  • Bowser Jr's magic paintbrush from Super Mario Sunshine is an object that defies the laws of the Mushroom world. How does this brush work, and where exactly does it draw its power from? In this Mario theory, we take a closer look!

My theory and timeline idea. E. Gad made the magic brush as a means of bringing art to life. I purpose he also made Mario 64's paintings with it (Though he didn't know Mario at the time I like to think Peach bought them off him) In Luigi's Mansion 2, E. Gadd says he sells King Boo's Painting at a garage sale. What if he sold the paint brush as well? To Bowser Jr. Luigi's Mansion happens, E. Gad sells the King Boo painting and Brush, Bowser Jr gets the brush, Sunshine starts while Luigi's Mansion 2 is starting/happening. This is why Luigi and E.Gad are not in Sunshine. E. Gad is too busy with Luigi to clean up the mess from his brush, so he sends FLUDD over to aid, which Mario picks up, thus kicking off Sunshine.

Well, magic paintbrushes weren't uncommon in Nintendo games, specifically Kirby games. Kirby's Adventure has Paint Roller, who is able to make his paintings come to life, Ado from Dreamland 3 and Adeleine from Kirby 64 both can make creatures come to life and create objects from paint. Drawcia from Canvas Curse and Paintra from Triple Deluxe also have very similar paint powers.

Now, I obviously have nothing to put behind this, but what if it turns the water in to something else? Something that could get rid of the paint back to Subcon? Please make a video on this, I think it'd be interesting.

yes exactly my idea same with the ink on the water. Maybe it really needs to be sprayed or it needs some temperature. But then again going into water and coating yourself gets rid of the paint as well so no FLUDD needed. As seen in the lava mission where you won't have fludd. And the Manta boss comes out of the water.
I guess there is no real thought behind it. Sunshine itselfs seems very odd.

First off, I would like to say that this is one of my favorite channels on youtube (Along with Boundary Break and others). And secondly, you are a pretty awesome person in general (and not just for gaming reasons). As someone who loves looking into the lore, history, secrets, and etc of videogames myself; your theories and ideas on games greatly interests me. Therefore, since I also like to think very deeply about this kind of stuff, I would like to share with you a theory of my own...which also happens to be about the Magic Paintbrush, and its potential origins. But more-so about Bowser Jr, and his potential origins.
My own personal theory is that Bowser Jr himself was created by the Magic Paintbrush.
My explanations on this are pretty simple, although very lengthy. My first explanation about this is because of the Magic Paintbrush's ability to create actual creatures. And not just paint-like creatures, but extremely convincing creatures with their own sentience. And we see this property all throughout Super Mario Sunshine. We even see this with a new staple character in the form of Petey Piranha, who also originated from this game. At first glance, there's absolutely no telling that something was off about him. And it is only when you defeat him that he turns into a puddle of brown paint. This also applies for the King Boo look-alike, as well as the Pokeys and several other enemies within the game. Petey and Bowser Jr in particular are special, since they both originated from this game, and have reappeared in several games since.
My second explanation behind my theory is how, and why Bowser Jr came into contact with E. Gadd and his Magic Paintbrush in the first place. I really doubt that it was pure coincidence that he just stumbled upon E. Gadd and his lab, and E. Gadd just so happened to "give" him the Magic Paintbrush without a second thought. Prima Games states that Bowser Jr fooled E. Gadd using his magic bandanna to disguise himself as Mario to trick E. Gadd into giving him the paintbrush. I severely doubt this as well. Sure, you could fool a bunch of Piantas, but fooling quite possibly the most genius mind in all of the Mushroom Kingdom? Even if he is a bit scatterbrained? That seems like a huge stretch to me. Not to mention, the magic bandanna itself. It's actually different from the modern bandanna that Bowser Jr wears now. Instead of the white bandanna with a mouth-like design, Bowser Jr wears a blue bandanna to turn into Shadow Mario within Super Mario Sunshine. And on this blue bandana, we see a Mario-like nose and mustache that was drawn with...a white, paint-like substance. Huh, that's odd. Now why would someone who already has access to magic paint and its capabilities want to steal something that also involves magic paint? Did he somehow come in contact with a small portion of it, and wanted to target E. Gadd in order to obtain the source of said Magic Paint? Seems plausible, but I doubt this as well. Because, not only would he have had to figure out how to use the magic paint without the paintbrush, but also according to Bowser Jr's own words, he doesn't actually know who E. Gadd is. "A strange old man in a white coat gave it to me...". What's the problem with this, you ask? If he doesn't actually know who E. Gadd is, it would be very unlikely for Bowser Jr to both find him and target him (stealing or not), as it would be extremely coincidental if that happened. Pure chance, dumb luck, and a little far-fetched. Possible? Certainly. But it doesn't sit well with me, because there are TOO many "coincidences" that happen within this game. Not to mention, E. Gadd is practically famous, as seen in Partners in Time, raising further questions about why Bowser Jr doesn't know who E. Gadd is (Although he could've became famous after the events of Super Mario Sunshine perhaps). Additionally, let's assume that Bowser Jr didn't have access to the bandanna prior to meeting E. Gadd. This in itself is pretty much 100% not plausible, because again, E. Gadd is one of the most genius minds in all of Mushroom Kingdom, and if he had any morals (which are admittedly questionable), he would have immediately recognized Bowser Jr's likeness to Bowser, who is one of the most feared figures on their entire planet. And although E. Gadd's morals are questionable, I really doubt that he is actually evil. So then why? How did Bowser Jr find out about E. Gadd? Why did E. Gadd earnestly give Bowser Jr the Magic Paintbrush? And, most importantly, why did all of these events take place as conveniently as they did? (Outside of the "magic of videogames" line of logic, because that is boring)
My third explanation behind this is that, while Bowser Jr might've not known who E. Gadd was, there was someone ELSE who did. That's right, Bowser. Since Super Mario Sunshine takes place right after the events of Luigi's Mansion, Bowser would have CLEARLY had to know who E. Gadd was famous or not. Because, in that game, Luigi was able to foil both King Boo and Bowser's plans by using E. Gadd's Poltergust 3000 in order to save Mario. Not only would this understandably make the both of them very angry, but it would have also made Bowser very curious about the scientist and his technological capabilities. Because it wasn't just Luigi that saved the day, but Luigi with E. Gadd's Poltergust that saved the day. And, since Bowser constantly looks down upon Luigi (as seen throughout multiple games where he doesn't even remember what his name is), he most likely attributed Luigi's win to the Poltergust 3000 and its creator; E. Gadd. Once Bowser found out about who E. Gadd was, things began to set into motion from that point on. He went to find and target E. Gadd, in order to force him to create an invention for him to help him beat Mario. Something that could help him create endless hordes of enemies that are completely loyal to his will, something that could help him travel throughout the Mushroom Kingdom quickly and effectively (portals), and something that could let him "Make all of his wishes come true!". Sounds familiar? Yup, the Magic Paintbrush. The Magic Paintbrush seems absolutely tailor-made to Bowser's own desires. And something that Bowser forced E. Gadd to make for him. It makes perfect sense. Not to mention, E. Gadd already had inspiration for such a similar idea, as explained in this video about Vincent Van Gore. But, there are still some questions left unanswered. If Bowser knew who E. Gadd was, why didn't he tell his son about who he was? Sure, this could be contributed to how Bowser might only remember particular names like "Peach" and "Mario", since they are constantly on his mind (with rare exceptions like "Kamek"). But this is still weird, because outside of Peach, Bowser is shown to be very open, honest, and talkative to his son. Why leave such an important detail out? Unless...he didn't tell him, because he COULDN'T tell him.

    • @kamakazikid7
      @kamakazikid7 Před 7 lety +16

And now, for my final explanation to conclude this theory.
Explanation #5: Bowser Jr's words, the timing of everything, and wrapping it all up. When I look back at Bowser Jr's words in Super Mario Sunshine, they seem so...weird to me. Not just strange, but incredibly strange. "I won't let you take Mama Peach away!". "Yeah, Papa told me all about it." "He told me my Mama got kidnapped by a bad man named Mario...So I came here to rescue her!". "Papa told me everything. He said 'Mario's a bully, he never fights fair!'. He said, 'Jr., you gotta try to outsmart Mario.'" I have only one thought when I read all of this: Why do all of his thoughts and words seem so RECENT? First off, there is absolutely NO CONTEXT that would point towards Bowser Jr knowing about the multiple times that Mario saved Peach from Bowser. The way that Bowser Jr puts it, it is almost like he only knows about ONE instance of Peach being kidnapped. Other than the "He never fights fair!" bit, which could've been in regards to anything, and not necessarily Peach being "kidnapped" by Mario. Either way, you would think that Bowser Jr would've explicitly said something about Mario constantly kidnapping Peach, or something along those lines. Plus, why save Peach now, of all times? Why specifically at this one point in time, as opposed to doing so in the past? Was it because Bowser Jr was too young in the past? Well...considering how adamant he is about saving her, I doubt that. I mean, look at how strong Baby Bowser was in Yoshi's Island. Young or not, he should have been more than capable of at least attempting to do something. Speaking of which, Bowser Jr's own capabilities and high intelligence almost seems too...perfect. Almost like he was created from the ground-up to directly contest Mario. An elaborate plan to get Mario sent into prison? Being able to both match and sometimes exceed Mario's speed, powers, jumping, and acrobatics? These are things no mere child would have been able to do, even if he is Bowser's son. Oh yeah, and he's extremely talented with mechanics, machines, and robots too. Just like how E. Gadd is, although not quite on the same level as E. Gadd himself is within the field. Either way, everything matches up almost too perfectly for it to be true. Unless, you consider the following option: "I want to create a minion who is stronger, faster, and smarter than Mario! A minion who is completely loyal to me! A chip off of the old block, even!". If Bowser forced E. Gadd to create a device for him to "Make his wishes come true!", and also considering just how powerful the Magic Paintbrush is within Super Mario Sunshine, then this line of thought makes a lot of sense to me for Bowser to have. And after Bowser forced E. Gadd to create the Magic Paintbrush for him, likely in exchange for E. Gadd's freedom from Bowser (and/or to not have his lab destroyed by Bowser or something along those lines), he made his first wish. And with E. Gadd's intellect, the Magic Paintbrush, Bowser's wishes, and probably an extra dash of Koopa Magic (likely provided to him by Kamek): Bowser Jr was "born". And this isn't much of a stretch either, since Bowser himself could've also been created by magic, too (via Kamek).
After Bowser Jr was created, Bowser told him "everything". About how Mario "kidnapped" Peach, about how Peach was Bowser Jr's "Mama", and how Bowser Jr had to outsmart Mario in order to beat him. And, since Bowser Jr was created to do such a thing, he and his new dad began to work on their plans to "rescue" Peach from Mario, while they were on their vacation (to try to relax after the events of Luigi's Mansion). And they likely knew about the vacation, probably as another "favor" coaxed out of E. Gadd forcibly. This isn't too hard to imagine, since E. Gadd is most likely up-to-date with current events that happen within the Mushroom Kingdom, due to being famous-ish (or by using his technology). Otherwise, Kamek would have told them via clairvoyance, I guess. Regardless, Bowser surprisingly keeps his word, and lets E Gadd go. Likely because, when you are given a device that "makes wishes come true" (like the Star Rod), you no longer have much of a need for anything else. And once E. Gadd was released, he began to create (or modify) a device in order to counteract the effects and magic of the paintbrush that he was forced to create. And he planned this in ADVANCE, since it would make a lot of sense. Instead of just any old device that could create anything, he specifically CHOSE magic paint and a paintbrush. Why? Because there was an easy way to counter it: Water. Something that is everywhere, easy to obtain, and was of in extra abundance on Isle Delfino. And devices that use water are something that E. Gadd is very familiar with, such as the Hydrogush 4000...or at least, the Hydrogush 4000's origin. Time travel makes that whole bit weird, but in any case, FLUDD's words seem like he was mass produced anyways. "Thank you for purchasing this item from Gadd Science, Incorporated." Since he already mass produced this device, and it's location was already on Isle Delfino, it seemed like it would have been the perfect strategy for E. Gadd to deliberately create a wish making device with this specific weakness in mind, while craftily avoiding Bowser's possible suspicions about him. If E. Gadd truly is a genius, he would've easily been able to come up with this strategy to beat Bowser, by simply being three steps ahead of him.
Oh, and speaking of Isle Delfino, why else would Bowser and his son attack this place in particular? Bowser only really cares about Peach (and by extension Mario), since almost all of his attacks focused on the Mushroom Kingdom otherwise. Why here? Why now? Well, that's because he knew in advance that he would be here, as mentioned earlier. Bowser's "vacation" would've involved letting his new loyal minion and son, Bowser Jr, do all of the work for him. All the while he relaxes in his...hot tub in the sky (umm wut?), happy to watch all of the chaos happen down below, and confident that he would win via. Mario would be arrested, Peach would be his, Delfino would be under his fingers, and then he would move his conquest outwards. A fitting vacation for one such as Bowser, not surprisingly. And while Bowser is often seen as an idiot, I just think he is extremely overconfident. An example of this would be that he left the Magic Paintbrush in Bowser Jr's care. Not only would Bowser Jr need this to help him fight Mario and conquer Isle Delfino and capture Peach, he probably also fully didn't understand how the paint magic worked (On top of Bowser Jr being created with the Magic Paintbrush in mind). Plus, he probably earnestly got very attached with Bowser Jr, for obvious reasons. Thus, despite being usually super greedy about power and control, he was perfectly content with letting Bowser Jr keep the Magic Paintbrush. Not only because it helps Bowser Jr immensely, but also as a possible safeguard due to how Bowser Jr is a possible creation of the Magic Paintbrush himself. And we also see this selflessness with his son in obscure games like Fortune Street. He does genuinely care about Bowser Jr as a fatherly figure to him, but outside of fatherly love and the sheer power that the Magic Paintbrush has, this would explain why Bowser Jr is almost always seen with his trade paintbrush (even if Jr keeps it hidden). As a precaution to ensure that the paint's magic in Bowser Jr continues to stay as strong as ever. As to why Bowser Jr isn't hurt by water unlike most of the other paint creations (outside of his Shadow Mario form though that could be the bandanna taking damage instead of Bowser Jr), it is likely due to being enhanced by Koopa Magic (Kamek), and due to how he always has the Magic Paintbrush by his side.
Anyways, that is the end of my long-winded theory. True or not, hopefully someone found it interesting. Theories are just theories, and regardless of if they are true, they make for great and entertaining stories. And even if Bowser lost the fight at Isle Delfino, it was one of his greatest victories in a sense, as Bowser Jr continues to be one of his most valuable assets in the fight against Mario to this day. And even though E. Gadd helped with the events of Isle Delfino, Bowser's Army was still able to grow much, much stronger after said events. Not only would he still have an endless supply of baddies via the Magic Paintbrush, but Bowser Jr's high intelligence was able to greatly boost Bowser's mechanical might, as seen in the events of Mario Galaxy as a small example. From caking islands in magical paint, going to taking over entire galaxies and universes. That is one heck of a jump in accomplishments outside of just taking over the Mushroom Kingdom for the umpteenth time. All thanks to E. Gadd, Bowser Jr, and the Magic Paintbrush. When all is said and done, Bowser still "won", in a sense.

An alternate, and much simpler theory is that E. Gadd just REALLY loves money. Starbeans Cafe, mass producing FLUDD and using the events of Isle Delfino as a means of promoting his FLUDD product, the ultimate vacuum in existence, selling paintings of ghosts for profit? Yeah, E. Gadd is still pretty nuts himself. And if there is any character who's greed exceeds even Wario's, I think that E. Gadd would certainly give him a run for his money. Heck, in Mario Party Seven, E. Gadd made inventions that STEALS other people's money, and then gave it to Wario and Waluigi as their special item! He also made a wand for Dry Bones and Boo, too. E. Gadd might as well have dollar bills for eyeballs behind his glasses, as he loves his riches and controlling the market. Heck, he was even thinking about the "Long-overlooked market of after lifers!" during the Ghost Gown cutscene in M&L:SS! He probably also kept most of the gold and jewels that Luigi gave him at the end of Luigi's Mansion, I bet! Good? Evil? Nah. Money, money, money. That is all that this crazy coot cares about!

This is my theory, when u first receive fludd he sais, thank you for purchasing this item from Gadd Science Incorporated. In Luigi’s mansion Luigi uses the polterguss 3000 and we can see that Gadd uses it to capture ghost. In Luigi’s mansion 2 Gadd sais that he sells the paintings of ghost at garage sales. This means that it could be possible that he tried to make a magic paintbrush to create paintings as a faster alternative to catching ghosts.but it turned out as a flaw and considering he can time travel why would he care who he sells the paintbrush to. He probably made fludd after realizing that he made a mistake considering water is the only thing that removes the paint. Or maybe his original intention was to use fludd and the brush at the same time and create things and travel but be able to erase any mistakes along the way with fludd.
This doesn’t mean that this is 100% true, it’s just a fun theory that kinda would make since.

The brush is capable of cloning and so maybe Gadd try to make a replica of bowser and made bowser jr. this would explain why when bowser jr makes all these enemies in mario sunshine that they are all weird enemies and are mostly unique to just mario sunshine. Perhaps bowser jr tried to make goombas and since the brush doesn’t clone perfectly it created strolling stews. Think about it, every enemy is a little bit different, bullet bills, the boos (ghosts) etc.

I never realized the real threat that Bowser posed in Sunshine until I realized this. Those Shine Sprites are a source of sunlight. When Bowser's forces attacked Isle Delfino and started messing the place up with all that sludge it caused the Shine Sprites to scatter all over the region. Without the Shines to power the Grand Shine it's power is weakened and as such the Isle begins to fall into darkness. It is likely the dark veil in the plaza may have spread to other regions if the Shines weren't recovered. This is bad because plants cannot thrive without the sun. The loving palm tree like people that live across Delfino would shrivel up and die because there is no sun which they need to feed off of due to being plants. But what about the Nokis? They don't need sun so maybe they would live. Nope. They need water. That's why Nokis are always found near large bodies of it. So what does Bowser Jr. do? He pollutes the water. The very water that Nokis thrive in. Without water the Nokis would dry up due to them being fish that need to occasionally drench themselves in water to live. That's why the Noki capital beneath the bay is deserted. The pollution from Eely Mouth has made the city uninhabitable to the Noki and it's also probably why Mario needs to wear an oxygen helmet. Not only because it's underwater but also because of the high amounts of toxins beneath the bay from Eely Mouth. Other bodies of water aren't safe either. Run off goop from Petey Piranha pollutes the water area around the windmill in Bianco Hills and Gooper Blooper pollutes the water in Rico Harbor. Other bodies of water are inhabited by man eating artificial Cheep Cheeps which like all the other enemies in this game were created with the brush. Bowser and Bowser Jr. are eco-terrorists in this game. Bowser being the one ordering his right hand Bowser Jr. to spread chaos across the island. Had Mario not been there Isle Delfino would be a dead wasteland with no inhabitants.

I’m a little late, but I think that Egad created the paint brush from the materials you mentioned, and then bowser stole it to paint over the normal paintings in super Mario 64, making them portals, then used them to trap Mario in the painting in Luigi’s mansion after he was defeated in super Mario 64, then, after thinking he had Mario trapped forever, gave it to the painter who kept it for his art, and created all the non-character ghosts in the mansion.

Obviously E. Gadd killed the portrait ghosts when they were alive. The mansion did not simply "appear". Why else would he just happen to have a lab where a mansion popped up. Well, after killing the portrait ghosts, he entered Mario and Luigi into a contest. He let Mario come in to be captured so Luigi would have a reason to defeat every ghost. After Luigi captured Van Gore, Gadd studied the painting. He found out that subcon was the source of power of the paint. This is shown when Van Gore paints SHY GUYS, an enemy the comes from subcon. He developed a magic paintbrush to give to Bowser jr. and SOLD FLUDD to Isle Delfino. He then sells the portrait ghosts to earn money for what Luigi did, after which he creates more chaotic inventions to sell. In addition, Gadd probably created all of the shy guys, snifits, and birdos that are Bowser's minions.

By the way, how exactly does the magic paint work in regards to spreading? It's possible for Mario to expand any puddle of goop by sliding out of it. While this is fine and all, it doesn't make sense because the original puddle should lose its density instead of magically creating more due to Mario's actions. You said that the goop doesn't really disappear into thin air, but the same could be said about the goop materializing, too.

My opinion about what happens when FLUDD sprays the paint with water is that the water and paint chemically react and render the paint inert, if the paint had a more goo like outer surface protecting the part that actually reacts then that would explain why the paint can be on top of the water in Rico Harbor and not be rendered inert. FLUDD’s pump is forcing the water through the protective outer layer to let the water react with the paint. Alternatively E Gadd might have made FLUDD after he realized what the paintbrush was being used for and installed a filter that when water is passed through leaves a compound in the water that counteracts the paint by causing the paint to go through a chemical reaction with the compound without causing harm to the ecosystem, a chemical reaction with a compound would explain why the paint can be on the water in multiple places without vanishing but the moment it is sprayed by FLUDD it disappears.

What if Egadd made the paintbrush and then he accidentally made the paintings in luigi's mansion, but then he knew he couldn't fix it alone so he purposely trapped Mario in order to help him fix everything but then he realized he was trapped and then created king boo as a scapegoat for his actions. Mario being trapped caused the bringing in Luigi. Egadd's support for luigi, was all because Egadd knew he would get away with it and he could use them as helpers for his scientific research at the same time. Think about that while watching to this video its like Egadd is the big plot device and is the pot stirrer basically, he even made the nozzles to again aid Mario but why else would he do it? As a guinea pig for scientific research because you know that old man ain't gonna risk his life shooting into the sky and going around at the speed of sound.

ME: you know what's wired in super Mario odyssey the super Mario sunshine connected island complex is gone?
But in the early maps of the places in earlier games, it was there on the maps sprawled about.
Even though the people appeared in space after the game?! Did the paint teleport them through reality into a there sunny new home?
By that logic super mario, galaxy is the direct mirror universe to the main Mario world, and the Paper Mario universe is only adjacent.
Does that mean there's a paper subspace?! Does that mean the dream machine has four spatial dimensions? So the dream machine holds together the two universes acting as a portal?! And the physical version of is contained inside the book appearing in super Mario & lugui paper jam!?
There are infinite universes does that mean the dream machine connects all universe? Ours to does that mean our dreams are interdimensional gateway and dreams are just the limits of perception as subspace seeps into your mind?!
KId yea that, I call it a dream! Know anything about it?
