- Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a bit of an undiscovered beach town gem on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.
We spent a day showing you around starting out with our great open air AirBNB in the middle of the jungle just outside of the town.
We then heading into town, walking along Black Beach (Playa Negra), flying our drone while we go. On our way into town we discover in old barge in the water, sunken to create a breakwater.
After walking along the water for awhile, we head into town to get some lunch and find a cute cafe/bookstore called Cafe Rico.
Afterwards we head back to the water where we spot a sunken sailing ship just off the shore.

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a town in southeast Costa Rica, on the Caribbean coast. It’s known for the Salsa Brava surf break and beaches like black-sand Playa Negra. The Jaguar Rescue Center rehabilitates wild cats and other animals. Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge has rainforest, wetlands and mangroves. To the north, Cahuita National Park protects a large coral reef and has a shipwreck dive site.
Puerto Viejo is the largest tourist destination on Costa Rica's small Caribbean coast. Other nearby communities are Cahuita, Cocles, Punta Uva and Manzanillo . The vibe here is laid-back, Caribbean-style with a great diversity of people living here and visiting here.
Playa Negra, the paradise for surfers.
Known for its world-class waves and breaks, Playa Negra is a surfer's paradise. Famous as the filming location for the cult classic, "Endless Summer II," this beach sits along the northwestern region of Guanacaste along the northern Pacific coast. But this small beach community has more to offer than just its surfing breaks. From great hotels, resorts and budget lodges to renowned cafes and local delicacies, Playa Negra has a little something to offer every visitor. Enjoy the laid-back Tico lifestyle here while escaping the hustle of other surf-centric communities along the Pacific Coast. Those staying here will also be just a short drive away from Marino Las Baulas National Park, which is a famous nesting ground for the leatherback turtles.

My favorite place in my Costa Rica!!!
Now this is our kind of space. Awesome!! We love the wilderness places like this.
This might be your next trip then Jon? ;) - T
6:36 I had that when I visited Puerto Viejo last year. It was the bomb!
Breakfast Goals right there Kyle! haha.. 👌 - Trevor
Hi guys, I was living in Puerto Viejo for over 4 years, and I've just watched your video!
You guys did really great content!
Just commenting on the black sand at Playa Negra, its black due to the charcoal extraction decades ago up river in the mountains, so it's black cause of that! It does exists black beaches due to the volcanoes, but not this one!
And you've have eated at the best breakfast place in town Cafe Rico, I've worked there!
Big hug hope you guys can go back there one day again as I want!!
We're going in 2 weeks and this video just got me even more super excited!!
A little red frog smoothie to get you up and running in the morning 😎
What an amazing and cool place you did find again. And the town also leaves a relaxed impression. That natural straws are 👍. That bowl/plate of your dish is even cool. You did a great job again showing us this unique spot in Costa Rica.
This one was totally by accident ha. It was meant to be our stop over on route to the San Jose Airport. We decided to stay for 3 days :) The food at the cafe was superb! - T
Welcome to my country 🇨🇷 PURA VIDA!
Bro, just be careful with the snakes 😅
haha Thanks and will do. We're always on the lookout for them. Thx for watching! - T
@Rebel Speaks costa rica has a ton of snakes spiders scorpions and other little insects. We went there for my uncles wedding 2 years ago and everyday when I went into my bag for clothes there was a scorpion just chilling in there. We did this zipline in the rainforest as well we saw quite a few snakes. But honestly just throw so.e good hiking boots on maybe pants if you're really worries and you'll be fine. If you get bit there's a lot worse places to die 😂🤣
Great video! Thanks! I'm in the process of planning a Costa Rica trip with my family. This town looks awesome!
This side of CR is very different than where most go. You're going to have a blast in this town if you make it there. - Trevor
What a cool area!! Awesome drone footage, and that ship wreck looked like a cool area to explore! Costa Rica looks amazing!
The drone came in handy there didn't it!? The shipwreck was super cool to explore. I'm glad that's not our boat. We'll we don't own a boat.. but you know what I mean. :D - T
Go crazy for Costa Rica 😍🔥
Us too. CR is the best! yay
That place is insane!
To think we were originally using it as a stop over! We so enjoyed our time there. It's such a great little beach town. - T
This is such a great video! Puerto Viejo is so picturesque.
Glad you enjoyed it! - Trevor
On our visit there we would see horses running along the beach on our half mile walk into town each day from our motel each day. Love this little town! 💗
Omg I always wanted to go to Costa Rica!
We'll now you have to do it Naomi! :D Thanks for watching. - T
Accidentally came across your channel and love it. Good job 👏 👍🏾 Greetings from London UK 🇬🇧
Nice! Thanks guys
Glad you enjoyed it Francesco. Thanks for watching. 👍 - Trevor
Yes. Black sand beaches are from volcanic stone that has broken down (and/or ash) :) Lots of them in Costa Rica!
That's what we thought :) We were on the west coast a few years ago and I don't remember the beaches there being this colour. - T
Muy lindo its beautiful and your home. Amazing good video brother
Thanks so much
Hey, wow that would be an amazing adventure and so much fun! I found you on Twitter. Wanted to show my support.
Ah we appreciate you coming over to YT and watching Kimberly. Thanks so much. There's a lot more adventure on the way as well ;) - Anna
Fun to see people discover the Talamanca Coast. When I first arrived in January of 1978 the road stopped in Cauhita. When we finally got there it was very primitive but there were no other white people around. We surfed the reef as good as it gets by ourselves and ate lobster and pargo everyday for weeks. Stanford’s was the Only Restaurant and Manuel’s, called The Chinaman’s, was the only store and the only telephone in town. There were no real roads and the town went dark early when they shut off the generators. Due to the lack of creature comforts, like sleeping on the floor of Sylvester’s place, a local fisherman we had the whole place to ourselves. We hired dugouts to take us down almost to the Rio Sixaola. A Golden Moment in time. Over the years I watched it grow and change. Thankfully the best spots in the area are not on the video. Ask for Layli if you decide to go..
Costa Rica is not hotter than other places in central America, we have multiple weather, you are in the hottest provience as well as Guanacaste. In big metropolitan area the weather is very different. Puerto viejo has black sand, however cahuita, Manzanillo has white sand
love your video🧡❤️👍
Thanks so much Mina. There is lots more on the way. - Anna
The bacon there was the best I’ve ever tasted, all the food there was great, infact that place was a life saver for me I didn’t want to eat in many other places. We stayed opposite so it was convenient 😁. Pura Vida
PS. I forgot to mention in my last comment about your delicious looking meal! I'm Canadian as well and I immediately thought of poutine when I saw your meal 🇨🇦
WOW!!! That looks so amazing! What a wonderful place :)That looks like it would be so awesome to stay there an relax right in the jungle. Awesome content. cant wait to follow more of your adventures :)
Thanks Adam! 😀 It was such a great little beach town. Took us by surprise really. The jungle house was the absolute best. Get ready .. lots more adventures are coming up. Mexico is next! - Trevor
Awesome! Thats where I have been for almost a month now. Just backpacking around Mexico and soon down into Guatemala :) Cant wait to see where you will go. Cheers :)
We'll be in Tulum, Playa and Holbox for those. We've been to all before as well. So you'll see some vlogs like this one and likely a high end hotel or two that we'll be working with. You're trip sounds incredible! - T
Awesome! I cant wait to follow along. If you make it further down you have to check out the ruins at Calukmul and an amazing Laguna called Laguna Guerrero. You can take a boat to a tower 60ft in the middle of the lagoon that over looks the water and the mangroves. If you stay the night you will see an amazing sunset and sunrise, I have the video of when I went on my channel if you want to check it out :) Cheers
Great tip! We did Bacalar last year and it looks close by. You must get there through Chetumal?
Great Job!!! Thank you... :-)
Thanks!
I was there way back in 2005 before we got married. I wanna take naz there. This is the first vlog I have seen in PV. Loved this place!
It's such a hidden gem! We hope we'll get to go back there again soon. I bet it's a lot different now than 2005 to! - Trevor
Ha ha looks the same. I think that barge was there too.😁
So beatifull thanyou guys
You need to come back to Costa Rica! There is so much more to it!
Where would you recommend we visit? - Trevor
@@DelightfulTravellersthere are so many diverse places. I will be glad to make a list and post it here. If you got an email I can send you some very amazing pictures of the country's national parks. Just to the north of Puerto Viejo is Tortuguero Canals National Park, our Costa Rican Amazonia. As soon as I have it I will send it to you. Thanks for answering.
My beautiful home town.... I miss it! Miami is beautiful but Costa Rica is a paradise.
We love both of those places but it's hard to beat the chilled out vibe in this little beach town - Trevor
Is it still like this or has it been over run after the covid rush of people?
FYI: there is another Puerto Viejo on the Pacific side in the Tamarindo area. Thi video is in the Talamanca area on the Caribbean side.
That house looks like it's right out of the Flintstones!
You didn't spot Fred in the bathroom? ;) - T
very interesting. Unsure if I'd be able to sleep with so many creatures nearby!
You get use to it pretty quick. I bet John would love that place! - Trevor
Love watching your travel vlogs! And that jungle house place you guys are staying at looks really cool! Definitely something I would want to try. And I love the drone shots of the ship wreck!! Just curious, is the natural straw edible? Lol. Anyway, safe travels to Mexico! ❤🌺😊
The house was amazing. There were so many animals around to see . The shipwreck was also quite something. Mexico here we come! - Anna😀
Forgot to answer your straw question. Unfortunately no haha
They are papaya stems. Very stringy and hold up well.
Oh.. good to know. Thx Janet!
Wild apartment :-)
haha right? Easily the most unique place we've ever stayed. You can't beat the sounds of the jungle. - T
Delightful Travellers sounds a bit scary :-)
My friends John and Eric own the dome. 😊
Really? What a small world it is. Did your randomly find this video or where you following us already? - Trevor
Love your videos!! is that the only place you visited in CR? There are so many big waterfalls and hidden gems you would love too!
Laura thank you. 😃 It's the only place we visited and filmed in CR yes. We've been to Nosara, Samara and San Jose too. We do want to get back there though - Anna
@@DelightfulTravellersgreat!! when you come back I recommend you guys to visit the Rincon de la Vieja zone (lots of waterfalls and turquoise rivers), the Drake Bay, Arenal volcano area and the beaches of Peninsula de Nicoya :-)
Anna looked beautiful with that little flower in her hair hahaha!!!! BTW guys isn't it little risky.....insects, snakes, spiders can easily enter your washroom and their bites can be fatal.
Thanks Bunts 😊 Re: Little Critters. There wasn't a lot of that at all inside the place. We were on the lookout though just incase. - Anna
Delightful Travellers But are there folks to take care of the needs of the guests including safety? Looks like a wild adventure
Yes the owners are right next door. 30 seconds away. :) We will never forget this place that's for sure! - Anna
Sorry, I know I'm late to the party. First, I was there in July 2018 and the yacht was still there just as it was in your video. If you go back, you have to eat at Bread & Chocolate. They have the best food period; and their fruit smoothies and cacao nibs are by far the best we had anywhere (we were in Arenal/La Fortuna, El Castillo, San Jose and PV). Also, try Soda Lidia's place for dinner.
I love how chill this place is but the bugs would eat me alive and take away from my whole experience.
Great video! What kind of camera do you guys use if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks! In this video we used a Canon G7X. Since then we've purchased a Canon M50 which is even better - Trevor
Oh my gosh!! This place Puerto Viejo looks amazing! We're snooping places in South/central america for the winter. Thanks for the tips! Also, maybe didn't know you are from Canada... What part?
You're snooping some great spots! PV is a little gem honestly. Check out our Bocas del Toro Panama videos too. That's such an amazing place. We're from Halifax, NS. You guys? - Trevor
Delightful Travellers we will definitely check out some of your others. We're from Toronto, but soon, we'll be mobile. If all goes well we were thinking of trying to do a road trip bout east before winter. Only been once and it had such a cool vibe, time to see more. Safe travels, if you're ever in the area, you've got guides. Lol
Definitely! We're in TO from time to time and if you make it this way let us know. We are away a lot so maybe we'll bump into you guys on the road. (We're also dig. nomads). - T
You must explore the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific. Amazing beaches like Mal País and Santa Teresa, among other beautiful spots. The Northern Province of Guanacaste has amazingly beautiful beaches. The Central Pacific National Park Manuel Antonio, Bahia Ballena and the South Pacific. On the other hand, you have beautiful places in the mountain ranges.
I should have known you two have been here too lol. Have you been to Grenada? I was just there after visiting Cabarete. Leaving for Puerto Viejo tomorrow.
haha yes we have been here. Not to Grenada though. We can't wait to get back to the Caribbean 🤗 - Anna
We are going to Puerto Viejo soon and would love to rent this place. Where did you stay? I'm trying to find it! Looks sooo cool!
Yay! You're going to have so much fun. Here is the link www.airbnb.ca/rooms/4977241 If it's your first time staying at an AirBnB use this link to sign up and save $45. www.airbnb.ca/c/annad15773 Have a blast! 😃- Trevor
Hey guys, great video! Any excursions or sights you recommend in the area? Heading this way in about 6 weeks time. I am a sucker for animals so will certainly be checking out the Jaguar Rescue Centre.
We didn't do any excursions so we can't quite recommend any sorry Thomas. I can guarantee you'll love it here though 😃 - Trevor
Just great! May I ask in which month you were there, in which season?
We were there in March! :)
Good job. Great video. I am planning my trip Feb 2019. I was told to go to the Caribbean side because the beaches were white and the ocean blue (because of the Carribean) but the beaches u show don't seem any different than (say) Monteverde (on the west side). Is that true? By the way, I love the heat (I am Jamaican).
Where did you finally go?
There are white sand beaches in both the pacific and the Caribbean. Try Manzanillo or Punta una in Caribbean side or Quesera, Manuel antonio, isla tortuga in pacific for example
It's broken seashells that makes the white sand . If the sand is black then there's no seashells
I don't know what they been smoking but I want some 😎
looks like the flintstones house, or a copy ...cool
haha it so does - Anna
7:58; best hostel in town
those adorable red frogs...id loveloveLOVE to have those running around my backyard!! Are they poisonous..my cats might try to eat them and id have to keep them indoors...still ...i'm imagining tripping on thc pills there with fire engine red frogs and a huge forest and berry drinks....super cool
They are poisonous ‼️
uber is easier to get near the bigger towns. I tried getting one in Samara Carillo. Unavailable. Fortunately one of the owners of Interbus saved me and found a ride I needed to Punta Islita
Hear ya. We're a long way off until uber is available outside main cities and towns everywhere - Trevor
Learn how to pronounce Costa Rica drove me nuts but enjoyed video of my Paradise!
We're glad you at least enjoyed the video Richard. We're not going to get everything right with pronunciations. We're tourists remember and we travel a lot. - Trevor
Delightful Travellers Sorry guys was having a bad day didn’t mean to get pissy really enjoyed your video! So I commented before finishing the video you are a sweet couple!
But getting the name of the Country correct is the least you can do :) @@DelightfulTravellers
Hey the Airbnb link is for the place you stayed in bocas. I’m going to puerto viejo this November and would love to stay at that cool place you showed us around but I can’t find it on Airbnb now. Would greatly value your help! Thanks
Good catch.. we just changed that so it should be fixed up :)
Delightful Travellers thank you so much!
Its too late now but I wish you would have included prices.
did you think it was unsafe at certain points? I kind of want to move there sometimes..
We felt completely safe in this town at all times. You'll love it :)
Did you guys take San Jose airport and then 4 hr ride to puerto viejo?
We actually came from Panama (Bocas del Toro) by bus. But leaving we took the shuttle from PV to San Jose yes - Trevor
Bugs fly in the window though
Guys: I'm costarrican and I've been in Puerto Viejo but I don't know that little cabin¡¡¡ info please :-)
The info is down in the description area 😃- Anna
take care.. This towns is very dangerous. Almost every month kill some people.. A lot of drugs and robbers.
haha i bet that bacon wasnt as salty right? the way we make it here is absurd...I never understood why americans love bacon so much- it's way too salty for me to eat!!!!
That's the way bacon should taste like when you raise the pigs with natural food. Not GMO or sprayed shit. Pardon my Spanish
This isn't the first place we're I've had bacon like this. You can get it 'fresh/natural' in most countries. But this place may have been a notch above the others. - Trevor
Do not show virgin areas to tourists!
Thanks for watching. But it's not that unknown really. Not for 2018 at least. - Trevor
