw that in the videos.
