    Josh, consider planting some bi-color sweet corn ! Not only is it great for roasting ( the way we prefer it ) or microwaving, but it freezes well ! Lots of varieties from 'super sweets' to 'medium sweets ' .. And anything past its prime just toss to the goats !

    The queen cell has hatched on the frame on the first hive. Either they have swarmed, replaced a failing queen or lost their queen and had to replace her.
    You could catch the queen by the wing or put your finger or something in front of her so she would crawl up on it so you could move her but remove the glove to do it or you might hurt her. The queen won't sting you. Just be careful not to pinch her. Another option is to carefully remove the screen and place it so she can crawl off the edge into the hive. I like the variety of colors you have for the hive.

    Josh,
    Good job with the queen bee. I remember some of my super is weighing full of honey 30 4050 pounds. Nothing like sticking your finger in that fresh honey and stick it under your net .Yum Yum Yum. I prefer unfiltered fresh honey only way you can get the anti-biotics and the propolis. I also enjoy chewing on the propolis has a cinnamon taste do you agree?

    Awsome first time seeing a gueen bee , ive always been interested in honey bees, I think if you build a small building like a 8×12 5 feet high on sled runners for your goats you can move it with the kubota tractor when you move the goat pin. also add guttering on the shed with water troughs ( poly drum cut in half) may save time hauling some water .hope this helps good luck and thanks again love you videos

    Josh, I always keep one of those hairclip style of queen catcher in my bee suit pocket. Then if i run across the queen in any of my inspections I can easily confine her while I continue my work and know that I'm not going to hurt her. When I'm putting everything back together I will release her where I found her so that she can continue her work. In your case you could have easily caught her and released her into the hive. Don't bother with the plastic ones. They break too easily. I got one from Mann Lake Beekeeping Supply for I think about $12.00.

    We are losing our bees to the Yellow legged Asian hornet. Its not a native insect so has no natural enemies. Apparently it entered Europe through France and has spread from there all across europe down to portugal in 7 years. We are trying to control them using bottle traps, electric harp traps and anything else we can invent. I'm down from 18 hives to only 2, hope they make it through the winter.

    My disclaimer - I'm not a beekeeper, never have been but hope to be soon. One thing that makes me cringe every time you remove a center frame - you remove a CENTER frame first - just pull it straight out, without making any extra space beyond the existing 'bee space'. Professional keepers that I've studied in preparation for my future endeavors, alway push the frames together in one direction, away from one side to make more space to remove an end frame. They remove an end frame first because it is less likely to have the queen on it and there is less chance of 'rolling' the queen, damaging or killing her. With that one frame out, you then have lots of space to work with, to slide frames apart and then safety remove the center frames to look for the queen and/or her results. And just creating that space to get a frame out - you don't roll any bees. They may be a little more 'testy' than they would naturally be because you are likely rolling bees every time you pull that first frame out. The Canadian beekeeper, 628 Dirt Rooster, Jeff H(can't remember his name but Dirt Rooster will connect you to him) the Monk, Barnyard Bees, Fred Dunn, Skinny Bee Man - there are so many great beekeepers offering a great education in keeping bees.

I’ve also seen on. Other bee sights that you layer rocks in like a bird bath so they get water from around the rocks. Just sharing some info from what I’ve been told and have read up on. Josh you have plenty of water on your farm, you should look into building a hydraulic ram pump. Wranglerstar has a good video on them. A good cheap solution to your water logistics.

    • @ArkansasPilgrim
      @ArkansasPilgrim Před 6 lety

      Tommy Gun - I'm not sure, but I don't think his water has the elevation needed to operate a ram pump. Even though it can lift water above the source level, it has to have a fall to provide the energy.

    • @MegaTomtom69
      @MegaTomtom69 Před 6 lety

      Arkansas Pilgrim thats true but really not much of a fall is needed to start the pump a runnin. Once its able to get started it should have enough energy to send the water to where its needed. We send water over 300 feet uphill at roughly a 60-65 foot height difference with ours at our hunting farm. It only sits 5 foot below the spring that feeds it.

    Do you have a unused trailer and some 55 gallon barrels or a 275gallon IBC tote you can load on it for water transport? Was thinking about your animal watering and though why transport water every day or every other day when you can load a weeks worth onto one trailer to pull out with the tractor then have a simple dc pump to keep the water topped off and a solar panel to keep the battery charged. Yes you might need to spend a little to get it setup but freeing up 30 minutes every day can be worth it as farming is a hobby and not the source of income right now.
    A IBC tote on a trailer also makes for a good brush fire rig when paired with a pump and ether hose or monitor.

    Still researching for when I get my own farm. Though I have a few questions
    1: I know it's hard to survive off just a farm alone. What do you do during the winter and hard seasons? I am learning to blacksmith and I'm good at woodworking. Anything else I should try?
    2) What are good animals to start off with? I'm thinking Goats and chickens, maybe quail. But that's research I wanted to ask a experienced farmer.
    3: Finally if I choose to do bees. Is it a good idea to plant certain types of flowers that bees like around the hives. Will that help produce more honey?
