They simply did not have any chance at all whatsoever. Burnt beyond recognition sadly. God love and protect their souls and families. I was only 12 at the time, but I remember that it was like yesterday sadly. Weather in July 1988 was poor, a windy and wet month, poor enough summer, at least here in Ireland anyway. As for the news vibe and presentation, the news back then was more demur, but calming, very honest, less sensationalist than the shit that passes as news today. The diction is more pronounced, slower and less fake than the crappy presentation of today's news. The graphics presentation may not be as high tech as the American news of the time, but it's excellently impressive with the metamorphic computer transition of arrows to words. Very creative. They did the best with what they had at the time. I'd much prefer the news of back then. Back then, it was all substance and less flash, today, it is all flash and no substance, that's the difference.
I was seven when this happened and remember this. Could see the smoke from the top of Bennachie, was there with my Dad and Granda. Terrible what those men had to go through. Edit: will be 35 years this July. Unbelievable
Lived at the foot of bennachie at the time and remember that after watching the helicopters all night at my aunties house in BoD. She was an A&E nurse at ARI and shot in as soon as all the choppers woke us up.
My dad worked on a few oli rigs during its hey day in the north sea.. he hated it ,but the money was good. The h&s was non existent.. he fell down some stairs after slipping on oil that was on stairs. He sued them and was basically blackballed from working again on the rigs.. the money men cared not a jot for the rigfers n rough necks..
the rigg started its life by pumping oil hence the fire proof walls round the mashine rooms, control room and living quaters. then some years later it started pumping gas aswell...but the walls werent up graded and made blast proof....if thay had then the first relitivly small explosion would have been contained and not damaged and ruptured other pipes which led to the domino affect of massive explosions !! nor would the comand control room have been destroyed. in other words someone somehwere didnt bother spending the money and going to the effort to up grade the safty needed when starting pumping gas. criminal negligence, no one was held accountable in the end.
What safety standards? Basically there were none. Occidental should have been fined billions for the loss of life. They cut so many corners in the safety of these men its horrendous..

Proper brutal. I remember being 15 years old and in a school trip in Wales when this happened. Absolute horror. Those men were screwed.

Oil production needs explosion proof walls too.. All oil comes up mixed with gas.

They used this one for 9 years from 1984-93 then remixed it for the virtual studio from 1993-99.
