In the Spinks fight the FIRST knock-down was to the body, while the second and final knock-down was caused by a punch to the head - that's why he didn't curl up when he went down. In fact I remember that because Tyson rolled Spink's Right and then Tyson fired back a right of his own - upper-hook type of punch - like Evander did to Tyson in their first fight. Evander would roll with Tyson straight, while simultaneously loading up is own right hand only to counter Tyson, beautifully I might add. Tyson did the same with Spinks, so I don't know what this talk about a body shot ending the Spinks fight is all about.
My point is, don't believe someone simply because they claim or are proclaimed to be an expert because sometimes they are just flat out wrong for no reason other than they didn't do the work they claimed to have done (watch the fight) or they are mistaken, i actually don't know why or how someone in Paulie's position can be so mistaken on a fight of this magnitude when he of all people should know at the very least how the fight ended. There are replays on CZcams. Don't even believe me...go look up the fucken information yourself!

With regard to Tyson vs toney and who was better,........the answer is that Toney was much better. I didn't say he could beat Tyson head to head, but that's not a valid comparison. In his prime and his very best quality work, Toney was a 160 to 175 pound fighter. He was at 200 as a high school quarterback believe it or not, but football isn't fighting. The fact that he played quarterback at that weight is a tribute to his talent and athleticism in general.
Toney fought a lot of fights at middleweight early in his career. He had to move up eventually, he could no longer take the battle of getting down to 160 while staying strong enough to win a tough fight. He took the only 'real' loss of his career against Roy Jones Jr., and it has been said that Toney had a terrible time making 168 for that fight. He wasn't at his strongest because he had to lose too much weight too quickly to make the fight. Toney never made that excuse, nor did I make it as a big fan of his, Rather,....I heard that from some others that knew about it. I didn't think Toney fought that poorly actually, but he lost the fight. No shame in losing by decision to the P4P fighter of that decade, and without being in top, ready to go condition he couldn't have been expected to beat Roy.
All other losses in Toney's career were by decision, and you could argue that Toney was robbed at least 3 times, in fights with Montell Griffin, Mike McCallum and Samuel Peter. Toney lost twice by decision to Griffin, you could argue he should have won both, but certainly should have won at least one of those fights. Toney appeared to have won the first fight against Sam Peter, but lost a close decision. The first fight Toney had with Mike McCallum was ruled a draw, but everyone in the arena had Toney winning the fight. Toney admits he was gifted a decision against Mike Tiberi,.....so maybe a net loss of 2 fights for Toney on bad decisions.
Despite that, Toney was 70-4-2 at 37 years old, 57 of those 76 fights were title fights, 55 of which he held the title. He defended the titles he won in the middle and super middleweight divisions a total of 27 times in 4 years,.....an unmatched record of defenses in that span over the last 60 years or more. He went 25-0-2 in those fights. He lost to Roy Jones at that time, and to Griffin in his next fight. Then he won the light heavyweight title, went on another streak going 10-0, 9 of which were successful title defenses. After another loss, he won a cruiserweight title, defended that title 13 times, going 13-0,......then won the heavyweight title, defended that title 5 times, going 3-1-1 after losing the title in a close decision to Sam Peter.
Toney averaged nearly 4 title defenses per year for a period of 15 years and from the age of 21 to 37 years old. Nobody defended a title for that many years and with a 4 fight per year average,....and he could have had more fights but an issue with his manager and so on,....slowed his career here and there. There are very few that defended a title 57 times in their careers, let alone averaging 4 defenses per year,.....and amassing 51 wins with a record of 51-4-2 in title fights. A title fight usually consists of a solid opponent, up to the very best of opponents, so Toney only lost 4 out of 55 title fights against tough competition. All 4 were by decision, 2 of those he probably should have won.
In 92 fights overall, Toney was never KO'd, was knocked down only once, and was considered the best defensive fighter in boxing during his career. The list of guys that he beat is very impressive, I know of no other fighter with a list of tougher opponents then Toney had, and defending against these tough fighters more often then all others,...4 times a year on average, makes it more difficult to win. Imagine in how many of those 57 fights Toney must have fought with injuries....considering he defended about every 3 months on average for 15 years. He likely had at least a nagging injury of some kind in every one of those fights.
One of the most difficult accomplishments in boxing, and a category that truly sets a fighter apart from his competitors, is late round KO's. That's a category that truly separates the men from the boys. It's very impressive and the mark of a great fighter because at the highest level he's fighting tough competitors, those that rarely suffer a KO......and knocking out a guy in the 2nd half of fights is far more difficult then the early rounds due to fatigue. Most top shelf guys have to be hit very hard and squarely on the jaw to KO them. In the later rounds both guys are very tired and much weaker,.....therefore it really takes a pair to summon the strength in order to stop a tough opponent late in a fight.Toney Ko'd 29 guys out of 41 wins in a 4 year period during some of his best years. That's a KO rate of over 70%,.......but most impressive is that almost half, 14 of those 29, came in the 2nd half of the fight. Even more difficult, Toney KO'd 9 of those 14 in the 9th through 12th rounds,.......4 of those in the last round. Some of the names on that list include Michael Nunn, Evander Holyfield, Prince Charles Williams, Iran Barkley, Adolpho Washington and others. Check your favorite fighters, all of the best names including Tyson, Holyfield, Holmes, Foreman,.......any fighter you choose and none can match the late round KO record that Toney established.
Toney had no weakness in his game that I can think of. He was the #1 fighter in several categories over the last 60 years or more, and that includes some of the most important categories of late round KO'S, the best defensive fighter, ring generalship,.........he had very fast hands and good power........Toney won titles in the 5 heaviest weight categories from Middleweight up to heavyweight, was never KO'd in 92 fights and only knocked down once . He defended more often then anyone, was never accused of ducking anyone, he had good stamina, good longevity ( still fighting until recently at 48 ), and one of my favorite categories that Toney headed up was not taking shit from irritating reporters in before,... and after fight interviews. That's a bit of tongue in cheek, but in one example,...after stopping Holyfield he was being interviewed by the infamous Jim Gray, and Toney got annoyed with him so he slapped the microphone out of his hand and down to the floor as he walked away.
If you compare skillsets,...Tyson vs Toney,............it's without question that Toney had the best skills. Tyson had good skills in some categories,....hand speed for a big man comes to mind and obviously huge power......but Toney has the best of skills in all categories, and frankly there are few if any that can match Toney from top to bottom. If you're looking to criticize Toney, you have to resort to his weight gain during his career, but I would argue that he kicked everyone's ass despite a 'chubby' physique in his last years. There was an annoying rap against Toney that was echoed by all announcers and for his entire career. They repeated this nonsense word for word before the beginning of each of his fights, indicating a bias and a coordinated effort to find fault. I recall before a particular fight I heard the standard insult by the announcer, and at the time Toney was 44-0-2. I thought how convicting of the petty pricks that they would find fault with one of the best at the time,.... and with an undefeated record.
The claim was that he was lazy in the ring, that he would only fight for one minute out of the 3 minutes in each round. It was a blatant lie, there was no difference in how busy Toney was in a fight then any other guy,....and only a coward would demean a guy that hadn't lost a single fight to that point. They must have scoured the footage of each of his fights, found a fight that had a few slow rounds, insured the tape with Loyds of London for 100 million$ and had it stored in a vault inside of Fort Knox. When the network or other piss ants get an attitude towards a fighter, they hold on to it for life,...as if anyone gives a rat's ass. Well,........that's my book for today,..........God bless all of you......

I know y Vander said this, Toney was vulnerable to left hooks, especially at heavyweight where he didn't move much. Watch the fight with Vander and Toney, how Vander would feint with lead rights and would consistently nail Toney with his left hook, even hurt him a few times. He's always looking to roll with right crosses so he tends to be in the path of left hooks.

Toney would grab niggas by the throat at weigh ins. Punked eubank and benn on live tv. Stood directly in front of everybody he fought, including heavyweights with nasty power. You don’t know shit about Toney, and you very obviously don’t know shit about boxing either. Talking about mike koing toney lol but who’s been knocked out and who hasn’t? Oh ok. When’s the last time tyson knocked out a great fighter? Better yet, When’s the last time mike knocked out a good fighter? Oh ok. Educate yourself cause you a rook

Holyfield DIDN'T headbutt Tyson. Tyson ran into Holyfield. Holyfield was NEVER penalized for any Headbutts and the Refs correctly ruled so. It was called "accidental Headbutts. Tyson NEVER was taught how to work past a jab of a Man coming TOWARDS him. That's why I said Kevin Rooney was a horrible trainer and Cus D'amato was one dimensional. That's why Patterson fired him after the second Liston fight. Holyfield WAS on Steroids...So was Tyson. Evander kicked his ass fair and square!

After beating the a living legend Trevor Berbick he decision 19-5 Bonecrusher Smith in waltz. Koed the Great Pinklon Thomas , another legend TNT tucker, Tyrell Biggs , Tony tubs , Super prime Larry Holmes 35 and 2 year layoff. Carl Williams Frank Bruno . His Best win is over scared Light Heavy Michael Spinks. Boxing experts soooo sure Mike Tyson wins . This is why it wouldn't be that easy, Tyson intimidation NO, James Toney absolutely destroys forward coming fighter. Which chin is the solid one double check that 5 ko losses and was on route for 6. Has been reported to be downed by Mccall and Page in sparring. Best fighters Tyson fought Holifield and Lewis 0-3 should have been 3ko losses. What is the evidence?
