এই মন্দিরে মূলত দেবীর যোনি পুজো করা হয়ে থাকে। দেবীর ঋতুচক্রের সময় দেবীর যোনি সাদা কাপড় দ্বারা ঢেকে দেওয়া হয়, অবিশাস্য ভাবে সেই সাদা কাপড়ের টুকরো লাল বর্ণ ধারণ করে।
মনে করা হয় যখন দেবী সীতার দেহকে টুকরো টুকরো করা হয় তখন দেবীর যোনি এসে পড়েছিল আসামের গোহাটিতে , যেখানে এই মন্দির বর্তমানে অবস্থিত।
