I have an identical 1951 Willys Military Jeep. I just brought him from Brazil and now he's going to walk a lot through the beautiful streets of the state of Georgia.

It's fun to watch this video as I grew up a few blocks from the original Willy's Overland assembly complex in West Toledo. The front of the plant was glass windows so you could watch the Jeep's roll off the line. Then we would walk over to the old test track and play.

I had a 1943 Ford Jeep that I put a Buick V/6 and T-90 transmission in. It was a very good little Jeep but I had to watch not breaking one of the stock rear end axles.
My father turn a old world war 2 jeep into a swamp buggy back in the early eighties. We took that thing down to fish eating creek every November.

These are the Jeeps that really made their reputation. That half-track was awesome. It would have been a blast to fire those machine guns.

i can remember back in the late 50s and early 60 there was a lot of war surplus
I tried to buy one in the 80's but they cut them into four pieces because they were unsafe.

wow, you got a lot of nice WW11 stuff there,
when I was in high school auto body in 1977 there was a 1952 M38 brought in, the thing looked brand new, and it was, I was going nuts, I went over and climbed in the drivers seat and the speedometer read 100 miles, wow, yes it was brand new and I was nuts over it. and my God they panted it police blue, this is because the police dpt bought it. later when I was 20 I bought a 47 2A with the stock 4 flat head..
now, for those old carbs, it would be better to pump the throttle slowly 5 times instead of pumping it fast 10 times, because pumping it slow allows the fuel to refill the accelerator pump more.

During my military service in the french army during the mid sixties, we still had such Jeeps (built under licence in France after WW II). I drove them a lot, they were highly unstable. Some people said that the Jeeps killed more GI's than the germans !...

could someone offer their opinion. In the 1960's, in Arizona, a high school buddy's father collected cars. Among others in the garage he had a 1960's Corvair with the turbocharged Spyder engine, a brand new '63 Split window Corvette, a beat up Dodge Power-Wagon being restored and a beat up WWII era Jeep. This is 60 years ago, recalling details is a little sketchy and although everyone wanted me to be impressed with the PowerWagon my attention was focused on the Corvette. I simply walked past the Jeep and noticed a large bullet hole in the body near the door opening. The body at that location was not sheet metal, the “bullet” hole edge had extruded out like a typical tank armor hit. The hole might have been bigger than my thumb, but I was pretty skinny back then. I inspected the bullet hole and I guessed the body appeared to be about 1/2 or 3/4" thick. Hard to tell. The father told us that the metal was aluminum and I thought at the time for reduced weight. But at the time I was puzzled “if they were trying to reduce weight why so thick?” Now I am thinking that it might have been Dural that was also used in aircraft armor. Possibly the armor was on the bottom and wrapped around the bottom of the side panels? Like I said, the aqua blue colored Corvette had my attention and I did not do much investigating. Did Willys or Ford produce an armored version? Was it common? Rare? Was an armored version intended for special people? i.e. did Patton have one? I doubt that this jeep saw combat. The Jeeps were probably left to rot in Europe and few if any made it back state side. I don’t know. Maybe it was a factory one-of experimental mockup with a test shot? Any thoughts on this?
My dad had a WW2 Jeep, it was pretty rough but we had fun riding in it. If I had it now I would restore it,sadly Mi rust killed it. It went to the scrap yard back in the 60's.
I bet that was fun! It's great you got to do that. Old cars need the right weather to survive - CA is good for that. I did a lot of jeep trips as a kid in a CJ 7 - when he started the Willys it brought back those memories. The sound and smell was very similar. It's one vehicle that the DNA has been passed on through the years. But tbh the modern Jeep doesn't get me as excited as the old ones.

you can find these for sale all the time - what you have to figure out is the quality of a restoration and how much it t is original parts like frame and tub versus newly fabricated.

really cool video really enjoyed watching it going thing I don't understand about when I see these old Willy Jeeps as why everybody just makes them it seems like either the army or the marine version the Navy use these two during world war II and in Korea and I don't understand why I don't see a lot of the gray ones instead of just always the green ones?
I've seen a few Navy versions but you are right most go for the green army Jeep. The grey does look good though.

thanks Jay - well they are obviously a want not a need so by that measure they are expensive, a nicely restored one can run anywhere from 15 - 35k depending on the level of work and rarity of the model.

My dad was over there 101st, and drove them unless he was jumping out of planes, or flying black gliders.

He sure did, although he had his moments of silence. Having to kill people leaves it scars in seeing the faces of those you put bullets into, or your M-8 bayonet. His joyous moments of France and other areas where the liberated citizens and others, mixed with flying black gliders spotting enemy positions and calling in artillery with the night then come alive with fire. He did his job well, and spoke 7 languages.
He sounds like a brilliant and courageous man. It really is hard to imaging what it really must have been like to be in those places at that time. When looking at the numbers of the Jeeps alone built for WW2 it really struck me at what an effort it was for the country. The number of vehicles, planes, ships, bullets etc. and then all the men and women who did their part and of course so many who died for the effort. It really is a humbling thing.
That war was the only point in US history that this country was truly united. Germany would have blasted thru Europe, but stalemated with Russia leaving few trade options afterwards. Since they had the atomic bomb in the works, it would have only been a matter of time before their next campaign of world domination. With Japanese history of domination of China in it's past, it too would have fallen under nuclear threat of annihilation, leaving the North American Continent a target as well. The price of freedom is high and cost the effort of every citizen, even them losing their loved ones to it. Pity today's youth have no clue.
Hey discover RC, I think a lot of people would like to see an fpv setup video, with all of the components and how to wire them up, not sure how to get started with quality stuff on a budget for use on a big fpv plane like the skysurfer (1.5m span). Thanks!
well quality and budget are hard to do together. The thing about cheap stuff is that it often fails requiring you to buy more stuff. I think I have an older video of the basic fatshark set up I use on planes that size. And I assume you want 5.8 and not a more expensive long range set up.
The one they ran with the red oil filler cap had the wrong engine in it. It was an F134 out of a much later jeep. The original jeep from WWII had an L134. Wad a flat head. No overhead valves. Too bad he didn't point this out.

That is a Hurricane motor from the 50s. It’s not a WW2 Jeep, I did not hear him mention that and considering he mentioned the bumper I’m surprised. The Flat 4 in the early Willys is unmistakable, compared to the 50s Hurricane. Not a GO Devil.
The stock 4-banger is woefully short on horsepower. I hated my 1948 2-a till I put a Ford 302 in it.

you just have to look for them - ads, craigslist, warjeeps etc. There is no single place to find them.

no question is dumb - no, mostly what he does now is work on jeeps people send to him either for restoration or repair. He doesn't build them to sell.

So no way to get an alternator in there rather than a generator? Or no use for all that electricity? Generators not so long lasting, but it’s not a commuter. Last time we tried to start ours both 6v batteries exploded. I thinking boosting 40’year old batteries off our tractor was stupid.

They don't really restore them to sell. They take in old Jeeps and restore them for the owner.

The T-84 tranny was junk. It had bushings instead of bearings but it wasn't meant to go 100,000 miles.

he is talking about the tub. Leftover Jeeps became popular in the Philippines after ww2. But the bodies tended to rust out so they started making reproduction tubs. Nothing wrong with that, but he is just pointing out the tub is original.
