I've probably watched close to a hundred of these tornado vids, and I have to say. That was one of the weirdest multi-vortex tornados I've seen to date! That thing looked alive! Cool vid!!
There is a really ... absolute spectacular multi vortex video out there called : Multi-Vortex Madness!! (5/9/2016) I think it is the best multi vortex video ever recorded you should check that out.
An elderly man said the Phil Campbell tornado looked like a giant black octopus flying over the mountains As it destroyed everything in site! That had to have caused MUCH . URINATION!!
I remember this day...I was in my tractor cutting grass up here in Edmonton Alberta Canada and they were talking about all the tornado's that were happening down in Alabama on the radio. When I got home I turned on CNN and saw all the damage. So many people had died and all the damage they had caused....Left a huge lump in my throat.
I know Canada has had it rough with this blown out of proportion virus but I read comments all the time and I’m constantly amazed how soft hearted and kind Canadian people are
This was filmed from the National Guard Armory about two miles south of downtown Cullman, at the intersection of Mize Road and Cherokee Avenue. The view is towards the NW, N, and NE and shows the tornado as it moves through the downtown area.
Just as a side note...this was actually shot in the back area of the National Guard Maintenance facility, where I work, which is beside the National Guard Armory. The days after this saw this facility and the one next door become vital to the mobilization of Alabama National Guard troops to help with clean-up and roving security patrols for the Cullman area, This storm system did a lot of damage to downtown Cullman, and it will be months before the downtown area is restored.
I live in cullman. I have numerous photo's of the April 27th tornado's in cullman . i live right in the middle of simco, goldrige, berlin and fairview.
Good video, thanks. I'm 52 years old & from Cullman. I have a big family spread all over Vinemont, Fairview, Cullman & Guntersville. I live in Florida now, but plan on moving back up there in a few years. I remember very well, those tornadoes in the early 70's. I thought it was a little earlier than '73. One big tornado went right down mainstreet ( Highway 31 ) and tore the whole town up back then. And there were many all over N. Alabama that day & night.
Wow guys had no idea there were so many separate vortexes flying around up there at the start before it organized more. Ugly Hoover too with that second leg flying around it. What a scary day it's and amazing how a lot of the content providers sounds so cool they film this day
I think this thing started somewhere over around where I live on Ryan Road. I'm on vacation in Kentucky. We watched this cell on abc3340 on the net.. watched the skycam as it came down. called all my family. My sister was in downtown parking deck. Said she jumped in someones lap in the center of the deck when it crossed over them.
I hope yo mama n em was ok. (I love how that is spoken, sorry) It was a terrible day. I had loved ones in Tuscaloosa, and thankfully, they were ok, although they were struck, while hunkering down in a bathtub. I had online friends in Cullman, and they also were ok, but trapped on their country plot, till trees were cut out of the way. Thankfully, they were prepared, and were able to provide for themselves, until help arrived, which took a few days. It is always wise to prepare to fend for yourself, in the event of a natural, or even a man made disaster. I'd at least shoot for a week's worth, and try to keep it in a place that it wouldn't be destroyed, if something happened.
It's very interesting to see that the most violent tornadoes always seem to start out with tentacles reaching out from the cloud base. Same thing was witnessed during the 1974 Super Outbreak. Certainly something there to be studied. For instance, many classic tornado alley storms don't have this happen at all. It's usually a single cone that ends up condensing to form the funnel.
@pandabearunite right. just saying. that siren stopped. but the tornado was just beginning. so thats where im saying id lean toward the whole lotta damage part. im guessing the tornado hit the siren. or whatever it was attached to
Usually tornadoes like these form in areas where surface friction is low or almost non existent. Glad I live in Houston. Strongest we get is EF0s that toss branches and destroy fences.
Strong inflow and buoyant air-instability can overcome almost anything. And Houston is not much less dangerous for tornados than Alabama. You're misinformed
@ShoeGuy74 EXACTL:Y or if the storm knocked out the siren. ive seen this happen. battery operated radios or even teh crank up ones are life savers in situations liek this. i was in cullman 3 or 4 years back to pick up a motorcycle. i recognise alot fo this area. i need to find that address to see if he is ok
This was the Year that made the History Books & Were the Very Same Tornadoes that Hit My County in Tennessee that Destroyed Camp Creek Horse Creek, & Ducktown Communities Only they hit At Night and Didn't get to See them coming like you Guys Did.
@DoUWanna007 oh yeah, because a massive tornado outbreak and large tornadoes hitting populated areas more than usual this year means an active hurricane season.
@yamahonkawazuki Not true. People get the idea that because the siren stopped that the threat is gone, that is not true. Sirens stop for multiple reasons, including loss of power, and other reasons. It's not imperative for them to have it on the whole time, after they've had it on for a few minutes you should already be seeking shelter, in fact, you should be seeking shelter the minute a warning is issued. Don't rely on sirens, you'll regret it when you can't hear them.
Just because it stops doesn't mean it's gone, most sirens have to be operated, and if the person has to sit there to start it and stop it, how is he supposed to seek shelter? Obviously he'll have to turn it off. Once it stops, don't think it's over, just the other day there was a wall cloud right outside my town, why were there no sirens? Because no one called it in. A police officer radioed it in and the sirens went off, they later shut down, but a funnel continued above the city.
People, it's gonna get worse. The Hurricane season is here in the first place and with the active heat rising thru the states the likely hood of more tornados and hurricanes increases. Please remove yourself from the area, as soon as possible. These things can turn in your direction in a nano second, speeding your way. You can't outrun 'em. Just leave the area immediately!
@wynnbeez our house was hit by this tornado and the national weather service went around after it during cleanup telling every1 that they ended up rating an EF-5

@vandal9505 This was from the National Guard Base on HWY 69.

Not sure why Alabama sounds most of their sirens in attack mode, those Whelens sound great though.
