  • The Akeidah! The binding of Isaac.
Avraham takes Yitzchak to be sacrificed on Mt. Moriah.
    Find out what really happened.
Well, you must be excited! We are about to take an amazing adventure together through the Midrash.
The Midrash is ancient biblical commentary. It is a collection of several different works that expound on classical Rabbinic literature.
You're right....that doesn't sound so amazing, but check it out. It might surprise you.
I'm pulling from several different sources.
We will be dabbling in the Midrash Rabba,
the Midrash Tanchuma, and portions of the
Talmud, known as the Aggadah, which means the telling in Aramaic. It is the non legal narrative section of the Talmud, containing
"parables" and anecdotes to help illustrate certain ideas in Jewish ideology.
As I always say...to really get into the Midrash
    you need to believe....
    •Its absolutely literal
    •Its absolutely allegorical
    •Its both
    •Its neither
....all at the same time. Try wrapping your head around that...
    Resources I pull from,
The Midrash Says by Rabbi Moshe Weissman
The Book of Our Heritage by Rabbi Eliyahu Ki Tov
Rabbi Yosef Deutsch has an AMAZING collection of books on the Midrash written in story form.

“Torah has 70 faces for each of its 4 levels “.
I definitely agree to this statement more than any other agreement.
The richness and depth, insight and foresight , fairness and fullness , authenticity and simplicity of Torah are unparalleled.

Back for more! Finished #8 this morning! Hello, from NY! (You said in your last video that everyone in Israel knows at least one person in New York. True! And the reverse is true, too!)

The Midrash shares a beautiful glimpse into the process:
Said the Holy One, blessed be He, "If I call the place Yireh like Abraham did, the righteous Shem will complain. However, if I refer to it as Shalem, the righteous Abraham will complain. Rather, I will call it Yerushalayim, and that name will contain the way it was called by both of them: Yireh Shalem."💘💝💗💓💞💕

“Satan is the great Persecution Attorney”
He told Abraham “ HaShem will test you with more difficult things if you provide Itzchak” . Abraham did not care and went ahead to obey G-d.

“Abraham told the servant : stay here and we ( Abraham and Itzchak ) will go up together”. The servant does not have the spiritual insight they have. Holy things must be handled and managed by spiritual persons.

I have a couple of questions: I have been watching a ton of different Rabbis as well as you and you all say certain things that I am confused by and am hoping you can fill in the gap. The Midrash talks about Abraham keeping the Torah and Abraham calls G-d Hashem. Yet that name wasn’t used until the burning bush with Moses and the Torah did exist until Moses. Could you help to understand the contradiction?

Oh, wowzers. This is such a good question and above my pay grade. To be completely honest....I've never heard an explanation that left me fully satisfied.
In Bereshit 26:5 it's says," inasmuch as Abraham obeyed Me and kept My charge: My commandments, My laws, and My teachings.”
I heard it taught that the Patriarchs knew what the commandments were and fulfilled them by choice...before being specifically commanded.
That by being as close to HaShem as they were, they were more receptive/in tune to the will of HaShem.
The Torah (which means instruction in Hebrew) is Gd's will expressed in a form that is most understandable for us, wee humans.
I've heard it said that they kept it in behavior because they were so spiritually tuned it.
      What it means? No idea.
There is more out there on the topic. It starts getting pretty kabbalah-y for me, and I don't have a head for such things.
But there were things they studied because Shem, the son of Noach had a house of learning.
I also read some interesting stuff about the Sefer Yetzireh.
      A very good question, indeed.

@@batyaintzfat This is interesting. So the belief is that prior to slavery they were more in tune and connected to G-d. Almost like something written was unnecessary because they could download this information in seconds and because of that connection they could just know the heart and intention of what God communicated to them. What they say makes as it relates to trauma and even how we therapists do trauma informed care. Especially with my kid’s in the city who are dealing with high anxiety that keeps them wanting to go to school. My first step with them is to plan a daily schedule that they feel they can agree to. What it does is create a structure that the person is required to follow when their trauma brain is freaking out and it makes them feel safe and space to not have to listen to the perseverance going on in their head about whether they should or shouldn’t do that activity. They can always go back to the black and white schedule. The commitments in that schedule increased slowly, once the person feels they have mastered the commitments they currently have (ie for a portion: attending school 2 days a week to eventually attending 5 days week. I know that sounds silly, but for trauma anxiety babies-the idea of going to school 5 days a week from the beginning is like telling them you want them to fail. They won’t do it). So, then my next question would be did we ever get back to a place of the patriarchs? Where can I read to learn about this.

“Satan met Avraham in the form of an old man , questioning him ......”
What Satan said was very logic and made sense BUT not Devine .
A lesson for us not to follow human reasoning blind-folded.
