I used the Canon 50 mm F1.4 on a Canon EOS M3 (Mirrorless) camera and the results were amazing.
Great Video, I ended up selling my 50mm f1.2 just couldn’t consistently nail the focus, tried on My IDX, 5Dmk4 and IDs mk3 didn’t matter what camera, 70% the shots where fine, but found for no reason a lot of shots didn’t hit focus, tried continuous and one shot, didn’t matter, especially with back light shots was terrible! Weddings I couldn’t rely on it. Glad to see the back of it.
To get a sharp image with the 50. 1.4 you don't shoot wide open. The ideal aperture for the 1.4 is around 2.8 or 5.6. Bokeh is okay on it but if that's not what you're going for don't shoot wide open at 1.4. You'll notice image sharpness change when you change the aperture. Wide-open the slightest movement will throw the shot out of focus. So select single point shooting for autofocus. I had to learn this lens because it was my first introductory lens. My shoots were awful and not in focus. What helped was practice. Learn what you have before investing in more equipment.

I had both and honestly, the 1.4 was smaller and faster than the 1.2. You can't go wrong with either, but the price points are night and day. But if you get one used, you might find it for under $1000. It's always in my bag next to my 35mm.

I’m totally agree with you about the 1.4 is not consistent in the lmage quality. Because I have both Lenses.
You have had to shoot in the pouring rain during a wedding? wow. I write into my contracts that I will not take my gear out into inclement weather because I see no point in shooting a wedding for $XXXX and ruining $XXXX worth of gear. (also: Weather resistance is not weather proof - that would require a housing.) So, while I agree that weather resistant O-ring seals are nice - I, personally, would not sacrifice my gear for a shoot that would negate any income from that shoot. There's no reason to shoot in the rain without protective covering on the gear, which is easy to purchase and fit to the gear. I guess also, one has to consider: does a photo subject want to get rain-soaked?

It never even occurred to me that the issues I’ve been having with autofocus were because of my lens. I was worried it was the camera itself!

You could try taking photos in a very controlled environment to test this out (such as a cup of coffee in a bright lit area of your house) to better see if it is the lens or the camera. If you feel like it's the lens you could also try hiring a different lens to see how it works! :)
i've owned both and used them extensively. for some odd reason, i just can't seem to ultimately choose the 1.2 over the 1.4.
I think the 50mm 1.2 is only weather sealed with a filter attatched

If you're low at the budget 50/1.4 isn't worth to invest! Due to its outdated semi-USM AF system and very weak construction inside. 85/1.8 USM IS one of the best Canon's prime lens in term of value for the money. I keep this lens even after buying 85/1.2L II.
How do you focus so good trough the viewfinder? Often when I try to focus on a spot of a model it looks sharp in the view finder but blurry when I take the photo?
having the same issue ^^ i think we have to calibrate the lens/body/viewfinder with the diopter adjuster next to the viewfinder

First of all let's be clear, Canon EF 50/1,2 is an upgraded version from Canon EF 50/1,0, while Canon EF 50/1,4 is a model from mid 90's which Canon is reluctant to upgrade and why should he? It still sells damn well. And that weather sealing, well, that's nothing that a transparent plastic bag couldn't handle, especially in the situation like in your video where you don't switch lenses, at least not too often. Hope this was helpfull...

It's not just the weatherproofing Julia, it's the "L", which signifies it has "low dispersion glass elements", and is overall much sharper into the corners of the images.
I really love your commentaries, please keep them coming. I think your channel is the go to. I have the 6d mark ii and the 50mm 1.4 and I am debating between upgrading to the 1.2 or goi g for the 35 1.4 usm ii next.
I was on the same boat! Except I have the 6D, but I ended up going with the 1.2L. It's AMAZING quality when the focus is on point and the lighting is right!!! But I'm curious about how the 35mm performs

I got the 50mm 1.4 when I was on a crop body, and it made for an excellent portrait lens at like an 85mm equivalent. Looking back, I don't know if it was really worth the upgrade over the 1.8 because then I could have got the 24mm pancake too. Now, I'm fullframe, and see the 50mm 1.4 as a nice option when I need the extra stops of light, but otherwise think my go-to is the 70-200mm f/4. Investing a ton of money in a regular prime doesn't make a ton of sense to me - maybe it does for her style of fashion photography, but I'd probably rather have the 24-70 f/2.8 as a budding pro or even hobbyist as it gives you a really useful focal range, adequate light for most situations, and you can get that pro build quality at used prices.
I have the 24mm pancake lens but on a t3i. How is it on the full frame? Worth keeping?
@@Azhang22 I don't have it, but I imagine it would be really useful for its low profile and wide angle. Whereas now, it's a "normal" lens for you - on a full frame it will be wider. 24 is nice because it's wide enough for a lot of applications without being so wide that you introduce massive distortion. Stuff like landscape, architecture, and even street photography would be good at 24. Any sort of portraits, action, macro, etc. you'll want a longer lens. If you're wanting to stick with primes, the 50 1.8 might be a good cheap option for you right now and you can buy and sell it used when you're ready to upgrade to an L or equivalent lens.

Hi, thank you for this comparison video. There are a lot of options in the 50mm space when you get into the range of the 1.2 (US $1300) and weather sealing is certainly one of them, but way down on my list. The reason I feel compelled to comment here is there is a lot being made about the weather sealing of the 1.2 in the video and your not using the most obvious first line of defense on either lens! I'm always stunned by the number of "Pro's" I see in CZcams videos not using lens shades. Having spent 45 years in the Film and Photography business, It would never occur to me to put a lens on the camera without a shade. Inside, outside, wherever, old school I know, but that's just me. Mostly it's about keeping as much stray light as possible off the front element, but they work really well at keeping rain drops off that front element as well. :)
I actually love capturing lens flare in my photos, so I never really use a lens hood unless I'm photographing something like a wedding ceremony where it's better to have clear photos rather than really artistic ones with flares, etc :)
The fogging is not because of the water that gets inside :). It is most likely to be condensation. If you bring the cold lens in a warm environment (to save it from the rain for example) it will get foggy for sure but the same thing will happen to the 50 1.2L. Another possible reason for the lower contrast in the current scene can be the better coatings of the L glass, it was a scene with back lighting from different directions so...
Another thing to have in mind - if your copy of the 50 1.4 is old enough it can be problematic with the focus. It is mainly made from plastic and the USM motor is not the best one due to the class of the current lens. It can show signs of wear after years of usage. So try out a new one with the same camera body and you will see is it the models fault or the current copy.
PS if there is an UV filter it can reduce the contrast too...
The fogging was definitely from the water this day! Both the lenses were outside for the same amount of time, getting them same amount of water dripping on them from the rain yet only the 1.4 was fogging up and the 1.2 was fine. Also, yes my 1.4 is very old - but I have always found issues with the focusing ever since I got it! From old age, the lens just looks a little more rugged and the focus ring feels a little weird, but it still works the same as when I first go it :) And they have same the quality UV filters on them to keep the comparison fair!

I totally agree with your comparison. That's exactly what I felt.
I don't know it's because of weather proof, but EF 50mm f1.2 has richer, deeper and smoother color & contrast.
It has really unique color & contrast, mood and expression regardless of the latest lenses.

Canon 50mm f1.8 STM the cheapest of Canon range, not that good but good enough for some purposes/situations, esp. stop down.
I am an amateur cannot justify the f1.2 cos it costs too much.
I have 1.8 and took some of my favourite pics with it. It's a great lens, but I plan to buy 1.2 in the future.

For a fashion shoot, I shoot on a canon M50 Mark2. Should I use a EF adapter with the crop or a speed booster whic holds it at 56mm? I also do runway and portrait.

I think you have said before that you shoot wide open so the 1.2 would be shot a 1.2. It is worth noting for the viewers that you can only really do this in dull lighting conditions as in this example where it is quite dark maybe late afternoon and in the rain. You can of course pop on an ND filter but I never see any mention of this.

Thank you! My boyfriend who filmed this and all my videos is a professional videographer and yep - he's using the Sony A7s mkii. From his experiences (because I don't really have much experience in video) he started out on a Canon 5dmkiii which he used and made work for a while before upgrading to the Sony without looking back! By comparing the 2 video files, I noticed that Sony has a lot more information in the files, it's almost like editing RAW images but with video, and the file size is a lot smaller than Canon too, so it's much more efficient. Hope that helps :)

If the 50mm is so important to you great to have 2 just in case your main sense needs repair etc. . Strange about the fogging in the 1:4. I would but is a jar with silica jail or eventually it will develop fungus growth inside.
I ended up putting the 1.4 in a box full of rice to get rid of any moisture it collected that day! But I don't really use that lens anymore :) Also it was just fogging up because as I mentioned the 1.4 is not weatherproof like the 1.2 is, so moisture can easily get inside the lens and cause it to fog up in rainy conditions such as these.

I have 50mm f1.4, I thought there is something wrong with it because I need to take a several shoots to get the clear image, it is really like you said. But I really do not like it, it is like the focus is not working well. Sometimes I am taking the shoot of rings in front of flowers but I can't get the clear image of rings, but the flowers are clear. It is really annoying. Thank you for this video.

Would love your thoughts on the 1.8 vs 1.4 or 1.8 vs 1.2 I've shot with all three, but I'm on the 50mm 1.8 II I've only been shooting a few months so I wasn't able to properly diagnos the 1.2 or 1.4 when I tested them out for a weekend.
I had been saving up for the 1.2 but with Jessica Kobeissi recent vlog about her loving the 1.4 it makes me not sure anymore. I've also done some research and I've read that the latest 1.8 is actually a faster focus and more durable than the 1.4, so many questions!
My main income is actually traveling & shooting dance events so Ive been shooting with the Cannon SL1 and the 50 mm 1.8 II because the total weight is less than an empty cup of coffee however the 1.2 having quick focus and great lowlight is the reason I'm saving up, but I just started shooting portraits this year and am quite loving the process and wondering if I need the 1.4 as a stepping stone or if it doesn't really matter.
Also curious, if I'm shooting say, 1.8, 2.0 or 2.8 how does the image differ with each piece of glass? Is the quality quite similar or is there a large difference.

I have similar observations about the AF of the f/1.4 lens: it is not always tack sharp which is pronounced in low light. The same, btw. as Canon's 85mm f/1.8.
And a question to Julia: how come that you don't use a hood? Especially as you have an UV filter on both the lenses. Thank you.
Yeah, the focus is a bit finicky on the 1.4's, even when I'm shooting with really good lighting! I use UV filters to protect my lenses, but a lens hood is normally used to stop lens flare in photos when shooting backlit. I personally love capturing lens flares so I prefer to shoot without the lens hoods! :)
I like lens flares too. However my experience is that sometimes, often, while shooting backlit subjects or in the general direction of the Sun without a hood, I get a hazed picture and not nice flares. Which is why I usually have a hood on while dispensing with the filter. Cuz glass is evil :) The less glass between the subject and the sensor, the better.

Hey I'm an amateur photographer, I photograph mainly as a hobby but I'm also an art student and I have classes with photography. I might wanna do this more professionally in the future and I have a question for you. I consider buying this Canon ef 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM lens and I consider this to be more universal lens, so I'm thinking is there sense to buy the 50mm f/1.4 one as well or maybe this would be better idea to buy this 50mm + some other one? Could you suggest me something in here?
Off subject here but what part of Sydney is that? I spent a year in Sydney and walked the beaches but I'm racking my brains to remember whereabouts the coastline had flat rocks and a swimming pool like that. Maroubra/Coogee area? Just up from Gordon's Bay? Dang memories are coming back remembering all of this 😁.

Thanks for posting this! The 50mm 1.4 is definitely not sharp though, it's one of Canon's softest. Their 1.8 STM is good, and so is the Sigma 50mm Art

1.4 is super sharp...
I’ve owned both the Canon 1.4 and Sigma Art. The Canon has issues wide open (softness, fringing/aberrations, etc.) Slow focusing too. It’s at its sharpest around 4.5 or 5.6. The Sigma Art is amazingly sharp wide open, fast focusing with nearly no fringing. Cost about twice as much though.
Do you actually shoot often wide open with 1.2? I find that if you don’t nail the focus something as simple as hitting someone’s nose will throw their eye off focus.
Really trying to decide whether to just get the 1.4 since there’s very little difference but huge cost difference or save for the 1.2 😞
My first and only lens was the 50mm f1.4 for a couple of years and it worked out so well for me! The main reason I upgraded to the 1.2 as I mentioned in this video is because of the weather sealing and the reliability of the lens since I started doing a lot of client work and weddings which you often have no choice but to shoot even if it's raining! If you're really undecided, maybe you could hire/borrow them both and try them out?

@@arthurlbn It's really hard to tell once you start printing the images ... and most of the difference can be made up in post.
I have a 50mm 1.8 which is nice but would love to test the 1.2.I have 3 l lenses and the quality is just so different to me from non l lenses.Great video again julia,maybe time to start saving some money for the 1.2.
Would it be enough to just have a 35mm and 50mm in my kit? For portraits, landscapes and everyday use? Zooms are nice but they’re not 1.4 etc.

The 50mm 1.8 is a great place to get started with a cheap but good portrait lens! I haven't tried it out myself yet, but I've seen heaps of photographers who use it and achieve great results :)

Julia, how sharp is your 50 1.2 in 1.2 and 1.4? I have 50 L and 50 1.8 stm, and 50L is less sharp than the 1.8 wide open. Do I have a bad copy? I see a lot of people complaining about the lack of sharpness of the 50L below f2 ....
You really should use your lens hood. It will keep some rain off the glass, especially if you are using screw in filters.

Hello Julia, fabulous video. I own all fast aperture L series lenses. As serious Pro, besides the higher quality photos of the 1.2, to me just weather sealing is reassuring. The 1.4 was fogging up and focus was inconsistent ! Yikes! That to me as a pro is scary especially if you are shooting for a high end Client.
Could you do a 35mm portrait and landscape photography video ? There are many people who still are confused and stuck on 50mm and 35mm.. If 35mm could produce almost the same of the portrait of that of 50mm, then people would go for 35mm.. i know u have a 35 vs 50 video, but a standalone 35mm for portrait and also landscape will be much appreciated. !!

I would love to make a video about that! My honest opinion though is that the 35mm can't replace a 50mm as it's a wide angle lens and does introduce distortion in your images at particular distances. However the pair are a match made in heaven! A 50mm on a full frame camera is similar to what the human eye sees as it's not wide angle or telephoto and doesn't distort. But again, this is definitely an interesting topic for a video!

The reason why a request for video on portrait and landscape photography is that, people love to travel, they love to click photos, but carrying different lenses for a leisure trip is such a pain. So IF, 35mm could bring out good Landscape and Portrait, then people can opt for that. I am not sure that 50mm could shoot a good landscape..

Ahh I get you! And yes I completely agree with your thought process - the only time I travel and carry multiple lenses is when I'm traveling for work. But if it's just a personal trip, then I mostly only take my 35mm with me out throughout the day as it can capture everything I need! I'm going to work on this one!

For a crop sensor cam what lens can be use to get the same results as the 50 mm with a full Frame? Would the 35m do? Or the 18 to 35?

Lens Cap Hack. Just get some bright Red Nail polish and paint it in the notch lens cap. This will make it so much easier to line up the cap to the lens! Why Canon didn't do it I do not know.

Where can I purchase the 35mm for my canon. I have a 60d. I also have a 55mm so would it make sense to buy the 35? I know this is an old video so you probably won’t see this but just thought I would try. Thanks
