MY HERMES JOURNEY IS OVER & GIVING UP ON THE MINI KELLY.

  • I don't think I was ever really on an Hermes journey, I was not buying a lot from Hermes and visiting the boutique regularly, but I did have a wishlist with hermes and my heart set on the elusive Hermes mini kelly. Talking to my good friend Deb from @wildunfiltered and watching her recent video on her Hermes journey being over, did give me cause to reflect on this wish for a mini Kelly, and how I have now accepted my journey with hermes is over and giving up on the mini kelly.

Amelia, as a long time Hermes shopper and owner of a mini kelly, I can say hand on heart that it’s an overrated bag. It is insanely expensive, increasingly elusive and frustrating to pursue in store, and when you finally take it home, it fits one phone (and only certain phones) and one card holder. You have a really beautiful b25 which is a far more substantial bag, and will stand the test of time. I am grateful for my mk2, but someone needs to speak the truth about the value of this eye wateringly expensive SLG.

By the time most people get their hands on one, the mini-bag trend will be passé. I think that high priced mini bags are a bad investment. If anyone is going to buy a Kelly, IMO it should be at least a 28cm bag. That size will never go out of style, you can fit everything you need in it, and it looks good on any body type or height.

This video resonated with me so much. I had an amazing SA at the Washington, DC boutique who was also a friend. My biggest purchase was a Picotin 28 which I thought put me in a good position for future purchases. He left, and I quickly found out that wasn't true. They barely wanted to sell me a pair of Orans. Since that time I've visited boutiques around the world and have been met with the same coldness. Most recently in Athens, I was told the five items (non-quota) that I inquired about were not in stock. My response: "Is this a store or a museum?" It was insulting. Hats off to folks who have the money, time and energy to continue to engage in this game. I'm done.

That is terrible. I was once told they didn't have any bags in a local store. When the SA found out the manager told me they did all of sudden she had something she could offer me. That is when I decided that I was not doing that it is a handbag made of leather. While they are very nice they are not the only game in the world.

Hermès has become more of an "aspirational" brand, much more widely known, resold, and counterfeited. Every influence peddler on the planet seems to have a dozen candy colored Birkins and Kellys. It's unlikely that they're all the real thing. The only way the company can retain its allure and air of exclusivity is by tightly controlling availability. This gatekeeping appears to be left largely in the hands of their sales staff. This leads to wild inconsistencies among H boutiques. This is a hot mess of a mistake on the part of Hermès. Snobbishness and extortion is not the way for H to go. It is alienating both new and established customers. They would be better off going back to waiting lists, with every boutique worldwide having the same clearly defined, WRITTEN requirements for getting a bag.
Hermès would logically want to avoid introducing a lower priced line. That would start the slippery downhill slope that other luxury brands have taken. They are relying on twillies, fragrance, and their makeup line to satisfy the aspirational itch.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Chanel's lawsuit against What Goes Around Comes Around. If they are successful in hobbling that reseller's Chanel business, other luxury brands will no doubt follow suit. Eliminating the resale business would largely solve their problem with overexposure.

What put the nail in my Hermes coffin was Dayle getting a bag with NO buying history and that disturbing story on how Meredith was treated. Did you see the video? Very obvious this SA offered the bag by liking Dayle, which is understandable because she’s very likable, but that was only the final nail. I actually stopped liking the bags. I bought both a Kelly and Birkin on the resale market and a lindy in store and sold them all. Too many beautiful bags that the SA are sweet and cordial and want to sell the bags. I feel sorry for Hermes SA’s having to push items the customer doesn’t want. I’ve moved on

I think Maria Draganova waited almost 4 years for her first quota bag, and she lives in London, and goes to Paris several times a year. She's at all of the luxury boutiques on a regular basis, and owns a fairly large collection. Yet, I've seen others just starting out get a quota bag the first time they asked. I really think it's more of a cruel game of the SAs as to whether or not they'll deem one worthy, and not a corporate policy. Some people should not be given any kind of power, no matter how small. Control has become a power play more and more in societies lately, and this is one means that the little person behind the counter can be superior in their own minds. If everyone just stopped asking for them and bought second-hand, this problem would go away. Unfortunately, that's why the price skyrocketed double this year. 2 years ago, they were more affordable. Now, people are just fed up and not willing to play the game anymore.

Hermes is is an 'artisan' (craftsman) house. There is huge demand over supply possibilities, hence they want to offer their most illustrious bags to clients understanding H craftsmanship, brand and range of products. I personally never overspent at H to get a bag and I got offered more than 6 quota bags in the last 2/3 years. For the Mini Kelly, it is really a production issue as this bag skyrocketed after social media exposure. The way to get one, even for me as a long time H client, was to create a special order, which I did. Social media fell in love (very late) with Hermes and now everybody tries to say they are over Hermes... Consumerismm at its best! I am H lover, collector, for years and will continue to wear, enjoy my bags and other H items and will only shop whenever I really want something.

Not necessarily true for everyone though. I have been on my journey for 1 yr now. My spending ratio is currently 5:1 and still has not been offered a quota bag. Even though my SA has been giving me false promises and the runaround that there's no availability at the moment. My SA also implied that there's no way of knowing when quota bags will become available. I, too, love the brand and want to continue with my journey. But it is discouraging at times whether to continue or not because maybe some SA just want to string clients along to play you for earning more cash. But they aren't serious about thinking to offer you a bag.

Hermès thinks differently from other brands. They want loyal costumers who love their brand, not people who just want a Kelly or a Birkin.
So when they have clients that purchase their other products and show appreciation for the brand, they offer a quota bag.
So if you love the brand, you'll enjoy the process and the Kelly/ Birkin will be a plus.
But if all you want is a quota bag, you'll be frustrated. So if you just want the bag (not the brand), purchase one in the resale market, less stress and frustration.

I watch all the videos of those who will buy anything (& I mean ANYTHING) just to stay in favour. I had a very interesting conversation w/ a H SA in Dubai recently & he said… “we don’t just want to sell you a bag, we want to take all your money & we are no longer interested in long term relationships either”. You cannot chose buckles separately it makes zero sense. I have a Bally belt I bought in Paris years ago and it's the best quality I've ever seen. It outshines Hermès from what I can see. It's fully adjustable so it goes from waist to hip effortlessly. I wish they had the same simple style but no, Bally has gone weird. Hands up in despair again.

I have a silk problem, not a bag problem at Hermes but I get you. Fortunately I have zero interest in a C, B or K, so I don't have a horse in the race, but the lottery thing makes me crazy. I want what I want as I want it and I do not want to be pressured into taking something I don't want. I'm just lucky I prefer the houseares and shoes and Calvis.

I have a silk and cashmere Hermes problem too. And if you don’t buy the scarfs when you see them it’s sometimes impossible to stumble upon them on the resale market. And when you do you have to make sure they aren’t gross… if you actually wear them.

I think the Hermes journey only works if you actually value and enjoy their products. I agree to the vast majority (and many who have posted here) that if you don’t like the brand then the journey makes no sense whatsoever.
But Hermes took their policy of only offering quota bags to regular clients from other luxury brands such as Rolex, AP, patek and Porsche so it is unfair to criticise H in isolation.
I have bought many of my bags from resellers and also enjoyed the store ‘journey’ but it only works for me as I value their products and I use them daily.
As for the mini Kelly you are probably better off with your gorgeous collection of Chanel minis…they are much more versatile anyway 😊

Hi - thanks for this info! I have put my wish list in this year. I have absolutely no intention of spending loads of money or going on the “journey”! I only have a scarf which I purchased a few years ago. Buying a bag from store is a huge amount of money! I’ve been told that it’s not up to the individual SA to get the bags so I haven’t gone into store or called my SA as I didn’t want to annoy them. May never get the elusive Kelly bag but just going to see if it ever happens. If it doesn’t that’s fine but if it does - great!

Good for you for making the decision to set yourself “free” and saving yourself from frustration and disappointment. The mini Kelly is a very much sought after bag and the chances of that bag being offered through a wish list without at least a 2:1 pre-spend is 0. Why would they do that when there are clients who have been loyal customers, with close relationships with their SAs who also want that bag. Who would you choose to offer that bag to? Long time loyal customer or new customer who sometimes shops at your shop? You have a beautiful Birkin and other bags behind you. In the end they are just bags and not worth the mental and emotional stress just to get it. Happy New year🎉

The UK system has always been like a unicorn to those of us who don’t live there. The Wishlist is not something Australia has had in many years so spend is the only way to get a bag. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on a Constance 18 if you get one as they’ve never been in my list.

Ok I’ve watched it all. ❤The key thing you mention is the effort , BUT you put your hands up and say you are not really making a huge effort I probably wouldn’t for a MK either. The problem with the mini kelly is demand outweighs supply by 1000s of folds, so if for example only they get 10 into your store per year and they have 1000 wish requests how do they share it. Well in order will come into it but when all things are equal of course ie wait time then other factors have to come into play and for sure it isn’t just spending. EFFORT is the biggest thing most sitting at home moaning are missing.
I live 500 miles from my store it’s not even in my country it takes me about 7 hours each way!! BUT I make the effort to go as regularly as I can. I don’t spend any money whatsoever on things I don’t want but on things I do really want and for sure it’s not 10s of £1000 I spend.
A Hermes lover or loyal client isn’t the bag only chasers sadly. ( don’t mean you I mean in general)
In 2018/2019 even 2020 bags were so so easy to get, demand then is nothing like it is now so the bag buyers from they years can’t understand why they have to get in line and make the effort like the rest of the world.
So many say oh the store is so far yet huge % of clients have to fly into visit their stores etc. peoples idea of effort vary so much.
I have a list of everything I’ve bought over the years and I’ve done well so please please don’t be fooled that it’s all just about spending or SA favouritism , he had 3 different SAs all have been amazing BUT they also see the effort I make and that I love the brand not just the bags.
I can’t wait till demand slows as there is at times such a sense of entitlement circulating with the brand just now.
A good friend of mine has bought Hermes for well over 10 years , she collects scarfs and buys an odd lipstick wee things she likes , the store know she loves the brand and she can get a bag regular if she wishes. Nothing to do with spending. She goes to store monthly and knows her store and knows the brand well. 💁🏼‍♀️💁🏼‍♀️ that’s my 10p worth.
I’ve found the biggest moans come from the ones who make the least effort. Xx

      @ameliarosescloset  Před 7 měsíci

I think this is very true, and why this will never really work for me, because I don't love enough of the brand. I like some of the items, but not enough to say i love the brand and for me, I would be buying things to try and just find something to buy from the brand. I definitely don't love the brand overall enough to visit the store monthly, or to make the effort you are talking about. I fully accept I am not making that effort and therefore I don't think it is for me. I think for you it is very different, you love so much more about the brand, the shoes, your watch etc and it makes sense the bags are then made available to you x

    • @preidie
      @preidie Před 7 měsíci

@@ameliarosescloset see that’s where I think there is still a bit missed communications , do you know I don’t buy any shoes in store? None. Zero. I’ve got feet issues so I don’t buy shoes form my SA / or store , I buy them online or from other people . My gold Hermes ring I just got I bought preloved. My new gold Picotin I bought preloved , it’s brand new from a person I know . My blue nuit Evelyne is preloved. It’s not the ££ but the effort I think. To be really clear when I say effort I don’t mean effort in £££
I have a blanket like your one and guess what ? yip preloved. I didn’t buy it from store lol. So I love my stuff enough to buy it but smart enough to also buy not from store at substantially reduced rates. I paid £800 for my ring. It was. £1800 retail.
My watch was from store yes but the spend on that was nothing really considering I got 2 Kelly’s and a SO offer in the same year , one kelly and my SO offer was before I bought my watch also.
It is so hard to explain it on here but put your wish on again, maybe change the spec and wait it will come. Things are slowing a little. The best advice I can give is to visit and be patience. I only go to store 3-4 times a year but they know how far I have to travel and the commitment in time and money to do my visits.
I’ve never once in my life chased my SA to ask about my wish. I sit tight and wait.
People moan to SAs about 1-2 hour journeys and don’t realise that this in itself goes down like a lead balloon. I love my trips and you would be shocked how little my spending is BUT my love for the brand is clear. Hope this helps a little. Honestly most of it is common sense I think. I scratch my head at the things people say.
Let’s be honest so many have a few bags from store in the years it was way easier due to less demand yet they don’t like anything else from the brand so what should the brand look after them. 💁🏼‍♀️.
I saw someone moan about the wish system method being more specific ie size colour etc of course it has to be now. The demand is insane it’s to save time. That is proof that people were just taking any old offer too as long as offers were coming.
I know 6-8 people this year personally who all got their wish with next to no spend honestly. All different uk stores and all different SAs.
Oh one last thing. Your SA doesn’t allocate bags now it’s - allocation team. So that flattens the SA favouritism ideology. Allocation team match to client from wish and the manager approves. That’s the system.
Hope it helps. Sorry for long reply again.

It wasn’t like this crazy back then, I hv also stopped buying from them since pandemic which they skyrocket the spending ratio, I do love the quality and craftsmanship and the after sale service was excellent. I had a pair of shoes which I worn a few times unfortunately scratched my feet I brought it back to H the SA take it back without asking further questions and allow me to exchange for another pair. Now their sales strategy is really discouraging even for middle class income ppl, so I hv stopped buying from them when the spending quota is more than 1, it’s getting insane

I think we bag lovers get caught up in the hype; personally, I wish we as bag lovers would band together and stop buying Hermes and Chanel; the only way one can get fashion houses attention is to hit them in the pocket book; while on a rant (LOL!); I personally think the resale market is slowing, not just because of the economy, is in too many cases the bag price is above retail; I have found that to be the case with Hermes and Chanel...I am a Chanel lover.😊

My "hermes journey" works like this: I am very open to score another Kelly or Birkin but I will never get mad if it doesn't work out. I`ll ask for it whenever I have the opportunity. Like you I live hours away from an Hermes boutique and I do buy from time to time but in a random Hermes boutique I happen to be especially on vacation. So I am far away from building up a relationship with an SA. By doing it this way I was able to score a Birkin 35 and a Kelly 28 over the past 5 years. And I would be more than happy if I will be able to purchase a Birkin 25/30. But just like you I am absolutely not willing to pay 15 or 20 Thousand Euro for this bag. This will not happen, I would feel like a victim. So I stay open minded but other things are way more important (family, health, stability etc).

The SAs definitely play a huge role in this game. They are left to their own discretion whether to offer one or not. I think it's one of those old rules of being careful about giving power, no matter how slight, to anyone where power would go to their heads. Some people have extreme control issues, and giving them control over who does and does not "deserve" a bag, in their book, plays a huge part in this evil game. Not all of them enjoy the torture of others the way some do. You need to find an SA that is genuine and not playing the game. Firstly, by finding the right boutique without a manager that encourages it.

This would explain the mystery surrounding the "rules" of the game. There are no official rules. And if it's true that SAs don't get commissions on the most in demand bags, it makes sense for them to push customers to buy other items. I just don't get the Mini Kelly thing. Of course, Hermés was smart to create crazy demand for the mini bags. They get more money, and customers get WAY less leather! BTW, Hermès is back to showing 35 cm bags this season.

To me he has no interest at all that i can see from his onset gesture. The luck is just if i have time to even go in on and off. I am not staying that far is just about 8km from those malls but the attitude that i had encountered are not even near to tell me they are interested in me buying any stuff. It really gave me wonder is that how they are trained...not just one SA is like that, a few i had encountered have the same attitude. Is this my problem or theirs....i am not even near in asking any of my so-called Wish List. The way this company makes you 'chase & suck up to them', this is why so many people are going to the 'fakes', you don't have to jump through flaming hoops & honestly, most of the time, you're the only one who really knows if it's fake or real. I think I'll stick with my Coach bags.

I never jumped on the hermes bandwagon even though they have some gorgeous colors. Luckily, their bag styles aren't for me but also, I have a child to take care of. I refuse to play their games for a bag when shopping should be for fun!

$18,000.00 and up makes me so not a Hermes customer! My hubby would take me to divorcé court! He thinks I’m crazy for having my 2 real Coach bags with the rest being Coach outlet bags! I have saved up all my ‘rewards’ to buy my newest Coach tabby 26….. and while I love it I won’t be buying anything other than from the outlet!, especially the clothe bags, leather last much longer with me! I have an 8+ years leather tan bag that is holding up amazingly! I’ve gotten every cent worth that I paid!

I can’t get my mind around the impractical closures of the B and K, such that your pricey bag is constantly open and sloppy looking…. I know, I know, it’s suppose to look like that. Just don’t like it personally. I do like the Picotin and some less exposed vintage models.
I prefer a neater looking bag like my Channel medium flap, purchased before the crazy price hikes or the practical LV speedy bag, preferring the enpriente leather to the monogram.
Cheers to the end of the so called “journey”

I’m a big Hermès fan and I’m the first one to say, if you don’t like anything else then B or K don’t even bother especially in the US. To me the bags come naturally because I would shop Hermès no matter what. It’s like spending in any other boutique where I buy what I love. It just happens that I love many things at Hermès since they have such a wide range of products. I never felt mistreated or anything like that, I don’t call it a journey, it’s just shopping.😂

I’m happy to share my thoughts. I hate this “journey” everyone talks about. I’m not going on it. I don’t even really like Hermes bags. Grossly overpriced and the fact that so many people don’t ever seem to get what they want and have to settle. No thank you. I’ll stick with LV where I know I can buy what I love.

Hello- I can’t fathom spending thousands of dollars on a handbag! I also think it’s ridiculous that a designer house has to offer you a bag - that completely turns me off! I don’t even like the design of the Kelly and the Birkin and when these bags cost$10,000-30,000- please have they lost their minds! That’s a year salary for some people! I respect a person buying what they want but the Hermes process is really crazy! I’ll take a Coach bag any day!! I agree with you and I enjoyed your video!

Hi Amelia! I think you tube has played a part in all this 1:1 2:1 3:1 . I shop at a very competitive store and I’m telling you I’ve never had to shop like this. I almost feel like if the SA knows you believe this they capitalize on it and say sure why not buy buy buy. I go to store once a year and twice if I’m lucky. I’m just too far to visit regularly. I do keep in touch by text message, but as far as buying from all categories I don’t. I hope new clients don’t accept this way of shopping and just ask for the bag. Great video!

Understandable. I refuse to pay the mini Kelly resale price over here in the United States. The birkin resale price is more reasonable. I have a birkin 30 and my mom has 35. I desire a mini Kelly but I cannot fathom paying about $20,000 USD for such a tiny bag. That’s much beyond my limit and at that point it is no longer worth it to me. I’ll nag and nag my boutique about it until they hate me. I am no longer willing to do a ratio buy either. Either you want to give it to me or you don’t 😂!

What annoys me ab Hermès is if you are rich, you get alllll the birkins and Kelly's your heart desires. There's a British pawn lady i watch on shorts and one super rich woman came in to sell over 10 birkins and 10 kelly bags. All in super desirable, neutral colors. The ppl who save up and work hard, who actually would treasure their bags, who only want ONE, maybe two, are never offered one unless they jump through hoops like a crazy Hermès person. Yet they claim they want to offer these bags to people who truly love the brand and won't resell the bag. No, it's all about who kisses their SAs butt (i see women bring gifts to their SAs to get on their good side).
It's like oh PLEASE Hermès, let me give you my 10k, 20k, etc. So you may THINK about offering me a bag to BUY for 10k.
    Insanity.
Sad thing is, if it didn't have Hermès on it, majority of these uber rich folks wouldn't even think about buying that bag. Yet, you have ppl out here who want that Hermès bag for the quality of leather, craft, and brand history. Not because they want to flaunt they can afford it and was "chosen" to be good enough.

the "system" is stupid...if I'm going to pay $30K to the store to get offered to spend $10K on the bag I want I might as well just go the 2nd hand route and spend the $15 - $20K and get the one I want when I want it. Which is what I did. I love my bag and I'm glad I didn't bother with the game.

Why are we willing to spend two to three times the cost of a bag just for the opportunity to be treated badly in the hopes of being offered a bag? The Hermes game has become so over-the-top crazy and so are the lengths some people are willing to take. Maybe this is good fodder for a new game show!
