Escape to Padre Island: A Weekend Retreat at Bali County Park

  • We interrupt our #BeyondTX videos to share our recent weekend trip to Padre Island on the Texas Gulf Coast. RV Camping options down on Padre range from free beach camping to full hookups for rigs of all sizes. We went down planning to try beach camping, but the high tide warnings changed our minds.
    In this video, we show you Malaquite Campground which offers dry camping with a view of the gulf inside Padre Island National Seashore. Then we move up the coast about 12 miles to Padre Bali County Park so we can plug the rig in and run the air conditioners at night (it was still pretty warm during our visit).
    We can't wait to go back down and spend a couple of weeks in the area when it cools down a bit! Watch for another Padre Island video in the future!
    Thank you to Marc from Grand Adventure for the drone lessons and drone video clips. If you haven't seen the Wingin' It! we filmed with him, you can check it out here: • A Grand Adventure in T... . And be sure to check out his channel: / grandadventure .
    Mentioned in this Video:

    Marc's Drone: amzn.to/2IJ8Oaz
    By the way, if you're wondering about the material hanging from our awning, that is our Sunblocker ( amzn.to/2qagn3T ). It provides more shade under the awning by defusing the sun that comes from that angle (in this case, the afternoon sun). We normally have the bottom tied down so it doesn't blow around like it did here. It can make our awning area MUCH cooler on a hot day.

We'll have our own episode from this stop coming up in a couple of weeks, including our interview with RV Texas Y'all. After Tom & Stacie left a cold front did come through, and we moved to boondocking on North Beach within PINS. Seriously, that was a lifetime bucket list experience. It doesn't get much better than that!

    That pier got destroyed a couple of years ago by a hurricane I just stayed there last week, August 2022. They are in the process of taking it down, but they are supposed to build another one. It might take a while though. I have a small Winnebago Rialta motorhome, and I camped right on the beach. At night, you have the beach all to yourself. Mainly because hardly anybody camps overnight on the beach. It’s too windy. I was able to run my Honda generator all night long and have A/C. The nearest neighbor was a few hundred yards away. Most people that camp on the beach, either sleep in their car, or put up a tent. A pass to camp on the beach is $12, and it’s good for the whole year! You can camp for 3 days in a row, and then you have to move, and you can camp another 3 days in a row. I don’t recommend a big rig like yours to camp on the beach, because if you get stuck, it’s going to cost a fortune to get pulled out. I don’t recommend a popup either, it’s too windy. But if you have a tear drop, or a small trailer with a 4x4 truck, or a Rialta like mine, it is perfect for camping. Most people that camp on the beach stay in an SUV. If you try it in a tent, it better be a good one, or it will get blown away. I usually camp close to that pier, because there are restrooms and showers close to that pier, near where you stayed in your motorhome. Showers are for rinsing off only, no soap alowd. I put this information out there in case some of your viewers want to try camping on the beach. It’s cheap, but the wind is brutal, but the sunrise on the surf is worth it. You can buy the pass at any gas station on the island.

    Wow! What a difference a year makes. Just one year ago you had to move to a park with electric hook ups just to run you air conditioning. This year, only a couple hours up the coast with no power or water!! Ugh! Thankful for your review. I have only tent camped in that park, but have spent a lot more time catching really big fish on the Bob Hall pier. Blessings 🙏🏻

      Hi Rayetta! It depends a lot on what parts of Texas you want to visit (since it covers so many miles). As a general rule: late October thru December and then late February thru May are typically pretty awesome as far as weather goes.

    That is indeed the Cedar Creek Camper owned by New Hampshire couple James and Michelle Butler, the couple rented the RV space A-9 from Sept. 30 until Oct. 14 at the Padre Balli Park Office. Adam Curtis Williams, 33, and Amanda Noverr, 32 killed James and Michelle Butler within days of your stay at the RV Park. The couples remains were found on October 27th at Texas beach marker 263 on Padre Island National Seashore just south of Padre Bali Park

    Question? Can you roll up your sunblocker shad screen with your awning, or do you have to remove and reinstall it every move?

    • @rvamericayall
      @rvamericayall  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Kate, Great question. We leave ours installed and roll it up with the awning. It has not been a problem for us so far. We try to be careful, as we are rolling it up, to make sure that it doesn't get wrinkled or roll unevenly. Especially in wind. When it is really windy (like it was in Padre), we use a broom to help keep it hanging straight down as it rolls up.

    Padre Island is our first major stop after we finish the shakedown of our new Momentum 399th toy hauler. We're very interested in learning about your experiences camping right on the beach, as that's our intention.

    • @rvamericayall
      @rvamericayall  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Chuck! We love camping at the beach, but we've decided not to camp on the beach. A lot of folks love it, but we've seen folks get stuck in the sand. We've seen the tide come right up to (and sometimes under) RVs, and we know folks who've had to replace their slide motors because sand blew into them. So we'll take the view from a pad in a campground (like the Malaquite Campground inside South Padre Island National Seashore) and walk on the beach. Enjoy your new Momentum!

    • @chucknewman3445
      @chucknewman3445 Před 3 lety

      @@rvamericayall getting stuck in the sand or trapped by incoming tides are indeed concerning. I'm hoping to gather as much information from those that have actually done it before we take the leap. Unfortunately, our budget doesn't permit a lot of paid camping... around 25-30%. So, we're going to have to get creative... or I need to make more $$ in retirement 😢
      Please don't take that the wrong way. I wasn't intending for it to appear critical.

    • @rvamericayall
      @rvamericayall  Před 3 lety

      Don’t worry. We didn’t take it as critical at all. If you get National Parks Senior Pass, you’ll get 1/2 price camping in National Parks. Which would make it $7/ night in the Malaquite Campground in the Padre Island National Seashore. We paid $14 to stay there. We were right behind the dunes with an unobstructed view of the Gulf. Not sure if there are size restrictions. Here’s the campground website: www.nps.gov/pais/planyourvisit/malaquite_campground.htm

      You can’t run the generator during the night, Richard. The parks don’t allow it. This experience is one of the reasons we added solar and lithium to our RV: czcams.com/video/CFg-ZfNS4n8/video.html . With our new system we can run our ACs without running our generator.
