    Here's how I would start if I was you.
    1. Check compression, the engine you have is the 720 engine. 150 compression is perfect, 130 marginal and at 120 it is done. There should be no more than a 10psi difference between cylinders
    2. Replace ALL grey TEMPO fuel lines.
    They were not meant for today's ethanol and will produce a green goo that will clog the internal carb filters.
    2. Rebuild carburetors with ONLY genuine mikuni rebuild kits, be sure to order new needle and seats as well.
    3. Replace the oil filter and the small 3/32 oil injection lines from the oil pump to the engine. I would highly recommend keeping the oil injection system. Seadoos is the most reliable by far, many seadoo mechanics have never seen one fail and you will use much less oil. However if you are adamant on removing it be sure to keep the oil line running to the rotary valve, it needs oil or you will kill the engine.
    4. Misilanious things.

    Make sure you replace the fuel lines and rebuild the carbs (with genuine mikuni parts). The fuel lines from that era break down into green goo and plug the carb internal filters which will destroy your engine. I just rebuilt a 98 GSX Limited and trust me - those two things are ESSENTIAL. Also be sure to change the jet pump oil. Have fun, they’re great skis.

    Hey so first advice is remove spark plugs and put some Atf fluid into the cylinders to lube up the walls and piston. That jetski has been sitting for a very long time and the last thing you want is to mess up the cylinder walls.
    Second advice, do not spend any money on cosmetics until you know that the jetski runs.
    Get a new battery or jumper box to see if it turns over. But never ever disconnect the battery or any power source from the jetski while is is running. It can damage the electricals.
    When you actually get the jetski running make sure you hook up the flush kit and only run water when jetski is running and shut off the water before shutting off jetski. And do not run jetski outside of actual body of water because it can mess up seals and other things on the pump shaft.
    And one last thing, when you do finally get it out into the water to test and the jetski accelerates awesome but feels like it aint moving much than at that point your going to have to check your wear ring that goes in the jetpump.

      Great tips!! The water flush is totally backwards from an outboard on a boat. I almost messed my seadoo up thinking they were the same.
      For anyone curious, outboard boat engines need water to lubricate and cool the impeller on the drive shaft which pumps water through the motor, burns up if ran dry.

      @dingznthingz Před 8 měsíci

      @@hankhamadi3410Make sure the battery is fully charged and has the cranking capacity for your ski's engine. If that's all good to go, don't forget check all electrical connections. One thing I would definitely do, whether your ski cranks over fine or not, is to remove the starter and thoroughly disassemble it it for cleaning and relubing of the bronze bushings inside the starter. Unlike your vehicle, the starter on a jet ski engine is exposed to much more water. When the jet ski sets during off season, the starter will start to seize and require more amperage to turn over.

    Just found this in my suggested! I have a 95 seadoo jet boat. Definitely do a wear ring (it’s in the jet pump). 2 strokes should be easy to fire up just make sure you clean or rebuild the carbs, new fuel lines, do a wear ring, and check the impeller why you are in there. If the impeller has any chunks or bends replace that too. Other than that you should be all set. You can PM me anytime if you have questions. I have a little over 5 years experience working on this kind of stuff! Look forward to the next video!

    This should be a learning curve for you, I’ve had my first ski for 6 years (Yamaha go1200r), and it’s needed a few things over the years. Now it need another top end rebuild which I’ve never done, but they’re quite simple to work on (2 strokes).
    As you mentioned, you want to rebuild the carbs. Clean the fuel system and change the lines, if the fuel cock is stiff at all just changing. I’m not sure about these, but on yamahas it’s recommend switching to premix and getting rid of the oil system, as it’s more to go wrong. And again on the Yamahas, we usually get rid of the chokes and fit fuel squirters for cold start. Also worth checking clearances on the pump, between the prop and the wear ring. If it’s worn you can replace bearings and wear ring easily.

    My parents have the exact same ski. Infact I just got done working on it yesterday. The 717 motor is a 2 stroke so there's no oil to change. There's a tank that you fill with oil and it mixes on its own. The uper exhaust manifold bolts are notorious for backing out. Also there are basically freeze plugs on the exhaust manifold that are designed to crack if water freezes in the cooling veins. They eventually crack just because of the extreme heating and cooling cycles that happen when you operate the ski. Most people just tig weld them back together which is what we did. The fuel lines go bad every few years and it causes the motor to bawg down. It does that because the fuel lines actually colapse. If you run the ski while its still hooked to the trailer you can see it happen. Plugs need to be changed every year because they foul very easy. It's because they never reach temperatures obove 145 degrees and the plugs are really designed to be operated at 190 degrees. There's a wear ring in the jet that may need to be replaced. It's not terribly difficult for someone who is mechanically inclined. If the reverse doesnt work its probably just needs adjusted. Reverse doesn't actually engage a gear. Basically a cover pushes down over the jet and re-directs water toward the front on the ski so it moves backwards. Its operated by cables and rods. Its probably a missing or lose screw on the back of the ski near the jet. The motor is pretty reliable although not real strong. The ski will top out at around 45mph. If you got it for free you did good. If you decide it's too much get with me and I'd probably buy it from you

If motor is locked from setting take marvel oil and acetone and mix half and half and soak for a week and it will break it loose . Carb rebuild and gas line replacement for certain. Put a ton of fogging oil in the spark plug hole now and let it soak in for a while before you turn it over. On older engines so people put in auto transmission fluid to break up the rust that might be in side.

    Maybe pour about 3-4 oz Transmission fluid in ea cylinder and let it sit for a day or two. Save you a headache when turn motor over no need to break some ribgs, also think about doing away with the oil injection and mixing your oil and gas together. Better performance. Great find wish you all the best with the new toy. Drive it and gave fun be sure to grease the rear seal at the tail shaft and all the zerk fittings. Take your time start at one end and move your way down. Check and double check your work.

    You can paint the plastic covers with car paint. Control cables get seized when they are not lubed with cable lube not WD-40. Once you replacement buy a can and use it. It has a rubber cover and allows you to push the fluid all they way to the end. Steering is also some cable or linkage assembly which you can free up and keep lubed. Use marine grease when you can get it for this application as it will not sling off. Key to happy jet ski use is wash and flush after use then spray with WD-40 all the metal parts of the impeller and jet outflow. I bet if you spend less than 500 bucks you will have a really nice machine! Looking for the first start video.

    I have 2003 and 2006 gtx seadoos. They are a lot of fun! That motor in yours looks like a 2 stroke. I don't think that it would have crankcase oil nor oil filter. My GTX's both have the rotax 4tec engine. Enjoy!

    • @chriseaster5666
      @chriseaster5666 Před 4 lety +1

      Wrong on both accounts, it has an oil filter that goes on the hose from oil tank to crank case. The 2 stroke oil filter looks like a "lawn mower" gas filter but made specifically for 2 stroke oil.. from the oil tank it has three lines one going to the 2 stroke oil injector, and one going to crank case for the crank. Then it has another line coming out of the crank case "for circulation" back to the oil tank.

    You can get new seat covers from blacktip jet sports as well as new traction mats you’ll want to replace fuel lines if there grey they have a thing that makes them deteriorate on the inside and it will build up green goo in the fuel lines if your on Facebook there’s a group called seadoo two stroke owners and we all help each other out with mechanical help and where to get parts get OEM parts as much as possible aftermarket stuff seems to cause more problems and it’s not worth it in the long run great ski man!

    Extra Info : It was left out in the sun. So mainly have to reupholster the seat, replace all decals & mirrors, pressure wash & clean the white fiberglass footing area. Otherwise the engine is in mint condition with less than 200 hours on it.

    • @jonalirez6710
      @jonalirez6710 Před 4 lety

      @@sporehux8344 Its pretty much the engine, a drive shaft and an impeller. I looked into Electric motors that would have enough power and they were pricey compared to the ROTAX engine but still an awesome idea! (be interested to see if anyone does it) Exhaust is pushed out the back but adds nothing to propulsion. Some guys drill out a portion of the exhaust (think hollowed out cats on a car) but its more for a supposed performance gain and the sound. :-)

    Don't paint yet try wet sanding a small area of the gelcoat like you are color sanding paint min 400 and polish. If it won't polish up don't try to re-gelcoat it will be a lot of work and tricky. Prime and paint with marine coating like AwlGrip. Dupont Imron works well also.

    If you haven't herd of cataclean.& STP motor oil treatment& Marvel myserty oil you might want to check those products out. Along with some gum out octane booster to put in your ethanol free fuel. One more thing you half you use that cataclean in those jet skis in 3 ounces of fuel on 1/4 tank of fuel. Then fill it back then try it out again for A rip. Then let it cool back down then go riding it.

Personally the older barbardier models are just not that great but with some engine mods like a turbo and performance upgrades including the impeller. I've seen guys get these to be 75mph skis one thing I would say if you keep doing boats learn about gel coats. Also what two cycle engines are and how to make them last. Good job tho
