    Hello Joseff McKenneth ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us.
    Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Tampere (Finland) in 2015, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band. This epic song is part of their 8th studio album, "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" (2015).
    Also a recent sad news - these days Marco Hietala, the bass player and male singer of the band, announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us.
    About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
    As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band, together with the stellar vocals of our Dutch metal queen, Floor Jansen. Hope you'll continue on this path.
    Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
    " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
    Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
    Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
    There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
    I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
    Hoping you'll continue this journey with us, I'll drop here a list of songs (with links) with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory):

    Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th 2020 named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: czcams.com/play/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg.html (for example: "Shoemaker", the 3rd track from this album, tells the story of Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science, whose ash was sent on the Moon after his death, as a tribute from the scientific community ..)
    The links presented above are with the current singer of the band, Floor Jansen, since I'm a fan of the recent era of the band, with Floor as the singer. I have nothing against previous singers, but I do not consider myself the most suitable person to give specific recommendations from their repertoires.
    ** I think it's your place, fans of previous Nightwish eras, to present to the reactors the best recommendations with Tarja Turunen and Anette Olzon, because you know and appreciate them directly. I encourage you to add the best recommendations in the comments. **
    That being said, I will add here the message left the other days by an old fan of the band, @Fabrizio Gorla: " To be fair to the old fanbase, you may want to include also some of these songs. Just be fair and don’t make a comparison if you don’t want an open war in your comment section.
    * The Tarja era *:
    The power of Tarja - Nightwish - Wishmaster [Live] - czcams.com/video/eJTlH521E6w/video.html
    The lyrics of this song are a treasure of citations from fantasy books.
    The power of Tarja II - Nightwish - End Of All Hope Live at the Summer Breeze festival (2002) - czcams.com/video/ESlyjQl90p0/video.html
    A classic revisited - NIGHTWISH - The Phantom Of The Opera (OFFICIAL LIVE) - czcams.com/video/tL25rbnvM4o/video.html
    The old school - Nightwish - 01 Dark Chest Of Wonder (Live End Of An Era 2005 HD) - czcams.com/video/ROdKrGVVuI8/video.html
    The first big one - Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (LIVE) - czcams.com/video/YODCM26JXOY/video.html
    Mesmerizing - Nightwish - The Siren (DVD End Of An Era) HD - czcams.com/video/LUy8T_3kieI/video.html
    @DeeDee80: Gabriel, would be good to add in the Tarja list "Pharaoh Sails To Orion" czcams.com/video/ZpkH187t5Mk/video.html . It's one of the best.
    @NicholasCorvin: And in the Tarja era you could also mention "Nemo" [LIVE "End of an Era"] czcams.com/video/ww2f4PPprSc/video.html
    @Fabrizio Gorla: * The Anette era *:
    NIGHTWISH: "Scaretale" (OFFICIAL LIVE) - czcams.com/video/5EmpS8E7d30/video.html

    NIGHTWISH - Amaranth (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) - czcams.com/video/GdZn7k5rZLQ/video.html
    @NicholasCorvin: The list could include in the "Anette era" "The Islander" [Official Music Video] (it's maybe their best videoclip) - czcams.com/video/--tFFz44zvc/video.html
    * Bonus tracks *:
    Tarja Turunen & Floor Jansen 'Over the hills' MFVF XI Wieze, Belguim 20/10/13 - czcams.com/video/57WsNYItbSU/video.html

    You can also react to Floor Jansen "tapping" other musical genres in Beste Zangers 2019 (TV show from Netherlands) here is a playlist made by Floor herself (start listen it in reverse order..): czcams.com/play/PL8iSYWeQhlimgUnWw1FDdiJN0msPzqpLo.html
    For entire episodes of the show with En subtitles, you should check Denise Hofs's DM channel: dailymotion_dot_com/xpinkeu/videos
    In these pandemic times, Floor Jansen has decided to make covers for us, which you can find on her YT channel - there are already 6 covers there, the first is "Let It Go" from "Frozen" (19 weeks ago, already over 2.288M views), the second - "Alone" from "Heart" , released 17 weeks ago - 1.103M and counting. Then 15 weeks ago she dropped the third cover, in Dutch: "Is Dit Nou Later" from Stef Bos - already 271K views. Just before Christmas she made a powerful cover of "Ave Maria" - already 290K views. 12 weeks ago she added a remastered / remixed version of the first one, "Let It Go" - already 192K. 10 weeks ago she added to the list a powerful cover of "Adagio" by Lara Fabian (!!!) - 403K views now. Then, just 5 weeks ago she gave us the last one so far: "Oblivion" by M83 - 437K views in 5 weeks..
    Thank you! Waiting for more Nightwish reactions. All the best from RO. Stay safe.

    The man doing the narration is biologist Richard Dawkins, and this is the song of his book "The Greatest Show On Earth", which should be required reading for everybody. At the Wembley Arena performance he attended in person and did all final narration live. You should listen to that one too - different but equally great for other reasons.

    Tough on the outside, but hell are these guys all the nicest people on the inside! Modest, friendly, down to earth bunch of people playing a range of songs from the heaviest metal to a more ballad sort of music. Each and every one of them professional and really into what they're doing. There's some great interviews online too showing how modest our Metal Mozart (Tuomas) really is. Great reaction!!

    Nightwish army incoming...
    You my good man are one of the very few I've seen that knew it was an Irish Bagpipe also known as Uilleann pipes, I'mpressed.
    One of the reasons that Nightwish is not that known in the US is because they have the mindset that a song takes as long as a song takes, and not just the standard 3 min. that every pop song being played on the Radio. Granted this is their longest song, and they also have short ones, mostly I would guess are around 6-7 min. but times just flies when you listen to them.

    One of my favorite reactions ever! This is a pretty challenging song to start with for this band, but for someone going in almost completely blind you pretty much nailed it. Your intuition, and your grasp of the emotions and ideas being expressed were basically right on. The song is, indeed, about the evolution of the universe, and life on Earth, the rise and eventual fall of humanity. It is based on the writings of evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, who is the voice doing the narration. You might get roasted by a few whiners for stopping the video before the very end, but there was no way for you to know there was anything left. I really enjoyed your reaction and your presence in the moment of the song. I hope you’ll take a look at more of their music...since you are a singer, I’d recommend Ghost Love Score (live at Wacken 2013 version) as it is a showcase for Floor’s many vocal styles and textures.

    You should have run the credits through the end. Never cut the performances of Nightwish short as something relevant to the story still may come up as in this one. As live concerts with Nightwish were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation our Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen has uploaded many interesting videos in the last year, such as mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses and so much more. Her 'Fan Friday' videos are hilarious. Just go to her CZcams channel and unpack some of the presents she left there. When you get to the legendary performance of 'Ghost Love Score' at the Wacken concert of 2013 also check out the video Floor made reacting to herself performing this. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.

    Welcome to the most intriguing rabbit hole in music Joseff. You started in the deep end though. Gabriel has given you a great blueprint for he Nightwish journey. As a fan of 25+ years I can tell you that: the degree of depth, feel, compositional breadth and creativity, execution cohesiveness, musicianship and artistic expression in Nightwish's art form (notice I did not use the word songs as it fails miserably to convey any meaning) is staggering. Every lyric, cord and key shift is meticulously planned and executed and supported by meaningful and worth-exploring lyrics. Nothing is done in vain. Everything has its place in the whole structure. Every single one of them is a world-class musician/vocalist but they all check their egos at the door and solely serve the music and its needs. We, the lucky ones who discovered them early on in the 90s, have been spoiled rotten to the point that it is almost impossible to listen to any other music without making the comparison and realizing that the pastures are always more lush and greener in Nightwish musical land.

    The fact that this was your introduction to Nightwish, and that your reaction contained so much thought and openness is quite remarkable. Often times people jump into this song, or Poet and the Pendulum and are totally unable to grasp any meaning intended by Toumas. Of course he writes so that much of his feelings can apply to many situations, so that is not always a bad thing. But that said, I really enjoyed your reaction. Cheers!

    I've seen them live 4 times and seeing them again in 2022. Very Sad to say that Marco, the bass player, has left the band because he felt disenfranchised with the music industry. His very unique and incredible backing vocals will be impossible to replace. Tuomas is their main song writer and Floor is just awesome so they will still be great but just not the same. 😢

    Joseff, self-healing facilitator, oh, feel the heal from this band!
    Lots of comments over the years attribute Nightwish music
    for reaching into their hearts, healing emotional problems.
    C'mon, you got the attention span!
    "American form of Thomas"?
    Finnish, from 🇫🇮 Finland, this is at Tampere.
    Oh, you are gonna Love this!
    You got the pronounciation of Tuomas well from Marko.
    "Kiitos" is Thank you. You can thank them at the end.
    You pick up on a lot of things, impressive.
    Rock opera, cinematic, Celtic... James Bond, Overture.
    Feel it, epic, Irish Bagpipe, Fantasy, Hercules, mountain top.
    "Roller coaster ride", oh, you mean "Last Ride of the Day"!
    The narrator, Floor has you transfixed, then she starts singing, smiles.
    Telling the story of nature.
    Presentation, dark Goth look, lyrics and voices totally different.
    Where you reading the script?

    The song is about evolution. The voice over at the beginning and at the end is professor Richard Dawkins who wrote the book "The Greatest Show on Earth" which is evolution. He read qoutes from his own book and from "The Origin of Species" by Darwin.

    After listening to this song a lot of times I still discover little things. This time I noticed Troy wearing a T-shirt with Darwin's portrait. Joseff, did you notice the musical nods to Bach and Metallica? Or that Richard Dawkins is the narrator, reading his own work? There was a concert in Londen where he was actually there, coming on stage to do his narrative live...

  • @richletram539
    @richletram539 Před 2 lety

    Yes! The story of nature, creation, the earth's history. One line in the song, "Lonely farer in the Goldilocks zone" stands out to me. The "Goldilocks zone" is what scientists refer to the orbital zone a planet must be in to be habitable. Too close to a star and it is too hot to support life. Too far away and it is too cold to support complex life. Of course, this line is referring to the earth, to us. The last couple of verses are just incredible. As short and fleeting as life is, we were here. How many things in the Universe can say that? 😁

  • @n5iln
    @n5iln Před 3 lety +1

    The part you missed at the end was Prof. Richard Dawkins (who was reading the other quotes in the song) reading from Charles Darwin's "On The Origin of Species":
    "There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers having been originally breathed into a few forms, or into one; and that whilst this planet goes cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."
    This is the passage from which Prof. Dawkins took the title of his own book, "Endless Forms Most Beautiful". Tuomas mirrored that title for the album on which this piece appears. The entire album, with the exception of perhaps one instrumental piece, is recognition and homage to Prof. Dawkins' book. That exception is titled "The Eyes of Sharbat Gula", and is worth a listen on its own.
    Your first taste of Nightwish was their magnum opus. That's like a professional baseball player whose first big-league hit is a grand slam.
