đ§ Jon's Choice to become Aegon | Game of Thrones Episode 4 Analysis
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 8. 05. 2019
- In Game of Thrones season 8 episode 4, the Last of the Starks, Daenerys Targaryen begged Jon Snow to not tell anyone else that he is actually Aegon Targaryen and heir to the Iron Throne. Why Jon decided to tell Sansa and Arya about his true parentage is something that gets deep at the core of who Jon is, his life experiences, and in particular Ned Stark. In this video I explore the reasons and pressures that motivated Jon into becoming Aegon Targaryen.

Wow, Excellent!!! I think honor came into Jon's decision as far as telling Arya and Sansa to redeem Ned and return his complete honor. What a personal sacrifice Ned made and Jon's is willing to do the same whatever that may be.
He hasn't learned from Ned's mistakes. He should die soon. I doubt the writers are going to allow it because they've been sucking so much lately, but Jon's honor gets in the way of what is intelligent and if he's not going to learn the lesson Ned taught us he needs to pay the price already.
@@ss-nc2dy He DID the right thing. That's the least he could do for Ned!!! Besides it is right to be who you are!!! He has every right to declare it openly even.
@@divyababu8327 Ned did the right thing too... and lost his head for it. Ned thought he could be honorable AND get what he wanted. Rob did the right thing... and got murdered for it along with much of his family. He too thought he could do the honorable thing and marry for love AND still get what he wanted. Now Jon also thinks he can do the honorable thing in telling his sisters AND get what he wants anyway in keeping it a secret. He hasn't learned from his father's or brother's mistakes.
@@ss-nc2dy probably doing the right thing is more important to them than surviving with compromises!
@@ss-nc2dy Ned lied and dishonored himself and he lost his head for it. He thought he was doing the right thing. He'd probably died being honest, but things would have went much differently. Rob didn't do the right thing. He dishonored himself and his pledge to marry a Frey and he paid for it, dearly. Jon was doing the right thing when he told Arya and Sansa that he was Aegon, because the honorable thing would have been not to tell.
He should listen to his advice he gave theon last season at Dragonstone. He doesn't have to choose. He is both a Stark and a Targ.
Steve Singer He is the Furry Reptile. The White Dragon. The Fiery Doggo. The Scaled Pup.
Too bad both his Stark and Targ family members are forcing him to choose sides.
More of a Stark. He has zero loyalty to his Targaryen genes. If he did, he would have flown with Dany instead of betraying her to the Starks.
crystals386 exactly he has more stark in him
@@mr.walkdown7019 He's the song of Ice and Fire, the king of winter and blood of the dragon. He's both Stark and Targaryen, but at the same time more than the combination of those two parts. He'll probably be the one to unite the land permanently
All he's ever want was to know the truth of who he is. Now that he finally knows his identity there's no way he would give that up. It's always been important to him. It wouldn't matter who he turned out to be. He wanted an identity and knowing he is not a bastard and was well loved means everything to him. He knows that he was wanted. That makes a huge difference in someone's life.
Yes! Which is why I'm so pissed off that everyone - Sam, Dany, and Sansa - all made the reveal about *them* instead of what it means for Jon on a personal level.
@@jcompton8507 Yep. Glad you noticed that. I think we're supposed to see how selfish they were being too. And alot if people are missing that. Subtle actions amongst big moments are being missed by many
@@jcompton8507 Makes sense that they would though, Jons feelings on the matter aren't exactly communicated to others. He doesn't really talk to people about this stuff. I'm pretty sure Sansa and Arya were very supportive, we just didn't get to see it. Sansa was clearly very worried about Jon when she told Tyrion.
@@Midgert89 what's the worst reason for that? And who has run all the scenarios in their head? His student perhaps? czcams.com/video/KidSygx7qxE/video.html
Jon stop caring he was bastard since the advice Tyrion gave him. He only told his family, Jon doesn't really care about a biological father he never knew. He always wanted to be a Stark
Benjen knew. "You don't know what you would be giving up "
Nah
or being a father and having kids and sex is great lol. you dont know what your giving up
Of course he fucking knew.
Do you honestly think Benjen went to join the Nights Watch because he felt like it? He loved his sister, he knew about her and Rheagar, he knew wouldn't be able to keep the secret. He went to the Watch to protect Jon's life.
BLO e# Ned should have told Cat.
Thanks for another wonderful analysis.
Jon has chosen Truth over Love. When he told the truth of his identity to Sansa and Arya, he was ready to take any consequences following with it.
he choses war against Dany in not keeping this secret. telling Sansa is a joke, we're pretty sure Sansa sent word to Cersei so Dany got ambushed by Euron at Dragonstone
he just wanted truth. he list his life once...truth is not a sound for him...

Yes. People kept focussing on his dumb decision so much that I bought into it and completely disregarded his diplomatic talents and the willpower he can actually exert.

@Jason Strom I dont think she will sit on the throne, i've been saying it on reddit for a while, and Daenarys's fans got upset, she is mad and throne mad, and Jon will take the throne from her for the love of his people.
In the books Dany will face 3 treasons, one for blood (Mirri Maz durr sacrificing her unborn child to get revenge on Khal Drogo), one for gold (Jorah in the show for a pardon), and one for love (Jon for the love of his people, the seven kingdoms).
He has been noticing her going mad, and is throne obsessed ever since he met her, and it became clear when he told her that he is her nephew, she immediately thought of the throne.
@@MoryBiinM Jon could work as ''the great uniter'', maybe he'll form a round table of sorts, but honestly I don't think anyone will sit on that throne. Least of all Dany or Cersei because it wouldn't change anything in the realm to end the game.
I think Jon will kill Daenarys. I think when Daenarys beats Cersei then there will be a rift between Dany and Sansa. Jon will kill Dany to save Sansa
I just would love to see the look on Jaimeâs face when he realizes who Jon is. After he said those things about Ned to Catelyn, and realizes what Ned actually did, I hope he feels like an asshole
@Baby Thanos I'm honestly more interested in him finding out cus of Jon being rhaegars son. Rhaegars asked him to protect his children if I remember correctly. All the angst incoming.
Yes, but Ned did erroneously condemn Jaime when told about how the Mad King actually died and why. Ned's condemned Jaime when he should not have, which created a hatred in jaime, which was understandable.
@Baby Thanoswhat have you been watching lol... he isnt the same person anymore

Jon will always be my favorite character. His life is going end with so much pain. I want him to be happy.
Bloody hell that was deep stuff joe very tragic for jon in the end
He better be sitting on the iron throne when all this is over.
Yes! Finally, someone who noticed that Jon did this on purpose :) The line from book/season one, âDonât tell Sansa!â And the look Jon gave when Dany said, âSansa is no longer the girls you grew up with.â Had me convinced of this. Especially when combined with his decision to slowly ride with the army, allowing time for word to spread. So many assume Jon is naive, stupid, easy to manipulate, emotional, but heâs not. He went against love for the greater good, convinced Stannis to fight a proxy war for him (in the book), heâs fooled them all and I canât wait to see how this plays out.
I totally agree! Jon is playing a very deep game , suddenly, and is doing it in a way that, hopefully, causes the least amount of destruction. Many characters in this episode made peace or at least the decision to be who they truly were... Jon not the least of them.
Azarial R EXACTLY!!!! This man has been searching for who he is his entire life and people want him to deny himself? Hell, no! Jon knew what he was doing. He told Sansa knowing that she would talk. He wants the Throne. He may not want to admit it to himself.
I donât believe this...I just donât believe this! Why yâall gotta turn Jon into every other scheming plotting asshole on this show? NO! Thatâs not Jon! And I say that as feverently as Arya Stark says, âthatâs not meâ whenever someone comes at her with the lady bs...not everyone is obsessed with the stupid iron throne or the damn titles that go along with it. Thatâs not Jon...heâs realer than that. He was not being duplicitous. He asked HIS FAMILY to keep his secret, and he thought they would. Donât make it dirty!
Valary Morghulis no! No! No! NOOO! Thatâs not Jon. Heâs not like that!
Ambers Jams Enterprises scheming to get power and titles for the sake of power and glory isnât what heâs doing. Heâs letting the truth be known so the people can decide. There have been hints of Dany doing things he would find morally wrong, and Cersei is evil. His motives are pure, he can let word get out without him scheming for power in a selfish way, heâs trying to protect people by letting them know there is another option. But if he has no name or power he canât save people from whatâs coming, and doing what needs to be done for the good of the people is him. Sitting back and doing nothing while the realm burns, that isnât him.
And to add a bit...Dany didn't make Jon feel love again. She demanded for an entire season that he give her the northern crown. Now she's rejecting the very notion that he can really truly belong to the House of his biological father. I just don't see much growth of Jon's character since he's been with Dany. I see him having to give more and more and more just to get her to agree to do the right thing which is defend the realm to win the crown.
She's bent him to her will. Not exactly a healthy relationship.
David Bauer Yes. I donât think Jon loves Dany. Heâs terrified of her just like Verys and Tyrion. You could tell all he wanted to do was to get Dany away from Winterfell to protect it and his family by the way he reacted to Sansaâs suggestion that their armies stay and rest. He was definitely scared for Sansa at that moment. If they had stayed, Dany would definitely have executed Sansa and maybe Arya and Bran.
RheyaRu!z After tonightâs episode are you still laughing or do you now see that he was only terrified of what she might do.
Drew 5498 exactly
Wow, can't beleive you actually made season 8 sound good.
Im actually seeking videos like this out so i can actually enjoy the last few episodes. Trying to unblackpilled on it.
I've really enjoyed this season so far and believe that it is a really good season. Its just that because its the last season its under a microscope and any slight plot hole is exaggerated. As the show has differed from peoples expectations, they are quick to pile unfair hatred onto it and dismiss all the good parts. Not saying its perfect but its a hell of a lot better than people are making it out to be .
@@scarletthart1828 no, i have the same complaints with these season like i had for the past couple. I prefer a slower pace and more details. Alot of people didn't like the slow pacing of the hound and arya but i enjoyed it. So with the shorter seasons and them rushing, the pacing has gotten alot fast. And with the night king they ruined. Don't get me wrong i actually like the horror movie feel of battle the winterfell, but i was expecting aleast one fight scene with one the of the greatest warriors(night king).
@@jimmyp9105 I do agree that the night king fight should have been longer but i think that people have to realise that they can only do so much with the budget and time constraints. i think it would've been better for this season to have been 8 episodes long. I understand why people are a bit annoyed but its still very good and doesn't deserve like 1 star ratings. I think if you actually think about what goes into making a tv show there are constraints. i mean it doesnt have the budget of a full feature film. we have to remember that.
@@scarletthart1828 i agree, but a few tweeks here and there would have made the story better.

Very good character analysis of Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen. Appreciate your time and effort in making this video.
A nice breath of fresh air during a week filled with bullshit Starbucks videos! Awesome video, good work once again. Much appreciated. Mighty mighty Joe magsđȘ
Great video. Really nice breakdown. Also nice to see someone who still understands the show and sees the parallels of Ned keeping his secret. Also nice to see you show him feeling the power. As honest and humble as Jon is, he does have some ambitions. Even if he doesn't show it. I feel people miss that point.
They're also missing the point of Bran planting this in his head. Why was it so important for Bran to have Sam tell Jon right before the biggest battle of his life? A Bran who cares about nothing. He set the wheels in motion for a reason.
THANK YOU!! Iâm so happy someone finally pointed this out. Jon knew telling that secret was the end of the secret.
He will choose both. He is the song of ice and fire.
beautiful
i feel he will choose none of them
he will abandon the name Stark and the Name Targaryen
and he will become No one just Jon.
@@michaelkean5969 that's what I think. Targaryen house will be finished. Think he will still stay snow
George has directly said Daenerys is the song of ice and fire
Enfin, someone with intelligence. You seem to be one of the few people to see things as they are. How could Jon keep something that defines and redefines everything he ever thought about himself and his relationship to the Stark family a "secret? I understand why Daenerys begged Jon not to say anything. But her request showed who she really was just as much as Jon revealing the secret/allowing the secret to be revealed showed who he was. Neither person was wrong. They were true to themselves. The showrunners planted the seeds of doubt vis a vis Jon and Daenerys in the previous season. Daenerys is not a "Mad Queen". But Jon called her out by reminding her that she behaves ruthlessly as any other tyrant to preserve her claim to the throne, then she is no different: more of the same. Daenerys is a conqueror, not a ruler.
I like your title. Jon is making his choice. He may not actually want the throne, but he may very well believe he is better for kingship than she is. The writers of the show decided this season was about the gamesmanship of rulership not existential threats from supernatural forces and beings. The plot logistics, however hackneyed, serve only one purpose: playing out the fight to be The One. Jon keeps referring to Daenerys as "My Queen" all the while he acts in a way that will divest Daenerys of what she believes is her birthright. Jon is being disingenuous. He knows Sansa: both the child he knew growing up at Winterfell and the stern smart woman Sansa has become. Let's not be cute and pretend that Sansa isn't/wasn't going to do something with the information. Same thing with Tyrion. If he is so loyal to Daenerys, why tell the master spider of lies and intrigue (Varys) an explosive Hirsoshima-like game changing secret? This is not really about "bad writing." This is life. Human beings do this all the time when they are trying to attain and maintain power. Betrayal is just collateral damage. Or, maybe it is the lingua franca of pretenders to power. Tyrion is a weasel and a miserable viper. He is more dangerous than Varys. Sansa understood this.
Thank you for that reminder of Aemon's advice to Jon to "Kill the boy." Yup. Poor Daenerys. Poor Jon. They are unwitting pawns in the great game of thrones. There can be no happy ending for either of them.
Best comment I've read! Thank you for eloquently saying what I've been thinking!
Um the writing is bad...for one thing we have to have Joe Magic write out explanations to the Jon identity question, whereas D and D should have ensured that this was addressed somewhere in the script...but I have to disagree with you about Jon bring disingenuous. I donât think so. Jon tells the truth. He did not tell Danerys he would go along with her plan and IT WAS A LOT for her to ask of him. Hide your true identity that youâve been wondering about your whole f@cking life!?!?!?!? Who does that? Who would make such a request? Someone who has everything to lose, if she doesnât. You are right that they are both in an impossible situation. I want to say to Dany, âyou canât ask him to lie about who he is.â I mean she canât, itâs just not right. BUT, I also want to remind Jon...if you ârun tell datâ thereâs a good chance this will lead to her downfall...her who already sacrificed so much for you. I donât think Job wants to ruin her...but...he just canât lie about who he is! I mean I get that, because Iâm that kind of person. If I found out something that critical about myself, I would have to tell. Lying to family members about it...I just couldnât.
Dany isnt a pawn in the great game of thrones, she is a player. Jon is bumbling along trying to figure it all out as he strives to act with integrity and selflessly and mostly failing at it because of his conflicts of interest. Dany, unless she suddenly changes course is not, as she so often said is not to break the wheel, she is the wheel. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, Cersei must go because she is evil and corrupt, to break the wheel is to reject absolute power and entitlement but that's what Dany seeks to embrace, even when she knows that even by her standards she is not entitled. Breaking the wheel is to create a new order, not to juggle who is on top, or who sits the throne. Perhaps the broken throne in the snow foreshadows that, or perhaps Westeros is doomed to another 10,000 years of the game of thrones.
@@eminteyWell said Edwin. Get so tired of all the 'breaker of chains' bs. Dany is the wheel. Every time she talks of her birthright entitlements, that's the wheel she's talking about. Every time she list her many titles, that's the wheel she's referring to. She's the return of the foreign invader. The colonial, imperialistic invaders. That's what her family were. they weren't from that region. They were foreigners who invaded and subjugated the native population. Without the wheel Dany has no claim to the throne. The return of the Targs is the equivalent of the British returning to India. And now Dany knows that even by the messed up logic of the wheel that she's not entitled to the throne. She's just one more power obsessed tyrant in a long line of power obsessed tyrants.
@@cocokai9661 True...but first the First Men were once the invaders, too, and the COFT apparently created the White Walkers to chase them off. And it backfired. Then the Andals were the invaders, and the 1M and the COTF hated them for cutting down the Weirwoods and forcing the Faith of the 7 on everyone. And the separate kingdoms warred with each other on a regular basis. The Targs didn't *conquer* the minute they came over. They stayed somewhat peacefully on Dragonstone for several years (decades? longer? Not sure how much time from Daenys the Dreamer to Aegon I, but it was several generations...) Aegon I, who was born on Dragonstone, eventually got fed up with people like Harren the Black and forced the kingdoms to unite. (And it's suggested that he did it because of a prophecy, maybe about the return of the WW/Others)
This is a really compelling part of the story right now that I think is being overlooked because of all the people complaining about the show. Nice analysis.
So glad you made this video! I seems like the utter turmoil that the news of his true identity can, and probably has, inflicted on Jon hasnât been addressed as a truly terrible choice he now has to make. I donât see how he could possibly keep what he feels is his true self a secret. E5 may have more agonizing choices for many characters (and man o man, I canât wait!)
Great job. This is such a satisfying look at the deeper poetic forces at play. Gratitude for this !
Excellent analysis and breakdown of Maester Aemonâs advice! Thank you!
Jon didn't want to be bastard anymore. Whatever cost. He was humiliated for too long. Having no other ambitions for titles or power or anything else, he'd always had the ambition to be someone who matters, someone that he had always felt to be. And now, having that huge name and identity upon himself, there was no way he would've kept it secret in front of his two (unlike him, always loved and praised) "sisters". They should know that he also matters, that he's much more than just a bastard, even if that can spoil the whole upcoming battle. IMO this was his first weakness. Understandably so.

I just love Jon's character so much. It's been such a wonderful journey with him. I'm not sure how they're going to end this but after everything I really hope Jon makes it out alive, with or without sitting on the Iron Throne.
What a great and touching video! You said it all and then some. Now we get to see how it all plays out.
You make an astoundingly good point about *when* Bran had Sam tell Jon about his parentage and with what paired information. The timing now seems as clear as his handing over of the dagger to Arya. This is what Bran does. Now I am even more excited for the final episodes. Thanks a bunch!
Insightful, unbiased review! Thank you for this...I believe you have really pegged Jon's psychology & personality. Interesting side note: Dany begging Jon not to tell is understandable from her romantic interest, however, when she predicts that the people will demand that he take what is "hers" demonstrates her mental state. She totally missed the point: His identity means it ISN'T hers. I would love to see if the show runners allow her to come to this full realization.

well made and thoughtful analysis of Jon's character arc in season 8. Hats off to you sir
This has essentially contextualized the last few episodes for me in the best way. You are one of the most nuanced GoT youtubers and I thank you for your insight! Woot!
I don't think he's rejecting his stark heritage. He told Arya and Sansa especially because he loves them dearly. He wants to honor his word to Daenerys even though he clearly sees all her faults. That conversation they had after the feast was very telling. Jon will never accept being forced to reject who he is. Dany will tell Jon to cast it all aside and live as her glorified bedwarmer, while Sansa will tell him to embrace his true self, even if she obviously doesnt want Jon to leave her again.
I think this desire to protect Jon and keep him close feeds in to her descision to tell Tyrion about Jons parentage aswell. Sansa knows Dany will never accept Rhaegar's heir, and she's taking action to ensure she fails in her quest for the throne. As much as Sansa dislike the effect Dany has on jon, she has never before now actively worked to undermine Dany outside the North. It's a betrayal for love I think.
Bran saw the events before the long night and whose to say he hasn't seen kings landing and beyond and has set things in motion with the other stark children.

Yeah it's a great arc, I like how Maestar Aemon has been there since the start as a Targaryen mentor while on the Stark/North side Jeor Mormont took on the role as mentor as he began his upward ascent from being "the bastard of Winterfell". There's a line in AGoT where Jon and Arya are observing the training in the yard, Jon notes that "Joffrey honours the mothers house as much as the father" in terms of his coat of dual arms, and I reckon that is a hint at Jon/Aegon doing the same (dual Targaryen/Stark coat of arms)
This is so beautiful. It moved, and made me re think things. I truly enjoyed video and agree on all points.yet... I think it will take both stark and targ to be of any help to the seven kingdoms. Jon is both. He will have to find a way to make both parts of him work for his betterment and the realm. I believe he can and will. I just hope the costs won't be as great. Love this. Do more.
I do loooove the Intro, makes me want to listen closely to the story that follows
Joe I loved the video..... left me wanting more. Where have you been. I've watched you on live chats but this is the first video I've seen. Way to rock it!!
Great analysis... what Dany said after the feast made me think that she is going absolutely out of it... and now that she has lost another one of her children and Missandei as well... but maybe that is just what D and D want us to think. Also, let's not forget Jon was a helpless child when Ned had to keep his identity a secret, now he is a grown man, a survivor and a warrior.
WOW have I been missing out. There's so many GOT channels out there but I normally stick to my main 3...Secrets of the Citadel, Talking Thrones, and Grey Area. If it wasn't for that video you just made with Grey I may have never discovered your channel...but OMG I'm so glad I did. Content on here like nowhere else, such in depth videos no one else has done. Just amazing. Will be binge watching every video from now on. Outstanding dude! Disappointed it took me this long to discover this. Thanks Joe!

What a great breakdown, thank you.
This was an excellent video! Thank you!!
Wow this was an amazing video, a stellar analysis of the motivations, conscious or subconscious, of Jon Snow, as we near the end. Loved it and so glad I randomly found this video! Subscribed đȘđœđđœđ
You are correct. This is the most reasonable analysis I've heard. And I believe you are correct.
What a great video. I wasn't excepting a very deep insight about Jon. It had me thinking and wondering if it was the best choice. We wont know until the last episode.
Shame theon isnt around anymore, he could give hime the same peptalk as Jon said to him,
That woulda been beautiful
Such a beautiful piece!
Excellent points that I hadn't considered. Thanks Joe ; )
Brilliant interpretation! Insightful comments too
Great job Joe. I'm going through a lot of your videos I've missed đșđČâïžđ„đ
Excellent video. I really liked your analysis.
Excellent video!
Great video once again!!!
This is an awesome breakdown of Jon/Aegon's choice. Learned some things I had not considered. The like button has been slammed and you have a new subscriber mate! *Cheers*
Or it's just wishful thinking of the guy who made the video.
@@illyrusemperor9278 It is logical and critical thinking rooted in the source material, not personal bias or opinion.
Also have a problem with this embracing of R+L. Damn, ppl, Rhaegar was already married. He had kids! But he threw them over for Lyanna. And viewers conveniently wipe this immorality away for the romanticism.
Absolutely, not a good thing to do abandoning your family. I just wanted to use as a way to show that this idea Aemon told Jon is present throughout the books and for Jon everywhere he turns.
It was like John and Yoko all over again.
@@JoeMagician Unless it was the Manson family, of course.
I still think his wife not only knew what R was doing but was okay with it.
Kathy Fahey because Rhaegar's marriage to Elia was a political arranged marriage while his marriage to Lyanna was a love one. So who gives a f*** ?
Amazing video!
Great video!!
beautiful work
Fabulous commentary and insightful into Jon's character. I'd love to know your thoughts on Jon's future with the Starks with his new character transcendence. If he / they make it....
Great analysis! Thanks x
