      If GWS had free entry... and played their game in the off-season when people are starved for footy... not only would they get a sell out but 5,000,000 people would watch it on TV in Australia. The crowds for this thing mean absolutely zero.

      They also started this game here after the Annual Carlton Family Day. So all these people were already there; so you could take your kids to meet the regular Carlton players , get photos autographs etc, during the day. It was a free event; and they said after we wrap up the Family Day there will be the first Women's match straight after; so I guess quite a few stayed back to watch it. After this inaugural match and with the matches being free; they might draw a couple of hundred if they're lucky?

    I'm sick and tired of the people taking pot shots at the AFLW. Honestly you'd think they'd have the decency to at least let the girls have a go. What is the harm of there being a women's league of the sport we love so much. It gives us footy to watch even earlier than usual. The crowds!! Look at them, they're on par with Rugby and Aleague crowds, so who cares if it's free. This competition just adds on to the strength of the dominant code in the country that we all enjoy. It allows people of both genders of pursuing their dreams of playing at an elite tier. So grow up why don't you, there's nothing more healthier for both genders leagues than having them both support each other.

      you think,if you constantly turn the ball over that would mean its going back and forth ,same if you were shanking kicks ,do you watch the ,E J WHITTEN games, similar styles of play ,not to many grey area free kicks ,scrums causing heaps of tackles and stopping the game every 2 seconds ,and now days most free kicks are unrewarded ,hawthorn laid 104 tackles in there final against the doggies last year with very little reward ,AND LOST,most other games theres a win just off that ,SO YES THE GIRLS GAME WAS FREE FLOWING AND NOT A GAME OF RUGBY.

Those trying to compare it with the mens have an inferiority complex...dont listen to them. When it becomes more acceptable for women to get rough and tough and start the sport at an earlier age instead of all the pressure to be all feminine and soft, then maybe we will see skill more inline with the mens. • @chrisvenables5767
    @chrisvenables5767 Před 7 lety +1

    Let's be completely rational, fair and realistic about the league. When the A-league first started, the quality was low but the potential was amazing. The girls aren't able to do this full time and as such the league will take longer to build up. So there are a lot of errors, some of the girls aren't going in as hard as others, umpires are giving a few soft free kicks and the kicking needs work on the down side. However errors will be coached out as the league grows, some of the girls are have superstar potential, kicking will be coached to be better and umpires will hopefully be corrected when they make bad calls. I say instead of judging the league on it's current form, see the potential of 5-10 years time and it will be amazing. As for the "it's a sell out.... but it's free entry" argument, the ticket sales will rise (so long as the afl isn't greedy), the quality will rise and fans of the men's team will appreciate the womens team as well. We are hungry for more afl through the year and this is a great answer, go girls!

    The quality isn't great. It will run a lot on hype and free entry in the short term. I hope it can grow over time provided people can lower their expectations and the AFL props it up long enough. I doubt it will ever be self sustaining on audiences and gate receipts but fantastic that it opens participation to women and makes it a sport for everyone.

      Pixielly oh yes of course, I have sisters, but my issue is, what if it's day 1 and 2 of a heavy flow. I know that this takes so much energy away. Would they be able to play such a physically demanding sport on day 1 and 2 of a heavy flow. It seems so unfair if they have to do this. And what happens if ones rags suddenly come on in the middle of a match while one is wearing those white shorts?

    I'm all for equality amongst the sexes but if this is the level of intensity we can expect from the women's league I really don't think this little passion project will turn out to be successful. It's the equivalent of men's netball. Just no.

    • @frankmat
      @frankmat Před 7 lety +3

      It's probably more accurate to say its the equivalent of any Under 15 boys match played on any ground in Australia. In fact I would be pretty confident in saying... they could grab any Under 15 boys team from anywhere.... and they would wipe the floor with these so called elite athlete females. A bit like the Australian Womens soccer team when they got smashed by that amateur side made up of 16 year olds a few years back.

      Money is already being taken from the Men's competition. Who is paying for the rent of the ground, the salary of the players, the salary of the nanny's that fly over with the players that have children (Yes the AFL actually pay for this.....), all the advertising money that has been spent on commercials and full page adverts trying to get people to turn up. It's the men. They sure aren't making money from the women when they are charging people $0 to come to the game.

    • @Max-bo4pn
      @Max-bo4pn Před 7 lety +1

      Only the first game, and u hv people yelling for the matches to be played at MCG. FFS...whats with all these hype? Give another week..and the female players will be asking for the same salaries as the men. Such is all the hype and self-entitlement. Sigh....

      These things are very normal in a new league look at the scores in round 1 1897 AFL (VFL) no one scored more then 50 points. Over time these girls will get better and better.

      Sorry but this is normal in a new league

    • @frankmat
      @frankmat Před 7 lety

      It's not normal at all. They've had to change the rules to accomodate for how scrappy female AFL is. They only hvae 16 players on the field instead of 18.... because they don't have the skills to play AFL and it meant the ball was on the ground all the time going nowhere. They had to put 2 less players on the field to try and open it up and stop congestion. Women's AFL will always be this way because they don't have the hand eye coordination and never will.

    • @frankmat
      @frankmat Před 7 lety +1

      Also... LOL at comparing it to 1897. In 1897 the rules were completely different. The grounds were bigger and games often called off because of too much rain. Not to mention there was actually no such thing as positions on the ground in 1897..... so you had 36 blokes in 1 spot fighting over a ball because there were no rules.

With the skills i say all football state bush a to z divisions should be televised every day and paid according. Id rather watch paint dry instead... Poor tv piss poor effort.

    A couple of years ago in the lead up to the Olympics the Australian women's soccer team was beaten 7-0 by a 15 year old boys club team. This standard of AFL would also struggle against 15 year old boys.
    It is good marketing though as it taps into tribal football fans.
    It also has an element of sensationalism about it watching women bash themselves.
