I've been curious for a while now as to just how strong climbing holds are. What weight can they support? In this video, I gather some data by taking a few sacrificial climbing holds to failure.
I have torn off parts of holds off the wall. It's absolutely possible. Those that stick out more can have really long lever arms. Also, the older style of resin is a lot more brittle. They were prone to cracking regularly. The newer ones bend slightly instead.
I've never personally seen that, but I do believe you - shape definitely makes a difference. Unfortunately I wasn't able to experiment with too many holds due to cost and making sure I could attach something to it. Maybe there will be a Part II someday 🙂
I'm almost 300 lbs and I have been unable to break any hold at my 3 year old gym. I have tried to break levered jug holds by jumping on them and I can't do it. I break a lot of stuff (chairs, beds, decks, mountain bikes, etc.) but never any climbing gear of any kind.
The safety factors are pretty impressive. I've certainly had no issues in my gym, even though I've been nervous about certain holds. Definitely not nervous now : ) Thanks for watching!
It's never the holds I've been worried about, its already the wall its mouted to that I sometimes hear creaking. Great video though!
I hear you - the walls I built are way sketchier than the holds lol 😂 Thanks for watching!
I've been putting on a few pounds lately but I think I'm still safe at the climbing wall, good to know
Very interesting results, thanks the video !

Same here - thanks for watching!

Blast! I wish I would have seen this before OT tonight. We could have talked about it. 🤣
Great experiment! 👍
Now we have something to talk about between missed putts this evening : )
Love this experiment! Great video, J.C.!
I had fun executing it! Thanks for watching!
