  • Whether you know it yet or not, one of the few problems with the new AS3 Pro hockey skates is pressure on the top of your foot, due to the new tongue attachment system. This video tells you how to fix the issue.

    Excellent tip...will have to try with the AS3s as well. I also saw the True video about adding some padding & tape in "hot spots" when baking them...great tip.

      Yep, I was surprised it worked, but it sure did. I'm not sure if you've tried on your AS3s before ordering them, but you might not even have the issue. I have a high instep and arch.

      I did not try them on first. I have not skated on the AS3s yet, but I did not feel the junction area of the replaceable tongue when baking them & waiting for them to cool on my feet. I hate the insole. I'll see if my Superfeet insoles work. I did order the lower profile tongue to see if that helps with increasing the volume.

      @@austinholthaus1525 Nice. You'll have to let me know how the lower profile tongue works out. I was also considering it. I know it only gives you a little more volume on the top of the foot, but maybe that's all it needs. I've actually seen a demo in person of all the tongues. They weren't ones you could snap in, as they were just demos, but the thin one looked and felt great. Definitely giving up protection on the top of the foot, but comfort is more important. Also, if you're looking for a better insole than the yellow superfeet carbon, there's a better hockey specific option for the exact same price. They're made by Currex. They were the insoles that CCM used before moving to the crappy Orthomove insoles. They sell them on Amazon and you can choose your arch hight to tweak the skate volume. Let me know how it works out!

    I thought I was the only one with that problem. I cut that piece of plastic off. Pinching the top of my foot too much. Removed the piece going through the toe cap too for more room. Put 2 rivets used for the holders to keep it in place.

      Nope, you're definitely not alone. So I think I've figured out why this is an issue on AS3 Pro skates with the removable tongues. The toe caps are LONGER than previous models. The other thing of note is the different toe cap design of CCM's three models of skate. The Ribcor is EASILY the best toe cap design of all skate on the market in my opinion. It's tall for the tops of your feet, but most importantly, it's SHORT. Keep an eye out for my new Ribcor skate video coming out in the next month or so. I'll definitely be touching on that topic. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

    I just used a sharp new razor blade and cut the sharp plastic piece out. Not a smart design but tongue still fits in there fine without it. Thanks for sharing

      That was totally my back-up plan, but it's a good thing I didn't do it. I ended up having to return them. Not enough volume.

    Do you have any recommendations for the AS3 Pro Goalie Skates? The tongue isn't the same. Can't wear them at all without significant pain.

    • @mongillohockey

      Oh man, sorry to hear that! My honest opinion is to sell or return the skates. The AS3 pro was a pretty tight fitting boot. If you happen to be experiencing pain on the top of your foot, it means you might have a higher than normal instep. It’s exasperated my the AS3 pro having an annoyingly long but low toe cap. You can monkey with it using a heat gun but at the end of the day, it’s the skate fit that’s the issue. The good news is that the new CCM fit system is great and the toe caps are fixed.

    I came here thinking the pain point here was the same I'm having, but no. After 5 months, I have noticed the tongue quality on the AS3 Pro is not durable. The tongue is weak and thinner than on previous generation of CCM skates. I have pain across the lower shin / upper ankle where the laces in the upper eyelts dig into the softer part of the tongue (just below the upper plastic covering of the tongue). When on skates, as you spend 90% of your time leaning forward, this is causing a very painful press. I feel CCM have done this on purpose in order for you to purchase more tongues - as if the skates weren't expensive enough! I never had this problem with my 2004 CCM 1052 Super Tacks, and the tongue on those is by far better, and still in better shape than the new ones. I'm seriously considering removing the tongue from my 1052's and stiching on an XS connector.

      Ya know, I don't think your problem is rare. I actually think most of us want a good ole fashioned felt tongue. BTW, the reason I liked the older style tongues of the CCM Supertacks (First one piece boot in 2016) is because it was hinged where it connects to the toe box. It hasn't been that way in a long time. The other thing that I believe you're experiencing is actually a boot that's too stiff. Check out my video on boot stiffness. After all was said and done, it was the Bauer Vapor Hyperlite that got it mostly right. I went from needing custom skates to retail. You might give them a look when it comes time for you to replace your skates. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    I wish the ee width skates came with the slim tongue. But you have to buy the slim tongue at 100 bucks if you can find the right size.

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  Před 2 lety

      I know, the price is ridiculous. That said, what you could really be asking for is a skate with more instep volume. The Ribcor 100K wins the prize there. Other than that is custom skates.

    • @alexiscalliou1444

      Purchased True Tf7. Odd sizing in that the regular width is wider than an ee width in either ccm or Bauer skates. If you have a high volume foot these are the skates for you. They also have a W width.

    Toe cap and new attachable tongue system is total failure for these skates. It presses on the top of the leg at forefoot area, changing tongues doesnt resolve this problem, it doesnt change volume at forefoot area.
    What worked for me is using heating gun heat up plastic in problem area and carefully bend it upwards. Only this worked for me. Also that small thinner plastic part need to be cut off.

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  Před rokem

      Totally agree. I did a video discussing exactly that to fix it. I’m sure you’ve noticed almost no pro players use the detachable tongue system. Most do a traditional 7mm thick felt tongue sewn into the toe cap. The good news is that it’s significantly better on all three ccm skate models now.

    Do you think the heat gun would be too much heat on that area? Just got mine in the mail today and I too am having this issue. Was going to get them baked tonight.

    • @mongillohockey
      @mongillohockey  Před 3 lety +1

      I think an actual heat gun could work if you're extremely careful with it. The bake will definitely help, but if you pre-heat it, the baking process might go smoother. One important thing I would definitely do. Take a look at how I use paper towel. I taped it to my foot and then put a hockey compression sock over it to hold it in place. If you use a heat gun to first soften up the tongue attachment point and then bake the skates with the 4mm thick paper towel taped to the tops of your feet in that spot, it SHOULD help your issue. Let me know how it goes. BTW, during the baking process for TRUE hockey skates, they use cellophane. It works pretty damn well on all models of CCM skates. I should know, I just tried it last night on my new pair of custom Ribcor 80Ks. Have your shop do it, if they're a TRUE skate dealer.

    • @gnarasaurus7178
      @gnarasaurus7178 Před 3 lety

      There’s zero TRUE dealers near me unfortunately. I planned on taking them to the pro shop at my arena. I might try baking them with the paper towel before trying to hand heat that area to see how it works. If that’s not enough I’ll use a heat gun and have them baked a second time after. Sucks that this is an issue, I was really excited to get these skates!

      @@gnarasaurus7178 I know, I was bummed about that, too. I've never had an issue with the toe caps of the SuperTacks before. CCM told me two things. The toe cap is on the AS3 is now LONGER from front to back than previous generations or their other models. This is digging into the top of the feet of people who have moderately high insteps. The second thing they said is that the have a completely different toe cap for their custom skate program and for pro hockey players. Now that I have a custom pair of their CCM skates...I get it now. The toe caps on the custom skates are NOTHING like the retail ones. Much nicer. I can see why pro players liked them. That said, I think your plan is sound and it is at least fixable.

      @@gnarasaurus7178 having this issue too. Has this problem subsided since you posted this or did it return? This is one of the only skates that fit my foot enough to keep from going custom and it would be a shame for me to return these because of a poorly designed tongue/toe cap. So frustrating.
