  • It's the interview everyone's been waiting for - we catch up with our lifelong friend, Sir Tony Robinson, Time Team's presenter of 20 series and countless specials. While Tony is taking a step back from his presenting role, Time Team is in his blood and we're delighted announce Tony as our Honorary Patron and 'chief superfan'!
Tony told us: "I was delighted to hear about the plans for the next chapter in Time Team’s story. It’s an opportunity to find new voices and should help launch a new generation of archaeologists, under the guidance and watchful eye of Mr Taylor! While I won’t be involved in the new sites, I was delighted to accept the role of Honorary Patron of the Time Team project. It makes me chief superfan and supporter - all armoury in our shared desire to inspire and stimulate interest in archaeology at all levels.”

I want to make sure I've got this straight. First, y'all essentially filmed 48-minute documentaries about archaeologists, their plans, and their professional passions over the course of three-day speed digs. Then someone gets the brilliant idea to do those digs live. Yep, I think Sir Tony has it right at 8:25. Hunter S. Thompson did Gonzo Journalism, and y'all do Gonzo Archaeology. I'm so glad you did, because your shows have helped me keep mentally active throughout the insanity that was 2020.
Edit: I'm old and broke, but I wanted to support *Time Team Redux* so I thought I'd ask my husband for your "Once And Future Time Team" mug. Then I showed him your Patreon page, explaining that y'all were essentially crowdfunding the revival, and I wanted to support the cause. He was the one who plumped for the monthly Patreon commitment. He said, "I know how much that show has meant to you." I really married the right guy. Waited fucking long enough for him.
Edit 2: Shared your Patreon page on FB last night. You now have another member in Australia because of that Share.

I'm not really sure why "funds" are needed by the public.
      1) what is the target amount
      2) how will the funds be utilized
      3) how would a cache entice a network to pick up your option
      4) does your team have to promote yourselves, thus the public must fork over a few bucks? How unfair to your team & the public. Why not write a few fund proposals to corporations?
No criticism I'm a novice with this Patreon System..I dearly love the series, spent seemingly months trapsing alone in Oxford in a delightful hazy drizzle, pub meat pies. traveling through history I wish to spend a few more years of wanderings, before my health Peter's out. I'd give anything to be present during one of your 'digs'. I simply do not understand how this master class isn't an option the BBC or affiliates aren't picking up. History is sacred.

Now there goes a man that I've admired for a very long. Sir Baldric. Has, in my eye, been the only presenter to take on the Time Team, and have get in his blood. I've been looking back at some episodes from various series. And the fun banter between Tony and Phil always makes me chuckle, even though a lot of was cleverly staged by Tony asking question in tone that would get any person with passion to rise up in defence of the love of their life.
Indeed a professional man that kept his "act" up for all. He never spoke up, nor down to anyone, but rather met everyone head on with respect enough to be respected in turn.
I would very much love to see him on Time team again, even as a guest for a dig.

Sir Tony also had his own show " The Worst Job in History" thru the ages & other archaeology shows. You'll have months of entertaining digging in dirt! Best part? No ads! (Not best, but...) I guess we (America) tried to rip them off & there are just a few shows. I couldn't find them eksewhere. Titled TT America. I think it lasted 4 years. One thing, it is not in order. Plus the first couple if seasons have way fewer than 13 episodes. Se 1 has just 4 shows. Enjoy them. It's so easy to. I favor the Roman & all Scottish digs. Stay safe! Maeve

To be honest, I was fascinated by watching "Baldrick" be the host of a then 15-20 years ago for me random TV program on archeology. It was interesting and I eventually saw several episodes, but I soon realized that this was something completely different and much more interesting than Blackadder (not to disparage when it comes to that particular sitcom series, but it was in a completely different genre). Tony Robinson was fantastic on Time Team and bound it all together in a genuine way by being enthusiastic and explanatory so that everyone could understand (and not least wanted to watch further) what happened on the excavation field. Tony also just got better and better at this as the years went by. Among other things, he became better at involving others (lay people and experts) in the broad conversation about what had historically happened in the particular field. As viewers, we were better informed and the TV format was simply much better. I still watch Time Team here on CZcams and it's a great pleasure.

Time Team not only got me through the pandemic, it taught me about castles and the Romans and how hard it is to find Saxon artifacts and that ditches surrounded villages and what a roundhouse was and a midden and the difference between Tudor and medieval architecture. I learned how pigments for manuscripts were made and that longbows were deadlier than crossbows. From Phil I learned all about flint. From Mick (RIP) I learned from his infinite patience and his love of priories. I love the gleeful laughter when they find something that excites them and how almost anything made Phil roar with laughter. And boy, do I crush on Matt-is he still married to Raksha? (I know they weren't married, it's a joke). They all considered Stewart a pain in the ass, but he was right more often than he was wrong. Ian was a consummate digger (RIP)-he always knew when to stop the machine. John Gater would get so excited when the geophys found something great, but boy could he get mad. So many beautiful archeological finds. Mosaics, Roman villas, pottery, beautiful buildings...it was all so wonderful. And Tony held it all together.
"Landscape is like a book." That's beautiful.
Thank you for getting me through a two-month bout of COVID.

There is so much unknown history out there. It matters little if you find anything, but the quest for it , the excitement of the dig, the camaraderie ,it’s what made such a great program . Yes, Sir Tony, bring back “Time Team” and in three days. Find the “ Black Adder” !

I was born in 69 but still can remember Tony in 'Sam on Boff's Island', loved him in 'Who Dares Wins', was wowed when he appeared as Baldric and then ... Time Team. Tony has been there all my 51 years of life, and so glad to see him here, happy, joyous and a totally nice bloke. Is there a stretch goal to get him and Phil on board?

I’m in the US and only found Time Team recently. I have loved learning the history of the UK (plus a few other locations).
One thought keeps coming to me as I watch these: I wish there WAS a US version of this show. In school, we really only learn tiny shreds of our early and pre-history; Time Team US would be revelatory.

The US version was a non starter really. Just not the same. However, the one episode where Tony and the gang visited Jamestown was so fabulous! They were there for the discovery of several fabulous items being lifted from a well and helped to establish the footprint of a building. Phil played music with a group and it just felt like they were finding connections with their colonial ancestors on our shores. It was also funny how frustrated they were with our slower method of archaeology. One of my favorite episodes.

What makes TimeTeam work for me was that the end wasn't determined before the dig started. Many digs didn't turn out the the way they were supposed to. But the reward at the end was always there. Each time we found out a little more about the history of the Brittish people.

Time Team is so great. I hope it will come back. My dream is that Phil, Mick, Tony and Corenza would show up here on our island in the Stockholm archipelago and make a real viking show examining all of our graves and the stones they left for us to see. It is just lying there, hasnt been examined since 1913- What a show it could be. Thanks ot the legendary team and I hope it will reappear again.

@@lesliestevenson5261 Hi Leslie, great to hear from you. I am living on an Island called Ingarö in Stockholm Archipelago. It is now connected via bridges to the mainland but it was definately not during viking age. We have a huge grave field with henges (more than 100) next to the shoreline back then. There is also ruins from several iron age buildings and an old viking harbour. This hasn´t been examined since 1913 because of lack of funding and interesting. Just the other day when I was walking through the forest there I found a huge "treudd" /do not know the English word (sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treudd_(arkeologi)) that was hidden in some bushes.

This is my fear for the new series. At the heart of it was Tony's energy (and eventually, knowledge) and his interactions with Phil (don't overreact, this is simpifcation). Tim's challenge is to find people who can replicate something like that. BTW I am helping fund this so I am fully engaged.

My memory of Sir Tony is from the Coventry dig which I observed from a local multi story car park.
He was doing a piece to camera, walking down a grassy slope (formerly some victorian garden steps) whilst the diggers (left and right of him) where throwing mud onto a spoil heap opposite themselves. They did this with perfect timing each time he passed, missing him, and making it look like a choreographed scene from a musical directed by Busby Berkeley !
